This town and nearby areas grew even more famous following the release of the book “the Island” by Victoria Hislop in 2005 depicting life on the island of Spinalonga. The island is situated in the bay of Elounda, with the nearest village of Plaka overlooking the island with a great pebble beach with crystal clear waters, and restaurants. Agios Nikolaos is a lovely small city with a vibrant cafe and bar atmosphere day and night. Hersonisos, Ierapetra, Sitia , Malia ,are popular destinations with cosmopolitan life. At Vai you will find the largest palm forest in Europe. Inland close to Milatos find kritsa, Mochos, Lasithi plateau, that are traditional villages and worth visit them. Historic Knossos is an hour's drive near Heraklion. Heraklion is the capital of Crete and the fifth-largest city in Greece. For lovers of travel and excursions worth visit the other two major cities of Crete Rethymnon and Chania. You make a small trip ,about three hours, ride from Milatos and enjoy throughout northern or southern side an interesting route of the island.
