Kiez Hostel Berlin

The staff are mostly very down to earth and mature. The facilities are comprehensive. The atmosphere of the communal area is nice.

One morning we had a very uncomfortable interaction with the staff. He accused us of breaking something - the handrail at the top of the ladder to the loft bed - which we noticed was faulty as soon as we arrived. We simply assumed the staff would have checked that before our arrival (this would be ideal, considering it’s a safety hazard) and so we didn’t say anything and just made sure to be careful so we didn’t fall. I guess we didn’t realise it’s our responsibility to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the accommodation. Regardless, this handrail should be able to bear the weight of anybody who needs to use it to access the bed. It is awfully exclusive, unsafe, and bad design if it breaks under a person’s weight. He also claimed the room was ‘really messy’ because some lining from my boots had fallen onto the ground the night before. I would have preferred not to leave this of course but I had no means of cleaning it and I figured the floor should be cleaned anyway after a four night stay. He tried to say that it was ash. Neither of us smoke. There were also previous guests dirty socks left in the hammock. The way this man spoke to me was clearly driven by bad faith assumptions - that were wrong and ill-considered - about us as guests who did our best to be respectful. He was accusatory and lost his temper and I felt uncomfortable and unsafe for the rest of our time there. I think a person who assumes the worst of guests and cannot control their temper should not be managing people’s living and sleeping situations.

Very well managed hostel. Friendly and helpful staff. Well equipped kitchen with various condiments. Complementary amenities provided for in ladies' bathroom. Overall chill vibe of the hostel.

Having to make up own bed upon arrival.

Everything was acceptable, but crowded. Small shared spaces, showers, kitchen etc. nice staff, fair prices, clean showers and toilets.

The audience was rough and loud. Not the hostel’s fault but passed out guests on the sofas (of which there were only two) or loud speaking at the only table, while people in the dorm were drinking alcohol and showing inconsiderate behavior in terms of noise and light. Again this is problematic to blame the hostel, but some policing is sometimes required to ensure a better experience.
