Situated in Antigua and Barbuda, this charming villa for $549 per night is a fantastic option for your next vacation. Shell Villa is tucked away inside Turtle Bay on the south coast of Antigua, just west of Falmouth Harbour. Enjoy utter privacy and quiet as you sit on its large ocean-front deck and gaze at the spectacular sunsets over gently smoking Montserrat. Surrounded by stunning vistas of ocean and the gentle slopes surrounding Rendezvous Bay, not a single building mars the view - a very private piece of paradise. Shell Villa has been approved by the Government as COVID compliant. Guests will be met at the airport by Valentino, who will drive you to the Villa, or guide you if you hire a car. The property has four double bedrooms, all with air conditioning and ensuite bathrooms. Beds can be made up as king size or full size twins as preferred. The fifth bedroom has full size bunk beds. Shell Villa has a large kitchen with fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and a spacious living/dining area with high speed internet. Shell Cottage has a living room with porch and a small kichenette with half bath. The Villa is fully equipped and furnished and has weekly garden, pool and maid service. The gardens and pool (with sun deck and barbecue) are planted with gorgeous bougainvillaea, hibiscus, and palms. Self sustaining and environmentally friendly, Shell Villa has solar panels with a backup generator and also has mains electricity. Voltage is US style 110/60 cycles. A short stroll along Turtle Bay there is a small pebble beach with sea shells and sea birds aplenty. The Villa and the Cottage feature original art works by Jenny Freestone, co-owner with her husband David. Jenny is a well-known printmaker whose work is exhibited in a number of art collections in the US, including the Library of Congress. They are visited by some of the most fabulous yachts in the world - catch them with binoculars as they majestically sail across the ocean view from Shell Villa. The constant flow of private yachts, their crew and guests, ensure a lively social scene and a plentiful supply of excellent restaurants, cafes and bars in these harbours. Villa very well located near all the services of English Harbour. Very clean, complete and consistent with the photos. Several beach accessories and games are on site. Perfect villa for family!

The villa was perfect for our vacation with 2 friends. The view from the deck and pool, with the waves gently rolling on the rocks, is perfect for relaxing. Air conditiioned ensuite bedrooms are roomy and comfortable. Kitchen is amply supplied with utensils and appliances.

We had an amazing stay at Shell Villa with our two adult children. Clare (the property manager) welcomed us to the villa when we checked in and gave us information about the property and the local attractions. The house is right on the water and has stunning views from the pool and deck and living areas of the house. Breezes from the ocean and the sound of waves fills every room of the house. The kitchen was well provisioned and we enjoyed cooking several family meals on nights when we wanted to enjoy the sunset view and deck instead of going to local restaurants. The information that was provided about the house and the English Harbor neighborhood was helpful throughout our stay. The house was very clean and beautifully outfitted with everything we needed, including beach chairs and umbrellas for our excursions. I highly recommend Shell Villa for a family vacation or a gathering of couples or friends. The three bedrooms are private with comfortable beds and ensuite bathrooms. We absolutely loved our time at Shell Villa and are already thinking about a return visit.

Who wouldn’t want a totally private cottage right on the water with huge yachts and sailboat going by? My wife and I found this cottage to be well equipped in the kitchen and the owners provided a nice supply of food to start the stay.
The beds were great and though the bedrooms are air conditioned we preferred the ceiling fan and hearing the ocean waves crashing on the rocks.
We found we loved staying on the deck by the pool so much that we shortened our beach stays to return to the comforts of the cottage.
Clare, the manager of the property was great and even had our first night’s dinner waiting for us when we arrived.
Overall, this property is an incredible value. It is a 10 out of 10.

The Shell Villa was everything as described and more. Clare and Nathan (the property managers) and Valentino (the driver) were very friendly and welcoming. Clare and Nathan responded quickly when we had any questions or needed something. It was so nice to have items in the refrigerator to get us started when we arrived. The house was very clean and comfortable. The pool is well maintained and the deck was very comfortable for lounging and dining. It was nice to sit outside and the watch the sun set in the evening and view the stars at night. There are great views of the bay. The grounds were well tended and full of nice flowering plants and birds. The grill is state of the art and you get a great view as you cook. We are definitely interested in returning to the Shell Villa.

