Nestled in Hikkaduwa, this attractive house for $17 per night is a great option for your next vacation. 'Thilina' is a well-equipped and comfortable detached bungalow located 3 km from the scenic, palm-fringed beaches of Hikkaduwa, a busy tourist metropolis on the south coast. 'Thilina' is a peaceful retreat located in a tranquil glade about 30 yards from the main house where the Sri Lankan family who will be hosting your stay live. Cooked breakfast is available to order at a cost of Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR) 800 per person as is a home-cooked traditional rice and curry for dinner at LKR 1,900 per person. Unlimited Wi-fi provided. Transport from/to Colombo International Airport: The head of the Sri Lankan family, Udaya, who lives in the main house near to bungalow 'Thilina', operates a tour guide/transport/excursion service with his SUV vehicle and, should you wish, he can collect you from Colombo international airport (Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake) on your arrival and take you straight to Hikkaduwa. At the end of your stay, he can also return you to the airport. The distance from the airport to Hikkaduwa is about 130 kms and the journey can take up to 3 hours at peak traffic times, although the opening of the Southern Highway (the first highway in Sri Lanka) in November 2011 has reduced the time. A tropical hide away far from the tourist crowd
A tropical hide away far from the tourist crowd
this villa it is located in a secluded garden area where very nice birds are present to welcome your stay. The villa is well equipped and has a perfect airco. Bedding is okay and the WiFi makes communication and searching the Sri Lanka topics a piece of cake. You might also find the name of all the birds and mammals that you encounter near the villa. Uday and his lovely wife and her sister are a gift from heaven and treat you as a Sinhalese king and queen. Breakfast is very good and well provided. Everything in the direct neighborhood is reachable by local TukTuk and the price for it is a bargain and that is what you should do in advance. Sunday market a trip by train to Galle old Dutch fort or just a day at het beach is do-able by TukTuk start. You might want to visit the local attractions and ask Uday for advice, moon stone dicking, local lagune boat tour and turtle farm are nearby but a two or more day trip inland is also an option to consider. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country that is still in its more or less unspoiled state when you are off road in the local suburbs. One negate remark is that the bathroom sink tile work needs restoring to give it back it's fresh look het shower is in perfect condition and reliefs you after a hot Sri Lanka day . As for diner there are various restaurants to visit at Galle road (5 - 10 minute drive by TukTuk) and also a diner on your doorsteps with nice rice and curry can be arranged at the veranda of your villa (can be completely mosquito netted and that is a very nice solution against the little buggers) . On the veranda we spotted: Blue long billed honeyeater, BulBul, Black&White Wagtail, Black headed oriole, mongoose, blackbacked woodpeckers, pillihuduwa's ( kingfisher) and the greater Coucal) and that all in only a short week from 07:00 till 10:00. Even if you are not a bird lover you might become one here...Goto Yale National Park to complete your satisfaction....We had a wonderful stay for the 8th time but now for the first time not in a hotel and away from the tourist crowd in this hide away villa.

We loved our week at Thilina, but as we told Loku and Udaya, the house is very comfortable but the positive experience is more due to their attention and generosity. The bungalow is spotless and generally very well-equipped, but cooking facilities are limited (no proper cooktop or hot water in the kitchen). The only real issue we had with our stay was beyond anyone's control - there were multiple and lengthy district power outages and a subsequent lack of water pressure - a mild annoyance in the shower. We were very pleased we took advantage of Udaya's touring skills and Loku's obvious abilities in the kitchen - the suggestion that she can prepare a "rice and curry" vastly understates her culinary prowess - we marveled at the excellent meals she prepared for us and even suggested that she could offer cooking lessons. They are delightful hosts who epitomize the spirit of the Sri Lankan people - warm, giving and helpful. We also really appreciated the services of Koshala, the very attentive and friendly tuk tuk driver. We will certainly recommend Thilina to our friends and will fondly recall afternoons on the veranda listening to the birds and watching the squirrels chase each other through the trees. It truly is a peaceful, green retreat.

If you want to stay in the most peaceful and tranquil situation then this is perfect. Trees offer you protection from the heat and sun and very effective air conditioning is available on the veranda as well as inside. At night, mosquito nets surround the seating area. Whilst the bungalow isnt particularly light , good lighting is supplied. Whilst the accommodation is comfortable and the kitchen compact, cooking facilities are limited but there are many good restaurants a tuk tuk drive away. . No door on the bathroom may bother some. Udaya and Loku were the most wonderful attentive hosts. - Udaya, who met us at the airport helped us plan a 10 day trip around the island after a week at the bungalow and stayed with us until we flew home. He booked hotels, a safari and made all arrangements for us. We couldnt have managed without him. Kossala, the tuk tuk driver was an absolute dream, taking us where ever we wanted to go. He was even willing to take an unfamiliar route home after a day out, at my husband's request, even though we got lost which added at least an hour to his day. He was always smiling and happy to make suggestions as to where to visit and was always a phone call away if we needed picking up. The old Fort area in Galle was interesting, the Maritime Museum somewhat depleted after the Tsunami destroyed most of its exhibits but still worth a visit. as was Brief house and garden , home of Geoffrey Bowa, the architect and his brother. near Hikkaduwa. After leaving Thilina, Udaya took us for tea at the most wonderful former Tea Factory, once owned by the Hethersett family situated in the hills just outside Newara Elliya. Another must was the Ridi Vihara Temple, near Matale. Quiet and almost undiscovered by tourists. Yes, we would recommend staying at Thilina but feel that describing it as a boutique bungalow makes it sound more sophisticated than it is and as a result, some could have unrealistic expectations. We loved it!
