Artist’s tower: Immersed in nature yet close to town centre
About this house rental
Nestled in Spoleto, this attractive house for $180 per night is a great choice for your next break. This lovingly restored artist’s home is located in a ‘sacred grove’ on the hillside of Monteluco, which has a wooded nature preserve facing Spoleto. The property sits tranquilly amid olives groves and is within a stone’s throw of hiking paths that wind up through a forest renowned since ancient Roman times. La Torre dell'Artista includes: Living room with fireplace and spectacular views, renovated eat-in kitchen with working fireplace and windows opening out to the covered dining area for serving food outdoors. Downstairs, the principal bedroom with en-suite bath opens out onto a garden terrace with views out over Spoleto and the mountains beyond. Upstairs, the sleeping loft has a double bed with ensuite bath. There is a third bath with shower and separate laundry/utility room on the main floor beyond the kitchen. A shaded dining porch is outside the kitchen as well as a shaded car park and an extensive garden amidst the olive groves. The property has wifi throughout and a plunge pool/spa area that is located close to the house but very private, carved into the hillside within the original stone washhouse walls with a spectacular view out over the town of Spoleto and surrounding hills. The plunge pool is heatable and has jetted benches and there is a refreshing outdoor shower. Please note: the driveway is steep and the house is a tower on three levels so is unsuitable for guests with mobility issues. The tech team for this site has been unable to post some recent reviews so we list them here: 5/5 Eine einsame Idylle hoch über Spoleto Das Haus und die gesamte Anlage sind traumhaft schön. Jederzeit gerne wieder. 8/27/2022 at 1:34 PM 5/5 Heaven on earth What a magnificent place. Everything you want and need is available en extremely clean. We've stayed over here one week and it was a full week of pleasure. Very quite, complete and completely equiped. Also Spoleto is a quite special city. Sophie was very alert, friendly and helpfull. Normally we'll never return to a place we're we've stayed but in this case we've serious doubts. The way towards the house requires some driving skills. Our suggestion is to do the first part (from the road) backward (both to the house and from the house). This is quite simple and prevent some stress. To summarise: We recommend everybody to book this house except when we want to go. 8/8/2022 at 9:35 PM

The artists tower is an impressive place to stay. Everything was luxurious for us from the velvety plush towels to the luxurious body wash and crisp white bed linen. The kitchen is a delight to cook in and the living room is an amazing place to enjoy a good book.
It was lovely each day to come home to a well appointed home with a stunning view and a nice spa to finish off the day.
I would not hesitate to recommend to anybody looking at staying in Umbria. It was a great base to explore the region.
A little tip rent a smaller powerful car to cope with the steep driveway and when you enter and exit the driveway head up the road toward Monteluco first and then do a turnabout 1-2km up the road. It is much easier and safer .

This residence was the most spectacular I've rented in all of Europe. Spending 8 nights in Umbria was the highlight of our 3+ week trip. Day trips to waterfalls and hillside towns was great, but returning home each day to relax, enjoy our surroundings both inside and out were the best. Hospitality was amaziing, gourmet kitchen, every amenity you could need. Thanks for sharing this home to travelers.

This house was absolutely wonderful. It was very spacious, had everything you could possibly need from olive oil to coffee tea pots pans, barbecue. There are two sizeable bedrooms-one on the mezzanine with ensuite and one downstairs with larger bathroom and doors to the outside terrace. The only downside to this property was the trickiness of the driveway. While we mastered it after a couple of days, it was quite hair rising initially and needs to be taken very slowly.

What a wonderful stay at this beautiful house. There is nothing you need while staying here. They have thought of everything! We stayed here for a week and loved exploring all the hilltop towns. The views are amazing, the beds and bedding are so comfortable! The first Italy property that has had a washer AND dryer and we really appreciated that. The driveway is more than challenging but we managed to make it up and down every day. This property is worth it in every respect.

The home is beautiful, the view overlooks the hill town of Spoleto, and they have thought of everything. The home is surrounded by forest and trees, and there are a few sitting areas where we could enjoy coffee in the morning or wine in the evening. The bed and shower were comfortable, with nice bedding and towels, and the kitchen was completely equipped. We really appreciated the washer/dryer. In short, the home felt like being home and was one of the highlights of our vacation. As others have written, the only challenge is the driveway going up to the house, as it is narrow and requires a very small car with a lot of power (and even then, might require some three-point turns.)