We had a fantastic time. Beautiful property directly on the water. Picked up by Valentino (arranged by owners) who quickly brought us to the house. Upon arrival we met the super nice caretakers. You do need a rental SUV as there is nowhere to walk to. The road to the villa is rough- be sure to get an SUV. Wishing we had gone with the company suggested by the owners as Avis “ran out” of SUV’s at the airport. Villa is well equipped and was the perfect setting for a relaxing week. Best for guests with knowledge of the area. We never left the English Harbor village as everything we needed was within 10 minutes. Can’t wait to return!

This place is paradise. We loved how close it is to the ocean and it has big storm windows along the side of the house so that when cooking it can feel as if your on the sea. I often felt like we were in a house boat, it is so close to the water. We still miss the music at night of the waves crashing and the frogs billowing with happiness. We also loved the pool, convenient for cooling off mid chapter. This home has a wonderful feel, super remote, yet only minutes from town. The people of Antigua are so gracious and beautiful, more so than any island I've visited, we felt safe and welcomed.
We drove down the rocky road to rendezvous beach and got our rental car stuck just before dark and sent a text to Clair, within 15 mins here came Nathan with a tow rope and pulled us out. They (the hosts) were always available to answer our silly touristy questions with humor and we felt well cared for.
We both could go on and on about how much we loved this house and island and are already planning to come back next year. Thank you so much for sharing your spectacular home!

This property has it all, it’s well equipped, has excellent property management and the owners are very easy to communicate with. The views over the Caribbean seas are beautiful, the sound of the waves are very relaxing to listen to and it is so private, in most seating areas you literally cannot see another property and even on the day beds/deck it’s just a few properties on the hill in the distance. It’s a long bumpy track from the main road so definitely recommend a 4x4/SUV but you soon learn where the worst pot holes and bumps are. The property itself is lovely, the kitchen well equipped and you can tell that this is the owners Caribbean retreat and not just a run of the mill vacation rental. The air conditioning in the bedroom was a god send, even with the great trade winds you receive so close to the ocean, the humidity so was intense having a cool room to sleep in was a must. The pool is a great place to cool off and the BBQ area would be great for a large group to dine, but as there was only two of us we really couldn’t make full use of the property facilities. This property is perfect for the larger or extended family vacation, especially with the newly built shell cottage at the back. We even had a tropical storm whilst we were there, the property managers where very proactive in making sure the property and furniture were all secure incase it got too intense, they even made up the bed upstairs in shell cottage just incase we were concerned about the ocean, however I watched the waves getting bigger and bigger as the storm approached and the rock breakers on the shore do a very good job of dissipating even the largest of waves, long before they got to the last protection of the mangroves at the bottom of the garden.
The restaurants in Falmouth harbour are definitely worth visiting and there are plenty of things to see and do in the local area. Shopping wise there are a few smaller supermarkets locally within 10 minutes drive that sell the basics but it’s worth drive to St. John’s and visiting the epicurean if you want to do a full shop as this place is huge and has everything you may want or need, it’s also cheaper than the local supermarkets. We went to the Sunday Shirley Heights music/BBQ evening, music and drinks were good but I wasn’t overly impressed with the food. If you choose to do this i would say plan to eat before or after and just enjoy the drinks and entertainment. Overall I would recommend this property and give it 5*

Ocean view
We were are amazed with the house. Great time. The managers were so nice, it DID NOT disapoint. Our only issue was the roads in. Other than that it was great. Anyone going there will relax by pool and ocean, the breezes coming in thru the windows, relaxing was my favorite thing to do. Thank you so much.

Absolutely the Best
We couldn't have wished for anywhere more perfect for our long awaited trip to Antigua. Shell Villa is a beautiful property in a stunning location. It's so quiet and private - all you can hear is the sound of the waves which are right at the bottom of the garden! The villa itself is really well appointed with an excellent kitchen and super comfy beds. The pool and sun deck complete with outdoor kitchen were perfect for days at home and the views across to Monserrat and the passing super yachts are amazing. Falmouth Harbour with shops and restaurants is just a short drive away which is great for dinners out and stocking up on supplies. The property was completely spotless and well organised when we arrived and was looked after by lovely staff during our stay. The owners of Shell Villa together with Nathan and Clare who manage the property made us feel so welcome and everything about visiting was really easy and straightforward. Our only complaint was that we had to eventually leave!

