I had a good stay at Generator Berlin Mitte overall. The hostel has a great location and a fantastic social atmosphere, making it a good option for travellers who want to explore Berlin and meet other people. However, there were a few things I didn't particularly like and believe could be improved.
1. Excellent location
The location was excellent, with the train station and tram stops just a few steps away. It was very convenient for getting around Berlin and exploring different parts of the city without wasting time on transportation.
2. Fantastic atmosphere and social vibe
One of the best things about this hostel was its overall atmosphere. The vibe was friendly, lively, and social, making it a great place to meet other travellers and enjoy the hostel experience. The environment felt welcoming, especially for people travelling solo.
1. No kitchen or fridge for guests
One thing I didn't particularly like was the lack of a kitchen and fridge. This meant there was no proper place to store my own food. For budget travellers who prefer to buy groceries and keep some food for later, this is quite inconvenient. Having even a basic shared kitchen or fridge would make the hostel much more practical.
2. No free luggage storage for early arrivals
Another downside was the lack of a dedicated space to store luggage if you arrive before check-in, which starts at 3:00 PM. Instead, you have to pay a few euros to rent a locker. Many other hostels provide a designated luggage storage area for early arrivals, so I found this a little disappointing. It would be much more convenient if guests could leave their suitcases safely without having to pay an additional fee.
3. Uncomfortable experience with credit card details
Something else that made me uncomfortable was the way my bank card details were handled during check-in. The staff member took my credit card and saved its details, which I wasn't comfortable with, as I had never experienced this at other hostels before.
What made the situation even stranger was that another guest who checked in at approximately the same time was not asked to provide his bank card details. This inconsistency left me wondering why the procedure was different for different guests. I would have appreciated a clear explanation of why the details were needed and how they would be stored and protected.
Overall, Generator Berlin Mitte was a good hostel with an excellent location and a fantastic social atmosphere. These were the highlights of my stay, and I think the hostel is worth considering if you want to meet fellow travellers and have convenient access to public transportation.
However, the lack of a kitchen and fridge, the additional cost of luggage storage before check-in, and the lack of clarity around the handling of credit card details were drawbacks for me.
