- Mesa Verde National Park: For a glimpse into the lives of the ancient Pueblo people, Mesa Verde National Park features more than 5,000 archaeological sites. Just 35 miles west of Durango, this park also offers hiking, camping, museums and restaurants.
- For hiking and backpacking enthusiasts, the Weminuche Wilderness lies just 15 miles northeast of Durango. Because of long-lasting winter snow, the best time to visit is from July through early September. Favorite hikes include the Continental Divide Trail and a trek to the Highland Mary Lakes.