Wonderful
Absolutely loved everything about this rental! The House, it’s amenities, the owners and property managers were all wonderful. Everything was clean, in excellent condition and working order. The kitchen is truly a chef’s kitchen; which was awesome if you want to cook/prepare a few meals in. Beach essentials such as mats, chairs, coolers, noodles, inflatables, snorkel gear and sand toys were available.
Loved sitting on the patio looking at the water and watching the sunset. The only thing one needs to do is rent a 4x4 as the road to the house does have some dips and holes which need to be navigated. The higher clearance helps to speed up trip to house as you can more easily avert potentially bottoming out a car if not careful in a few spots.
Don’t hesitate renting this villa - you will not be disappointed- just blown away! Looking forward to coming back next year.

We had a wonderful time on vacation at Shell Villa. It was a perfect place for our two couples to rest and relax. There were many beaches within a short drive. Also there were many nice restaurants for lunch and dinner in and around Falmouth Harbour. The pool was perfect for the warm sunny afternoons. The view of the sunsets was nothing short of amazing! I would highly recommend Shell Villa.

Outstanding!!!
We feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience this wonderful Villa, particularly it’s breathtakingly beautiful and private location on the Caribbean sea with un-interrupted 180 degrees south/south west facing views of Montserrat and gorgeous sunsets (practically a ‘green flash’ every night!). With COVID upending the world in so many ways, our family of four had a wonderful time relaxing together while still participating in virtual university classes and running our business (wifi is such a blessing!). The Villa has a nice open floor plan with 3 en-suite bedrooms and several French doors and shutters that opens up to a sizable wrap around deck which accommodates the plunge pool, BBQ, dining table and sun loungers, all in good working order. While at home we kept the doors and windows wide open filling the house with the sound of waves and the warm soothing breeze. In fact, looking out the large windows facing the sea with the waves rolling in it at times felt like being on a yacht. The kitchen is super well stocked with all the pots, pans and utensils one could ever need, a dishwasher, large fridge freezer and a brand new cooker. There’s also a washing machine in the Master bathroom. The Villa is five minutes drive from Falmouth Harbour with many good and/or fun restaurants. Some of our favorites include the Pillars, Boom, 5 Senses, Catherine’s, Cloggy’s and Le Brasserie.
On the topic of food, we recommend going to the Epicurean in Jolly Harbour (30 minutes drive) for the ‘big’ shop (they have lots of Waitrose products because of the many British expats that live in the area), then to top up as needed locally, either at Covent Garden or the supermarket across from Antigua Yacht Club in Falmouth. We bought most of our fresh produce from the street vendor by the gas station in Falmouth. A hire car is a ‘must’ in order to get to and from the Villa and because the roads are poor a Jeep is the way to go. Titi’s in Falmouth Harbour is as good and fair as it gets. In fact, Titi’s even delivered the Jeep to the Villa. As mentioned by previous guests, we’d like to recognize Nathan and Clare for their thoughtful and immediate attention. And a special call out to the Freestone’s for sharing their treasure with us. Such a very nice touch to have the fridge stocked with a few goodies and essentials on arrival, and to be met by Valentino at the airport including transfer to the Villa. Thank you! We highly recommend this Villa.

When you arrive, the view takes your breath away. It is very difficult to find a property with the privacy and a view like Shell Villa. The owners and the managers did everything possible to make our stay as comfortable as possible. I highly recommend this property. Kitchen is well stocked, and the outdoor grill is perfect. Rooms are comfortably air conditioned and dark so that you can rest peacefully.

You smile every time you return home
As beautiful as Antigua is, it always gave us a smile at the end of every day to pull open our pool gate and walk into one of the most breathtaking views in all of the Caribbean. The light, the sound, the air itself infuses this villa's atmosphere with a magical quality that never got old. Beds are super comfortable, linens are fresh and clean, kitchen and amenities and appointments tasteful and considered... We enjoyed every moment and would highly recommend it to anyone. This is a great choice if you're thinking about Falmouth Harbor and Antigua. Even better if you want three bedrooms with ensuite baths--a pool and the most spectacular views.

