My partner and I booked a long weekend here and it was the perfect place to enjoy quality time together. The view is so incredible, even better in the hot tub! And the hosts were so responsive and proactive, so helpful with every question we had. They even helped us navigate the bumpy road when it was covered in snow!

We enjoyed the cabin and its amenities.

I'll start by saying this was my first time ever staying in the mountains. Not my husbands first rodeo, but most definitely mine and I was nervous. We arrived late in the evening, and despite unfamiliar terrority, mountain road, and freezing rain, we made it up relatively easily. We pulled into a wrong driveway because I didn't follow the instructions Howard provided and simply trusted our GPS. Howard immediately answered our phone call and our mistake was easily and patiently resolved. The road to the cabin is maintained and good. Upon arrival, we were blown away. Beautiful cabin, beautiful layout, and secure but easy entrance.
Binoculars are provided. We did bring our own, but were happy to find another set. The view is astonishing, for a new mountain viewer or a veteran. My husband was quite thrilled to discover even chilled beer mugs were provided! We did bring our two daughters (9 & 14) and both girls were quite content with us to not even worry about venturing out. They didn't want to leave. We brought our two St Bernard/Poodle mix male large dogs. Space can be an issue with their size, but the mountain, deck, and interior space was plenty for them to enjoy the trip right along with us.
Howard is a wonderful host to work with and we were so grateful for this beautiful home he has built. We will definitely be returning to enjoy this escape.
Thank you very much sir!

Typical gravel mountain driveway. Not too rough but would recommend SUV/awd/4wd especially in winter.
Beautiful views, open floor plan. Easy drive to West Jefferson or Boone areas.

This cabin is beautiful. Upon arrival, we entered the door to the kitchen and dining area and it was a dream. The highlights for us: the views, porch, the hot tub, and the fireplace. We were celebrating our 20th year anniversary and it was our first time staying in a cabin because we've had a camper that we usually pull everywhere. We did it RIGHT our first time. It was so beautiful and relaxing, we only left to buy groceries to cook. We plan to go back with our teenagers next time. :)

We had a great time at the Great Escape. The views are absolutely spectacular. As much as we like to sleep in, getting up to watch the sun come over the mountains was so worth it. Very secluded private place, all the sounds of nature surrounding you. A short 20 minute drive to West Jefferson, that is a fun mountain town. The cabin is well stocked, and has just about anything you need. We really enjoyed our stay, and plan on returning again!

This house is so beautiful. The woodwork makes this feel like a real cabin. The owner has it equipped for his guests to be comfortable. We had a wonderful and relaxing stay especially with the hot tub on the deck with those beautiful views of the mountains.

Amazing stay as always. We got to add seeing a snake and two deer to our wildlife spotting while staying at the cabin. The views were as breathtaking as ever and allowed for game night to be had with a view. The hot tub was once again a hit for the kids and proved a great way to relax after horseback riding in town for the adults. Mr. Shipman’s hospitality was too notch as always! We look forward to another return trip in the future.

We had a fabulous tranquil stay at the Great Escape and can’t wait to return. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time on the deck listening to nature with the panoramic views. This is the spot to unwind and relax with fresh air and scenery of the NC mountains with the comforts of a beautiful cabin. Thank you Howard for sharing this special place with us.

The Great Escape was a real gem in the mountains around West Jefferson. We loved the house and the layout. The back deck is wonderful. The owner Howard was very helpful. We try to get to this area every year. We loved it

The property needs sprucing up. Couches are uncomfortable, needs new mattress in bedroom and new bath towels. Needs a good cleaning on fans and baseboards . Hot tub had scum floating. We cleaned that and filtered the tub well.
We loved the view! The owner was helpful and attentive before we arrived. In your info page you want to say there are 20 stairs to get in.

The views were breathtaking at this cabin. Some of the information in the listing as well as the information book at the cabin seemed outdated. We really enjoyed spending time together with our dog on the deck enjoying the view.

We thought we might stay at the cabin most of the week, and when we saw it we knew... We only left twice to resupply food. Very relaxing, quite, and peaceful. We had the opportunity to meet the owner and his co-pilot "Hoshi". Thanks Howard for being pet-friendly.

I can't say enough good things about this slice of heaven. Amazing views. All the amenities. The owner pretty much has thought of everything. Loved venturing down the mountain and having a huge kitchen and grill to comeback too and cook in. King size bed was comfy too. Plus, you're in the middle of everything. So cool exploring the different areas and feeling their unique charms. And for being so remote, the internet connection was extremely fast. I had one question and emailed the owner and he was back to me in an hour. Great service. I will warn you the drive up the mountain was a little rough and steep so heed his warning. Overall: 5 stars!

We stayed at the "Great Escape" for our 30th anniversary trip. It was WONDERFUL! The house was clean and well equipped. The hot tub was divine. And the views are absolutely amazing! The sunrises, and sunsets are breathtaking. I can't say enough good things about this cabin! It is convenient to Boone, Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mtn., West Jefferson and the Blue Ridge Parkway. What little communication I had with the host was quick and easy, but we didn't need much communication because everything was easy, working and clean. We would definitely recommend this cabin to couples and families with one or two younger kids and/or dogs. There is only one bedroom, but 2 or 3 sofa beds.. There is a pool table downstairs and a sauna. But we preferred the hot tub and views. 5 Stars all the way!

Don't even know where to begin. But I can tell you that we enjoyed every second of the escape. From right after booking all the way till 11am the day we had to leave - even played one last pool game before we left.
You won't regret staying here, the views, the cabin, the porch swing, the hot tub, the location and even the adventure of getting to the cabin itself! The house is open concept and amazing for pets on the fenced in patio.

If you are looking for a true escape from the daily hustle of life and technology, look no further. Everything you need is here, being your food, you may not want to leave the cabin the entire stay.
Howard is quick to respond and genuinely kind!!! We will be returning, this one is a keeper ❤️
