About this apartment rental

Welcome to our charming 2-bedroom, 1-bath apartment in the heart of downtown New Bern. The iconic Spaight House, constructed ca. 1770, initially faced the Trent River before being reoriented to Metcalf St. between 1908 and 1913, and a large rear two-story addition also transformed it into a duplex . In the 1940S, the home was further divided into 7-8 dwellings. The last renovation, until the current times, was in the 1970s. Beginning in 2020, work began to update each unit to retain the historic allure, original detail, and charm of the Spaight House while adapting to the modern lifestyle. The property has a delightful mix of long-term tenants and short-term visitors. THE SPACE A generous 785 square feet, our apartment boasts a King Bed, 3 Twin beds, Private Balcony, and Prime Location! EXTERIOR Unwind on the historic front balcony as you take in the picturesque Tryon Palace Gardens view. A glimpse of the Trent River awaits to your left. Embrace the convenience of being steps away from everything downtown New Bern offers! LIVING ROOM Sink into the large sofa, wrap up in a cozy blanket, and stream your favorite shows on the rare occasion you aren't hanging out in downtown New Bern during your stay! Enjoy the beauty of the fireplace, but please don't light a fire! This one's just for looks! PRIMARY BEDROOM Escape to our inviting primary bedroom, where a luxurious king bed awaits dressed with European-style bedding. European-style comforters are designed to provide each sleeper with their own individual covering, eliminating midnight blanket tug-of-war and improving individual temperature regulation. The blackout shades, 55” TV, Roku, dimmable lamps, and plenty of outlets make this bedroom a total getaway. This cozy retreat is perfect for relaxation and entertainment. BATHROOM The newly renovated bathroom is complete with storage space and essential toiletries. Enjoy the soft Turkish cotton washcloths, hand, and large body towels, makeup washcloths, hypoallergenic body soap, paraben-free shampoo and conditioner, and quality toilet paper and tissues. Indulge in a comfortable and convenient stay with all the amenities you need. KITCHEN The fully-equipped kitchen offers all the necessary appliances and utensils for a seamless cooking experience, including a dishwasher. Savor your choice of drip coffee or French Press - a luxury you won't find in a hotel room! Industry-leading Kinetico K5 water filter connected to the fridge ensures top-quality drinking water and ice for you and less plastic for the environment. BEDROOM 2 Bedroom 2 houses a twin-sized bed, a twin-sized trundle bed, and a twin-sized fold-out chair/bed. Large windows flood the space with natural light when you want it and have blackout shades when you don’t. A desk, chair, charging station, and basic office supplies (scissors, note paper, pens) cater to remote working needs. YARD The backyard includes a large round table with 8 chairs and an umbrella that guests are welcome to use. The amenities may be shared with other guests and tenants in the building. PARKING Complimentary parking is available behind the building, and guests are also welcome to park on the street. The good... Location is really convenient to downtown What? Sharp kitchen knives, good pots, utensils, appliances Lots of space Nice permanent residents share the other apartments Easy street parking Hot shower water Bath soaps, towels, etc Comfortable beds The maybe could be better.. No dining table Toilet needs a jiggle to stop running Heater is loud and near main bedroom Outside back of house area could be cleaned up to use for outside dining Lighting is lacking in living room Third floor tenant gets up early and floor makes old house noises Not perfect, but overall good and worth the stay

This rental is upstairs beside another rental and there are three apartments downstairs. Signs are posted outside and inside the property stating that surveillance cameras are in use. If there is a need for cameras, does that mean that crimes have been committed? Our code to enter the house downstairs and our upstairs unit was shared by the housekeeper who actually let us in the unit and showed us how to use the electronic lock. This wasn’t a unique code like our phone number, it was a code known by the housekeeper. Also, there is a back entrance into the unit that leads to stairs going through the unlit attic downstairs to the backyard. I called the property manager and voiced my concerns with both. She told me it was a safe environment and that I had nothing to worry about. My sister arrived later and didn’t feel safe with the housekeeper knowing the door lock code as well. And the back entrance through the unlit attic scared her just like it did me. We did not feel safe staying there with multiple tenants living in the property and the housekeeper knowing the door code. I texted the property manager and voiced my concerns one again. She told me I would be safe and they had never had problems before. I told her we just did not feel safe and would not be staying the weekend there. I asked if we could get a partial refund and was told no. I told her that the safety issues were legitimate and major red flags. Again she refused.

Location Location Location! Walking distance to all downtown New Bern attractions, shopping, and restaurants. Nice balcony overlooking Tryon Palace grounds, and we were lucky enough to be entertained by the outdoor symphony concert at Tryon. Apartment was not luxury but very decent, very clean, and thoughtfully supplied with all necessary items. Would definitely stay there again.

It was perfect for a 2 night stay. The place is quirky as would be expected from a historic house turned into apartments but it had everything we needed, and the bed and couch were very comfortable. We enjoyed coffee on the balcony and petting the kitty that spends its day lounging on the building's front porch 😊

This beautiful historic home was exceptionally clean, beautifully decorated and had all the necessary amenities. There were many extra touches also, including Cuisinart pats and pans, large ceramic coffee mugs, conveniently placed charging cords and even a cute apron! And I loved the antique apothecary chest used to store the flatware. The host was very responsive. Overall fabulous experience!

I hate to complain because this was a clean and tastefully decorated apartment. However, when we arrived and drove to the back to park we immediately backed out and parked on the street. The backyard looked horrible and a guy was on the porch smoking pot. When we entered his the building it smelled oh strawberry incense. The smell was even upstairs and was strong enough to give me a headache and make me nauseous. Stepping inside I nearly fell because there is a step down right at the door. As I entered the living room I loss my balance again as there was a step up to that room. Would have been nice to know this before hand. It’s definitely a safety hazard. The master bedroom door couldn’t close because the bed was in the way. The worst part was when we went to bed. There is a smoke alarm over the bed that is also a motion detector and lights up when you move. Needless to say I did not get any sleep as it lite up at the slightest motion. I am very light sensitive and felt as though I was sleeping with a flashlight shining on me. Though we had paid for two nights we mutually agreed to go home. We love Newbern and go often but we will find another place to stay.