Amazing sunsets and views. Nothing better than waking up in the morning in this gorgeous spot and opening all the windows and shutters to listen to the waves roll in on the beach.

Paradise by the Sea
Shell Villa is everything the listing description claims, but better! It’s actually better than the photos. Photographs can’t capture the sound of the waves or the smell of the sea or the warmth of the sun or the cool of the breeze or way those things combine to soothe your soul and take away your cares.
You can probably tell we loved this place, so I’ll get to the point: if you’re thinking about it, don’t hesitate, just book it. You won’t be sorry. This may be the most comfortable, well equipped VRBO we’ve stayed in yet.
The three en-suite bedrooms are private and air conditioned. The beds were comfortable and well made up. Solar hot water heat is supplemented with an electric heater, but we only used it once. The pool was a perfect temp for cooling off without being chilly and we used it frequently. An outdoor shower on the deck is a nice touch. We spent a lot of time on the deck sunning and watching the fab yachts passing by. The views of Montserrat, Rendezvous beach and the surrounding mountains never get old. The kitchen is fully gourmet equipped and is supplemented with an excellent outdoor grill to avoid heating up the living space. There’s a variety of outdoor seating to accommodate everyone (we loved the big hammock!) Shelly the cat was a wonderful companion.
The only caveat I would mention to others is the road back to the villa is rough and largely unpacked. I’d strongly recommend a sturdy vehicle with decent ground clearance and good tires if you’re renting. We saw two taxis get flats out front, but we managed the whole week without issues (including a foray over the mountain to Rendezvous!) in our rented 4x4.
So that’s it. Book Shell Villa and rent a SUV and get ready to make memories!
Thanks to Jenny & David for the use of their home, Claire & Nathan for the warm welcome and orientation, Valentino & Marley for the expert transport, Juicy for the local flavor & advice, and Emma for seeing us off. You were all great!

Totally Awesome stay ! Wonderful relaxing holiday
We loved our visit to Shell Villa. It is perfect in every way. The location is stunning – right on the ocean with a wide deck, ideal for sun bathing, sun downers at sun set and star gazing. We even saw the famous blue flash once as the sun set into the sea. The house is set in a very pretty garden with lots of palms and flowers, and we met ‘Juicy’ the gardener – full of Antigua stories. House is very well furnished, impeccably clean. Kitchen is the best equipped rental kitchen we ever saw. Beds are comfy and the air conditioning is wonderful in the bedrooms. The road to Turtle Bay is a bit bumpy but it is within easy access of lots of good places to eat in the neighborhood even slightly out of season. Papas by the Sea is a short drive, open every day, Cloggies – with wonderful views over Falmouth Harbor and the special but expensive Catherine’s Café at Pigeon Beach. Wonderful relaxing holiday. Our thanks to Nathan and Clare who look after the house, Daphne the cleaner and Valentino who met us at the airport and is full of advice on beaches and sightseeing. Wonderful island and Villa – cannot wait to come back.

Wonderful house with all the amenities!
What a wonderful stay we had at your lovely home! We got home late last night and we're missing that Antiguan sunshine already. We loved eating all our meals outside, relaxing on the deck, dipping in the pool, listening to the waves, hiking to Rendezvous Beach, and watching the sunset every night. We have a summer cottage on the coast of Maine which we rent out 3-4 weeks each summer. Our feeling is that it's our family cottage which we let others use (not just a rental property) and yours felt the same. What an amazing spot you have! We cooked our own breakfasts and dinners and appreciated your well appointed kitchen. Also thanks so much for the groceries to start -- that was just great. And everything went so smoothly with Titi, Valentino, Nathan and Clare and Daphne -- all just lovely people. We were so impressed with how seamlessly it all came together. Shell Villa is definitely tops of the places we've rented in the past. Hopefully we'll return some day.