Above all the Rest
This place is like no other. We felt like trusted guests welcomed into a special home that wants to share its story. We feel fortunate to dwell in that history and to become a part of it. So often vacation rentals are devoid of character and soul….not here. Generosity and abundance are evident in every way. Everything worked; there were more than enough wine glasses; plenty of towels; sharp knives; original artwork; and the furniture, both inside and outside was comfortable, authentic and of very good quality (not cheap, low quality stuff that is feels disrespectful of the guests.). That consideration behooved us to take care of things as if they were our own belonging and it allowed us to relax, thrive and celebrate our time there…which we did maximally. We even mastered the ascent and descent of the driveway which became a certain right of passage! We are grateful to have been here. We are planning our return.

Unforgettable vacation in Umbria!
Truly an amazing property in many ways. Owners have quite an exquisite taste and invested quite a bit of their time, money and attention to every little detail, which made this place truly a high-end boutique rental. Lots of beautiful art on the walls. Kitchen has everything you can possibly think of - and then some:) Super comfy beds with satin sheets and down pillows. Modern bathrooms, plenty of hot water. Working fireplaces. Overall everything you can possibly think of for a relaxing stay we were able to find here.
And as the perfect backdrop - stunning views of Spoleto from the bedroom terrace and the living room..
PS. The only thing I would suggest is adding some shade on terrace adjacent to the main bedroom, which would allow to spend more time outside enjoying the view. Also the driveway is quite steep, we had an automatic car and it took us a couple of tries to figure out how to handle it.

Magnificent view of Spoleto
We were so thrilled with our stay at the Artist's Tower. The house, the setting and the view are beyond compare. The garden is well tended and lovely. Inside the house has undergone recent renovation to a very high standard while maintaining the character and historic feel of the house. The art collection is very personal. Many of the works are by the artist who lived there (now deceased). The house is very commodious and spacious and the amenities are excellent. The owner desires to make you feel pampered and succeeds. There are 12 each of three types of lovely wine glasses. There were basic supplies of all types including sponges, dishwashing materials, pasta, oil, vinegar, herbs, salt and pepper and multiple other things. Shampoo and shower gel. The heat was wonderful (and we needed it during our stay) and the wifi worked flawlessly. We ate out on the outdoor table for lunch and my wife said that it brought her to tears because it was so beautiful. We could not find anything to fault. The only drawback, which is mentioned in the property description, is the difficult driveway. It really is challenging, but it is possible to do and it is worth the effort for the gorgeous situation--isolated on the mountain overlooking Spoleto with no other things to spoil the view. We sincerely hope to return for the joy of staying in the house alone, not to mention the fabulous surrounding Umbrian towns and countryside.

The owner, Sophie, is great - professional, friendly, prompt to reply, accommodating - a real joy to deal with. The house itself is beyond exquisite - we came here from a palazzo in Venice and this was by far more glorious (albeit in a less regal way). Read all the other 5 star reviews, they are all correct. The place has only 2 issues - the driveway and entry to the road (as mentioned elsewhere) is tough, you need some confidence as a driver and the right vehicle (I suggest a rear wheel drive manual or 4WD with a good turning circle and plenty of HP) - we had a Citroen C5 and it struggled to get up the 1 hairpin in the dry. The real issue though is the noise - the house is wonderfully located in a heavily wooded area (no neighbours we could see or hear) on a hill overlooking Spoleto - at the bottom of that hill is the SS3 Flaminia (less than 1km away) and the traffic noise travels endlessly up the hill which, for us, made the terrace unusable. However, if such noise doesn't bother you I would recommend the place unreservedly.

A real gem, but for us it unfortunately came with a real flaw

Incredible Stay
Beautiful house and setting with panoramic views over Spoleto. If I could move here today, I would. Everything you could wish for in a rental. Sophie is fantastic, responsive, and considerate. We hope to revisit often.

Everything about this house is absolutely perfect, good kitchen, there is a beautiful garden, inside and outside incredibly tastefully decorated and views over Spoleto. We felt immediately at home. Excess road is possible also for bigger cars (Audi A6) but one need to practice a bit so make sure you will arrive at daylight.

Wonderful stay
The Torre is a really great place to stay. With the recent improvements even better. This is our third stay. Sophie is really good to deal with and always very helpful. I encourage anyone to stay here. Spoleto is a delightful place.

Typically Italian
This is a spacious well equipped property in an excellent location not just for the view but for exploring Umbria. The kitchen diner is particularly large for an Italian house.
We did not get the weather for using the outside space unfortunately, but in warm sunny conditions would be idyllic.
Of other comments regarding the access, I would say it is short with a good concrete surface but was a bit slippery in the wet and the exit on to the main road needs care.
The owner Sophie is really friendly and was most helpful during our stay.

