Perfect budget option in San Francisco Downtown

Perfect location in Union Square zone. Free breakfast included. Staff was really friendly. The private bedroom with bathroom I shared with my daughter was really nice. We store our luggage during a two day trip to Yosemite without any problem or cost. Price was unbeatable for San Francisco.

Everything met my expectations, considering that it's a hostel, not a hotel.

Great place to stay! Clean, affordable, friendly!

Can't say enough good things about this hostel. I left a more detailed review for another set of dates that I stayed here. It's clean, desk staff and housekeeping staff are wonderful, the location is very central to lots of fun things and the rates are great. Stay here if you can! It's got a great vibe!

Great hostel. Friendly, clean, good location, excellent rates!

I've stayed here several times. It is truly one of the best hostels I've ever stayed in. Desk staff is friendly and very helpful, with lots of helpful tips for getting around the city. The place is super clean! Considering that there are several shared hallway bathrooms and shower rooms and so many people using them, the place remains pretty impeccable. I always see the housekeeping staff cleaning! Well done! And they are always very kind and cheerful. The location is very central to many other parts of the city. You do need to be careful as parts of downtown are sketchy to say the least. Just be aware of your surroundings is my best advice. The hostel itself is EXTREMELY safe with their locked front door and 24 hour desk staff. And there are also parts of the area that are perfectly fine and easy to walk around. San Francisco is a wonderful city! Recently, I very absent mindedly left my backpack in the lobby for about 30 minutes. I rushed back for it and it had been put behind the desk. I don't recommend forgetting such a thing, as I did :D but if you are going to leave behind something important, chances are it will will be there at this hostel. Of course no one can guarantee such a thing, but it was my experience! I highly recommend this hostel! Thank you Hostelling International Downtown!

Exceptional

Love the location. It's near public transportation. Powell station is the nearest if you come from the airport. Breakfast is enough for me. The kitchen is clean and there is free water, tea and coffee. The bedroom and bathroom are clean. Check in and check out are easy. The staff is kind, polite and friendly. I don't use the lounge because i always go back late.

the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, the included wifi and breakfast was extremely appreciated.

ammenities were a bit outdated, but the showers were hot and they were kept relatively clean.

The staff was very nice and friendly, the room itself was comfortable with cleanliness maintained and fresh towels every other day. The location is decent, but it's right at the edge of Tenderlion which isn't the safest area and coming back at night to this hostel wasn't the safest experience. But for the most part, it was alright, and I liked that it was close to shops and transport. The shared facilities were also kept clean which was really good and I had a comfortable stay.

I think there was a problem with the cage under my bed (lower bunk), it would get stuck all the time, and when I forced it out, it would snag against the bed mesh base and create a lot of noise. My roommates were very nice people who understood the problem, but it still wasn't nice that everyone would get disturbed by it. The flooring and toilet/bathroom door creaked a lot too, which made it difficult to move, or use the toilet when everyone else was asleep.

So I am gonna give three stars for my experience at the hostel more than just the ambience. While the front desk staff was nice about having my check in advanced since i arrived early - here are some things that dindt work well The first guy i shared the room with was visibly pissed and borderline aggressive. The first instance is that he mistook the dent in the washrooms for dirt and assumed I made them. He then went on to say people 'like me' shouldn't be allowed to stay in places like this. He then went to the washroom again and found the floor towel there and agin mistook that somebody had left their son the floor and was almost again murmuring and aggressive that I thought he would get physical. I went out during the day to avoid any altercation and when i came back I had informed this to the staff there who told me he had given them trouble as well and he was moved to another room. Phew! The next gentleman who shared a room with me said it was maybe an instance of being racially profiled and I shouldn't have let it happen. Being a tourist from a different country I wasn't sure how to go about seeking redressal for that though. The second problem was the BED BUGS. I was bitten really bad on my fingers, neck and back. i had informed this at the front desk who then said they would inform their manager. While the gentleman who shared the room with me and I were given another room. I would expect nothing less than a refund. It was funny that I was told by manager that they treat it with utmost priority but it happens in the best of hotels also. I don't think that is a justification for having bugs in your rooms. I would expect nothing less than a refund for this sorta experience Besides that yea the hostel has elaborate spaces for you to chill, their kitchens are much elaborate that places I have been to earlier with a lot of options to cook and store your food. Would I come back?