so nice to come back to!
We most certainly enjoyed our return visit to Shell Villa. When we arrived last year you had just completed the upgrade of pool deck. We took full advantage of it again, taking in the sun and the view by day and star gazing at night. The air conditioning in the bedrooms was appreciated on a few nights - the units you installed are quiet and just cool the room and do not turn it into a meat locker! The house phone was great for making dinner reservations and the wifi appreciated. It was nice to know we could have watched the Super Bowl on the tv if we had so desired...We also appreciated the books - we left a couple in exchange for a couple we started and didn't get through. Your honour system for kitchen staples is brilliant and it takes the stress out of stocking up on arrival. Finally, the team you have in Antigua are wonderful- helpful and friendly. Well done.
Cheers, until next time,
Irena,

One of the best vacations ever.
The property is even more beautiful than described in the listing. The view from the house is amazing. You go to bed hearing the waves lashing against the shore and you wake up to the sun glistering on the water.
The house was a home away from home. Everything you need to be comfortable. The owners put us in touch with Titi, the car rental company who met us at the airport and guided us to the home. The Management team of Nathan and Clare met us at the home and were available if we needed them. They recommended Jennifer, the caterer, who made a delicious dinner for us on your first night and also did some grocery shopping.
The house is well kept. The pool was clean and well maintained. The whole family, especially my grandson, enjoyed using the pool. We were 5 adults and one child and we did not feel cramped. The house is well designed with all the amenities that are needed to be comfortable.
I will definitely recommend staying at the the Shell Villa. The beaches on the island are fantastic and the restaurants on the beaches provide very good food. No need to leave the beach to go for food.
We will definitely return to stay at Shell Villa

Very well equipped house on the sea
We had a great time at the shell villa. The house is on the sea which is Amazing!
Snorkeling is amazing to but access is not easy, only for adults, as there are many sea urchins on the rocks in front of the house. Many fins at the house if you do not have your own.
We loved the walk to rendez vous bay, very accessible even with 2 kids, 5 and 8. About 1h15 minutes with them from the houses after the horse ranch.
Clare and Nathan were very friendly and helpful. We had some issues with the water when we arrived, very quickly fixed.
The house is very very well equipped, to be honest almost too much for us! I have personally downsized my stuff in the past months and find it easier to keep a clean house with less things... but honestly, very nice to find everything you could look for in a rental house!
Many mosquitoes, we are not big fans of mosquito repellent that have chemicals especially with kids, so we found a natural one locally, worked ok, but as always in the Caribbean you will find mosquitoes for sure.
We really found the people of Antigua being very very nice!
The only bad experience we had was with AVIS. TERRIBLE SERVICE. We had a flat tire and got no help, had to go back to the airport to get a new car, which is about 45 minutes away frm the house. They of course charged us extra when we came back without answering any of my emails.
We went to many beaches, loved Galeon, Rendez vous, Half Moon, Valley Church Bay (water was not good at all for snorkeling on the west part of the island).
As others mentioned the best part of the house is the view, the peacefulness. Road is a bit tough to get there but not too bad, about 10 minutes on the dirt road max.

A beautiful spot in Antigua
This is a a wonderful private villa on the water. The views of the rocky coastline, with an occasional glimpse of smoky Monseratt are beautiful. It has the best equipped kitchen of any house we have ever rented, and my husband and i are very picky about the kitchen. We spent all of our time there in the pool or on the deck area with an occasional nap the the hammock. The house description was accurate and it was very clean. The garden area around the deck and the pool is well maintained and adds to the feeling of the island paradise. The stargazing from the deck at night is exceptional. The owners were very responsive prior to our trip, and the island managers, Clare and Nathan, were always available to answer any questions we had about the house or the island. Valentino, the driver that met us at the airport was great, he drove us to a sailboat cruise at Jolly Harbour called "Catch the Cat" that was a wonderful lunch sail with swimming, snorkeling and relaxing. The boatyards nearby are very interesting to walk around, and there are several good restaurants in the area. The only negative is the bumpy dirt road that you have to travel to get to the villa, but that only makes it that much more private and quiet. It was a relaxing place to spend our first week in Antigua.

Highly Recommended Holiday Destination
What a wonderful place to stay. A secluded villa, with 3 luxurious double bedrooms, well equipped kitchen and dining room and a fantastic vista dining/decking area outside. Plunge pool when too hot (which is often on this paradise island), outside shower and the Caribbean lapping onto the garden - what more could you want! 10 minutes drive to local amenities, restaurants, bars and attractions such as English Harbour and Nelson's Dockyard. Well maintained by the owners with a housekeeper and gardener on site. I would thoroughly recommend this holiday destination to anyone wanting to visit Antigua - what a find.