Peaceful
Setting is spectacular, house well furnished, clean and welcoming. It is well worth the effort to climb up to it. The best vehicle to make the climb is a small, powerful car with manual transmission. Our Alfa Giulietta automatic had a difficult time even converted to manual. Would do it again in a heartbeat but with a different car.

We have been looking at this villa for a few years, itwas everything we had wished it was..
Spoleto is easily accessible from the villa if you enjoy the walk (shame the viaduct isn’t open - although you would have to have a head for heights).House is fully equipped with everything you need and is certainly a home from home.
Lots of choice of good restaurants in town and lots of places to visit close by like Foligno, Spello, Gubbio, Montone and many more. Only slight downside is the drive but after you get it once it’s fine after that. We should have got the car we booked a Fiat 4x4, that would have done it easily. We have enjoyed another lovely Italian holiday.

Wonderful house, wonderful setting
The house was comfortable and cool, despite hot weather. Our favorite part was a walk in the hills but level called the Giro dei Condotti, over a mile with gorgeous views of Spoleto. It also passes by an abandoned monastery and an abandoned hermit hut, and it crosses the property at the bottom of the driveway. The driveway is very steep, with hairpin turns, and if like us you are out of practice with a straight shift on challenging hills, you should start refreshing your skills now. Driveway apart, our two weeks were magical.

Spoleto charming and full of interest. The steeple and tortuous access became a problem when the driver had an inner-ear problem: rescued by the wonderful Sophie and Franco, who provided taxi service and support with hospital visits. Cured within 48hrs (Hospital Staff were super): these were the days it rained. The views, the crepuscular visits by wild boar piglets after the fallen figs, the hot tub... each a delight. Such a shame the aqueduct remains closed, even to pedestrians, or it would have been an unqualified success. Being too mean to hire mr AVIS' satnav, got wonderfully lost between Spoleto and Orvieto: the scenery was magnificent. I will aim to get lost again the next time I visit! The unexpected gem was Bevagna, ancient, solid, largely unspoiled: well with a visit, if only to slow down even more.

Lovely home in a stunning location.
Much more than a typical AirBnb rental, this property feels like a home. Tastefully decorated and very spacious. Great kitchen, well-equipped. The fireplace was very welcome given the weather during our stay. The bathrooms were recently completely remodeled and were superb. Across the Ponte delle Torri from Spoleto, we felt as if we were a world away, but in fact Spoleto was easily accessible. A great place to stay for an extended period of time if you plan to explore the many small towns in Umbria. Fantastic access to innumerable hiking trails. The host, Sophie was very responsive and very accommodating. The only drawback is that the driveway leading to this hillside house is not for the faint-of-heart!

Sublime Getaway
La Torre is a unique and wonderful place to stay in a beautiful location. Full of character echoing its artistic past, La Torre is a relaxing and comfortable retreat, with stunning views across the valley to Spoleto. Easy access to the good regional road network allows exploration of the beautiful surrounding area with many, many historic hill towns to delight in.

A great place to relax
We absolutely loved our stay here. It was our first holiday without kids and our main objective was to relax and do as little as possible. We couldn't have found anywhere better. It was 2 days before we even walked into town and that was mainly because we needed to buy more wine !
The house was lovely inside and stayed cool despite the 30+ temperature outside. But there is plenty of shade for sitting out in the garden as well. Being on a hillside there was often a gentle breeze which was nice.
The views were lovely too: Spoleto in the morning from the living room, the distant hills from the spa pool, and the stars at night from outside the bedroom.
Sophie was incredibly helpful as well. We hadn't hired a car so she provided transport from the station when we arrived and took us back at the end of our stay. She also provided invaluable assistance when we needed to go to the local hospital and we cannot thank her enough.
Unfortunately we didn't get to experience walking over the bridge to Spoleto due to it being closed for inspection following the earthquake. The alternative route down the road was certainly a bit longer and felt hot walking back up but the spa was great for soothing tired legs. Oh well, we'll just have to come back when the bridge reopens !

Lovely setting with spectacular views.
The Torre is very well placed to explore the town of Spoleto and the walk over the aqueduct is stunning. The location and the views and lovely walks straight from the property are what makes this such a lovely place to stay. It would have been helpful to have been advised of the steep driveway so that we could hire a suitable car that is small but has a flexible engine.

Bello Spoleto
Our last night of a beautiful 10 days in Le Torre del Artista overlooking the lovely town of Spoleto. Everything perfect...the house, the town, the weather and of course Umbria. The perfect location to explore this part of Italy and the perfect house to return to each day to relax and plan the next!
Many thanks.

