About this house rental

The property is the principal part of this Victorian country house. Inside, you will love the sense of occasion created by the many period features including specially commissioned stained glass windows and a sweeping staircase. After an exhilarating day on Dartmoor soak up the atmosphere of a house previously owned by William Le Queux and Sudan's first president after independence. Outside, the property is reached by a tree-lined private driveway, shared with a handful of neighbouring properties. The private grounds which extend to thirteen acres, include specimen trees, and are a nature lover's paradise. Regular visitors to the bird feeders include woodpeckers and nuthatches. Enjoy the spectacular sound of the dawn chorus, and go to sleep listening to owls in the wood. If you are lucky you might see a badger, fox or deer. You will love playing croquet on the sunny lawn, gin and tonic in hand, while you barbecue the catch of the day. Your dogs and children will love running around in the ten acres of bluebell wood, making dens, climbing trees, and then flopping by the fire. The many natural and man made attractions of this lovely part of Devon are on the doorstep if you can drag yourselves away. The property has been recently refurbished and sympathetically restored.

Spent a week here with friends and families. First impression as we entered the house was wow! Loads of space for us all, log burner lit in the evenings, the lawn and grounds were lovely with occasional call of peacocks. Just needed another week or so to further explore Devon.

We recently stayed here for a week with friends and our children. It was a lovely place to stay! We played games in the garden and explored the grounds on the sunny days and on wet days it was lovely to relax and enjoy the huge living room and fire. The kids loved how big the house was for playing all kinds of games, and my husband managed to spend time drawing in the dining room as he loved the desk by the window. It was also a really good base for all the places we visited. Thanks for letting us stay in such a lovely place, I don't think there was a thing that wasn't thought of to make it enjoyable . We had a great time!

Lovely property and perfect for a holiday with several generations of the family. Everything was provided (towels, linen, plenty of cooking pots, crockery etc). Amazing gardens and grounds in a very peaceful location. Everyone agreed that we should like to return for another stay in the future.

We were completely blown away by the size and period detail of this property. Nine of us (of various ages, big and small) enjoyed a week in this wonderful house. Brilliantly equipped for self-catering, with comfy beds and nice linen/towels, we couldn’t have asked for more. Communication with the owner was outstanding and the generous welcome hamper a very thoughtful touch. We loved waking to the birdsong, and hearing the peacocks at night. Truly special. We hope to return. Thank you.

We arrived at this lovely house and immediately felt at home. Nine of us in all, various ages. Heather had been in touch with us before we arrived and was also available by text during our stay. Heather sent a gift for the younger children and also left a hamper with some lovely produce and a bottle of champagne. We made use of the log fire in the sitting room the first day as it was raining. It was really easy to light. One son and his partner cooked for all of us, during our stay, and they found the Kitchen fully equipped for their needs. The BBQ also was put to good use. Buckfastleigh and Ashburton have very good shops selling fresh local produce. The garden is large and safe, plenty of room for playing Badminton, (not very well), but with enthusiasm. Bedrooms were large and we all slept well in the comfortable beds. There is an impressive library throughout the house. Everything from the Richard Feynman Lectures to the classics, travel books and books for the children. Out and about: We used the outdoor pools at Ashburton and Buckfastleigh, Horse Riding on Dartmoor for some of our party. Car rides to Paignton Zoo and Beach.Visit to Greenway, Totnes and much more. We would like to have spent more time in the house and gardens. Heather's personal touches shows how much she cares and wants you to enjoy her home. All in all a wonderful stay in a beautiful house.

From the moment we arrived we felt comfortable and at home. The house is so well equipped with lovely furnishings and exquisite stained glass windows and the whole ambience is warm and welcoming. Our border terrier loved the vast grounds, where peacocks roam freely and we enjoyed playing boules and croquet on the lawn. The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed barbecues with our friends. The local pub does excellent meals and the pubs in Buckfastleigh are a short drive away. We took the train from Buckfastleigh to Totnes and were lucky to see a huge otter in the River Dart by the station. We have already recommended this property to several friends and know that they will not be disappointed.