Perfect Family Vacation at Shell Villa on Antigua
We had the most wonderful vacation in your perfect Shell Villa!! From the beginning to the end of our trip, everything was heavenly! A large part of the success was due to your expert organization! Valentino met us at the airport; I was with him, with our three car caravan following, as we embarked on our first thrilling ride to Shell Villa. (By the end of the week we all felt like accomplished drivers, as we mastered the road to the house and driving on the "wrong side" of the road!) The house was as charming as we had hoped!! ...And your suggestion of having Patsy prepare our first night's meal was a perfect start. Helen and Kevin were so warm and helpful; we loved them, as well as Daphne and Juicy!! (Juicy even made a "lobster spear" for my son to use while snorkelling!) What an amazing group of people you have taking care of your home! Our children surprised us with a special catered dinner by Ruthie on Thursday night. She to was awesome~a real gourmet chef. (We put the little ones to bed and she served all of us an amazing candlelight multi-course dinner on your wonderful deck under a full moon!) We would begin each day just "hanging out" around the house...snorkeling, playing in the pool with the kids, looking for treasures on the rocky beach. Then after naps and lunch our caravan would head out for the afternoon to explore the island and its many gorgeous beaches, but we were always eager to head back to "our comfy cottage" which really had everything we wanted.
Well, I could go on and on about Shell Villa and all of your special touches, which made our stay so fabulous. You really have done a great job of thinking of everything! We have rented many vacation houses and our experience at Shell Villa is now at the top! You found the best spot on the island and I am so glad I found you!!
Thank you for all of your attention and helpful emails!! Planning a vacation for six adults and three little ones can be a challenge, but you made it fun and easy. Maybe we will bump into you sometime, since we are almost neighbors in the States! :):) In the meantime, we are all dreaming of another vacation in your little spot of paradise!

Quiet Corner!
We just returned from a visit to Antigua and an enjoyable stay at Shell Villa. This is a lovely home in a very quiet area. We were greeted by Valentino who took us to the store and then guided us to Shell Villa. When we arrived, Helen was there and showed us all the features of the home and gave us some island visiting tips. The best part of Shell Villa is the deck where we sat every morning and every evening to watch the sailboats go by and to enjoy the sunsets. The kitchen is well stocked with cooking utensils and is was great that when we arrived there were already eggs, juice, bread and fresh fruit waiting for us. If you are looking for privacy and some lovely "down" time, you will find it at Shell Villa.

Fabulous Holiday at Shell villa
Special in every way. We went with our two year old toddler and enjoyed the sparkling, refreshing pool every day along with the beautiful family friendly beaches a short drive away. The owners are wonderfully kind and the house is cared after well by professional team on the Island. The sunsets each night were incredible and we sat armchair surfing, watching the waves and their surfers most evenings until the moon came up. The kitchen is well equipt with cooking essentials and more, dishwasher and an amazing gas BBQ, which was used much. This place wont disappoint. Many thanks.

Shell Villa as a wedding venue
During August 2014 my then Fiancée and I stayed at Shell Villa for two weeks during which time we were married at the villa itself.
From the time of our arrival at the airport, being greeted by our driver and guide, to the very last day when our wonderful housekeeper helped us with our luggage, nothing was too much trouble for any member of the Shell Villa 'team'.
The property was immaculately presented, with a few surprise extras in the kitchen department. Our introduction was friendly, informative and very supportive. That is how it went for the next two weeks. A friendly, supportive team who were always available at the end of the phone but who never got in the way.
The location is as special as the villa itself. The villa, the sea, the grounds and surrounds made a perfect backdrop to the wedding. Over the whole two weeks we enjoyed and relaxed so much that a return visit is a must. The villa gets a top star rating in our books.
Two very happy people.