Unique and beautiful house in the forest.
This is our second 3 week stay at this beautiful house. The setting in a wonderful garden surrounded by the oak forest is. You also can be in Spoleto in 10 minutes by walking down a path in the trees and across the Ponte which is breathtaking. Spoleto is such a special place and you will feel very Italian here. Friendly people, wonderful food and culture. And a great place to hike or bicycle as will as explore the lovely towns nearby. The caretaker Sophie is so kind and helpful and has lots of suggestions if you need them. The house has a little noise from the water system, but not too bad. Really a special place.

All it promises, and more
Make your friends insanely jealous – send them the photos of this house where you will be staying. Then prepare yourself for how much the pictures can’t capture. The views of Spoleto are majestic. The house is so secluded and seems so far above everything, but you can walk to town in no time. An easy path from the house through the woods, across the imposing ponte, past the Rocca, and you’re there. Just 16 minutes to the cattedrale – but wear good shoes.
In fact, the town is so walkable that there’s no need for a car at all unless you want to do a lot of day trips. Since we had none, Franco, who comes by every few days to tend the gardens, offered to drive us to Norcia for the day. We were content to stay close to home and explore. It was clear that some of the other visitors have taken the bus and train to other towns nearby. That’s what we’ll do next time.
We were here for the festival, so there was probably more energy and activity than usual in town. Still, the house is so nice that one day we scrapped our plans just to lounge around. Our biggest move that day was from the chaise lounges under the grape vines to the table for lunch, to another lounge chair outside to nap in the sun. Though it was unseasonable warm while we were there, the walls of the house are so thick that it stayed cool and comfortable inside.
On the grounds we counted olive, plum, fig, pear, and peach trees, but only the peaches were starting to be ripe yet. As city dwellers, we were blown away by how peaceful it was. Somewhere in the distance we could hear a rooster and cars winding up the road, but they were a world away.
The torre is fantastic. It has an old soul with modern conveniences. Sophie, the caretaker, was easy to reach and responsive to any questions and needs we had. The place is neat as a pin, decorated beautifully, and laid out to anticipate anything a traveler could want. Next time we’ll come back when it’s a little cooler so we can use the fireplaces!

Escape to Umbria
The studio is snuggled into a steeply wooded hillside with far reaching views over Spoleto and the hills beyond. The garden stretches to the side and above the house with a plant festooned pergola to give shade for outdoor living. The house is entrancing. Chestnut beams and rafters and a double height living room with windows providing the opportunity to just sit and watch the changing light and landscape. For colder nights there are 2 open fires and a supply of logs. Lots of books, eclectic pictures and artwork and a hot tub for early mornings and cooler evenings. It felt like walking into a house that the owner had just left ready for us to enjoy. There is a lovely warm feel to it. The countryside spoils with flora and fauna. In september the cyclamen were in flower along the path through the woods to the viaduct. Spoleto has much to see and also to sit and people watch. Lovely people, good food, space and exquisite countryside and fortified hilltop villages in the Valnerina district. With a car, there are opportunities to visit picturesque villages and towns further afield all with a wealth of beautiful buildings and churches. Thank you to Sophie who was efficiency and friendliness personified both before and after our holiday. We loved it and hope to return soon.

A delight
Walking into the studio is like being enfolded in a warm embrace with stupendous views over a shoulder! We loved everything, the eclectic arty decor, the facilities, the views, the chestnut beams and rafters, the location with walks on the doorstep and Spoleto itself. Although the end of September, the weather was generally sunny and warm just right for walking and seeing places of interest. Sophie is a lovely friendly lady who we knew would be available for us if needed. I do hope that we will be able to return one day.

Magical location
This home is charming and even better than the photos. The view of Spoleto, the flowers surrounding the house in its perch on the hillside and the comfort of the living areas make this place very special. It is walking distance across an ancient viaduct into Spoleto. It is decorated to feel like a real home. Sophia was fantastic to work with from beginning to end.

Idyllic hide-away!
We loved the spaciousness and the quietness of this gorgeous house! It was like being in someone-else's home, not in a holiday rental, with every appliance and facility you could imagine and more, though the HiFi needed some attention. It was nice not to have a TV as you got to appreciate all that the house had to offer.
The view over Spoleto and the castle was lovely and the short walk to town, across the aqueduct, delightful.
It was easy to find the meeting point if directions were followed though we failed to do this, holding up dear Franco for hours, sorry Franco. Both Sophie and Franco were very patient, accommodating and helpful.
We would certainly recommend this house to anyone as it is well located for visits to the many beautiful, hilltop towns of Umbria.
The driveway is a challenge but certainly do-able with a bit of confidence and patience (from the passenger, that is!)
We loved Cantina di Corvi and Il Tempio di Gusto Restuarants in Sploeto, as recommended in the guestbook. Thank you!