Beautiful and Private
My wife and I spent 9 days at Shell Villa. The privacy was awesome and the house well kept. We have been to a number of places in the Caribbean and Shell Villa is one of the best we have experienced (and the people of Antigua are some of the friendliest). Helen and Kevin (the property managers) did a great job of keeping up on things and Valentino (taxi cab driver), Juicy (gardener), and Daphne (house cleaner) were great too.
Thanks for letting us stay there. We are already thinking about the possibility of a return visit for next June!

We're a family of 5, with 3 young children and were blown away by the location and the island of Antigua.
The property is perfect for those looking for seclusion and a bit of peace and quiet and is well looked after and maintained by Helen and the team.
Daphne was a delight and we enjoyed her weekly cleaning visits, which were always very thorough and entertaining.
3 weeks away and we could have stayed longer!

Wonderful week in Shell Villa and Antigua
We returned on 6/8/13 after a great stay at Shell Villa and enjoying many of Antigua's offerings. I am not going to repeat all of the superlatives regarding the villa, its outdoor amenities and its location that were shared by other reviewers, as we found them all to be true. As owners of a VRBO rental ourselves, I think it may be helpful to focus on some of the more practical aspects of the villa and the island.
I would like to repeat, though, the positives of the staff that manage and maintain the villa and grounds. We found all of them to be quite pleasant, helpful and professional. As there were six of us, we had rented a minivan, but our two young adult kids and theiir two guests rode with Valentino from the airport and enjoyed his commentary on the island very much.
The property managers, Helen and Kevin, were extremely friendly, with many tips on the area. And as is bound to happen eventually with any home, an appliance decided to act up on our first day there, and they had it addressed very quickly, which we appreciated.
The villa itself is well designed to take advantage of the island breezes, especially being so close to the water. There are mutilple windows and doors that can be opened capture those breezes and the wonderful views, but also have screening so that they can be closed at night to ward off mosquitoes but still allow air circulation. The large living area and bedrooms all have ceiling fans, and even in June, the breezes and fans combined to make sleeping quite comfy. Based on charts of average temperatures, Antigua seems to stay a bit cooler in the summer than several other islands we have visited,
One of the many advantages of the home is the kitchen, which is not only well equipped, but good sized as well, allowing several cooks to work at once, as we did several evenings. We found the villa to be well equipped throughtout with things like flashlights, extra batteries, binoculars, games, bug spray, etc.Outdoor lighting is plentiful for the evenings.
We visited several beaches and found some good snorkeling at Pigeon Beach (north end) and Long Bay beach (south end). We thought Valley Church beach was the most beautiful the four we visited. The young adults did the zip line tour on Fig Tree Drive and really enjoyed it.
We had no problems with the minivan and the roads, including the road down to the villa. We found the Antiguan roads in general to be much better than roads in Jamaica where we also drove a minivan.

Oceanside ... beautiful views
Waking up to surf early in AM ... long runs to Rendezvous Beach via mountain trail and steep roads at 7AM before the heat of the day, great work-out! ... this pristine beach nearby, reached in 12-15min by AWD vehicle (we rented Toyota Rav4), was often without anyone else on expansive beach ... other beaches with easier access ... snorkeling outside the house ... friendly Antiguan people ... the privacy is great. Walked some of the local peaks above the house, seeing orchids, agave, aloe, acacias and other flora + fauna (saw several Mongooses) ... interesting island to learn ecology from .. highly recommend. Liked it significantly better than the resorts, which we visited, finding this better way to get to know the island and the people. Great owners and weekly on-site manager couple to assist with house (although 9 days went unventfully without need of help). Wireless was great, accomodating a laptop, two iPads, and a few iPhones. Driving is right-side-of-road like UK ... got used to, initially took it quite slow ... drivers locally appear understanding and respectful of tourist presence. Interestingly food is more expensive than in USA ... even local fruit/vegetables ... however, not prohibitive ... empathize with local inhabitants, who don't appear distressed poor but nonetheless not affluent, in general. People appear very interested in education for their children, with multiple schools troughout ... also, people quite religious, with abundant churches. Indigenous people are approx. 90% descendants from African slaves brought over to work the sugar cane plantations ... no commercial plantations are currently operating. Resorts have mostly British visitors, as Antigua former British colony (Indepedence Antigua/Barbuda 1981) ... Americans approx. 30% of visitors. Would go back again ... house is truly a gem.
