⚓Capt Nathaniel Clarke Historic Homestead🤵Weddings👰Reunions❤Magnificent Yard🐕
About this house rental
Nestled in Old Saybrook, this attractive house for $735 per night is a fantastic option for your next vacation. Built in 1795 by Captain Nathaniel Clarke (a descendant of Capt. Thomas Clarke. The Nathaniel Clarke Homestead is steeped in maritime history and lore. This is a five bedroom, 2 bathroom home with a working fireplace and a magnificent front and backyard that hosts 👰weddings🤵 family and friends reunions and venues . The home sleeps up to 8 people and is ideal for vacations, weddings, corporate retreats or reunions. The property is near to beaches, nice restaurants, casinos and attractions. The greenhouse/garden was featured on HGTV and served as a filming location for the awarded 2012 Indie film "The Word". Need additional bedrooms? A nearby cottage can be rented with a combined discount. The Nathaniel Clarke Homestead remains an elegant emissary from our old times of colonies.. Giant sugar maple trees shade the long back lawn of the property, on the banks of the Oyster River and tidal marshlands. The front yard is set back from the Boston Post Road. On the inside, the house affords modern amenities while retaining the old world charm and quirks of an historic New England Homestead. Steeped in history and maritime mystery, the house is a classic that hearkens back to the time of pilgrims and yeomen who built New England from its pristine wilderness and made America the land of the free, and the home of the brave. It also features a large back and front yard, with enchanting flowerbeds and barns- a historic jelly shed, and a corn crib. These out-buildings enhance the atmosphere and the privacy of the property, bordering it into 2 separate sections, one of which is technically off-limits to guests with a separate access, without interference. Their usage is reserved by the owners. The parking is provided for 5 cars, even though it can host more. If more spaces are needed, please consult us as the owners may reserve a spot for their own usage, from time to time. The back yard features a grouping of Adirondack chairs, an outdoor grill area, picnic area, and a swing, hanging from a huge old maple tree. Read, enjoy a nice sunbath, or push your children on the swing. The property is of course an ideal place for retreats and large parties such as weddings and other ceremonies, for which first class catering can be organized at a very affordable cost. The greenhouse is another one-of-a-kind feature and a particularly pleasant place to sit and enjoy the view of the garden, surrounded by huge maples, providing a nice shade during the summer time. The property was featured by the HGTV Design channel and thereafter was selected for the shooting of the film "The Word", 2013 WINNER of BEST DRAMATIC FEATURE (Manhattan Film Festival) and 2013 WINNER – SILVER ACE AWARD (Las Vegas Film Festival). One of the primary scenes of the film that was filmed in the greenhouse. The owners have given a particular attention to the quality of the linen and to the bedding to provide you with a very comfortable night sleep. The cleaning is handled by a crew of professional housekeepers. The Fall season is spectacular in new England. Visiting the small towns of Old Lyme, Mystic, Essex, Chester, and their surrounding forests, or driving along the Connecticut River will create memories that last a lifetime. Old Saybrook is the hometown of many celebrities, and more particularly of famous actress Katherine Hepburn, whose mansion is now a landmark. Because it is located on the Long Island Sound, in Summer, Old Saybrook is well-known for its different sandy beaches.Harvey's Beach and Town Beach are available for public use, both providing clean facilities with very small crowds. Need a break from the beach ? Stop to dine at some fine restaurants nearby. Travel just a little further and visit Mystic Aquarium, Mystic Seaport, take a ride with your kids across the countryside, see Beautiful New England the old-fashioned way on the Essex Historic steam train, enjoy a cruise on the Connecticut River or enjoy an evening at the Mohegan Casino. Peddle along the ocean side at sunset, head to the shops along Main Street or take a ten-minute drive to the shopping large outlets in Westbrook and Clinton. We really enjoyed this historic home, the house is furnished in a tasteful eclectic style and is very comfortable, the access to beach is convenient and the homeowner has a really nice collection of books. It was an easy drive to Mystic Seaport and we had so much fun visiting local museums. Our host was very welcoming and accommodating.

Once we determined a date we were done with the reunion early in the first week. I visited New Hampshire for the middle weekend and enjoyed vacation by myself for the balance of my stay.

The house was great, comfy beds, cute decor, had everything we needed - towels, blankets, utensils, enough rooms for quiet time and a huge living room for games and fun!

From our 2 month old to 80 year old family members, Yvette's magnificent and historic homestead was a wonderful setting for us. Beginning with her very engaged and helpful welcome to her thoughtful provision of kitchen, bath and beach amenities, comfortable beds, welcoming dining and living areas, and the beauty and serenity of her yard and gardens, we felt so at home. She is a host who attends to details in caring for her home and guests. A deep bow to Yvette for everything!

This home was very clean. There is a short walk to the local McDonald's. About a 10 minute ride to Saybrook inn, Stop & Shop, the railroad station, the diner, and so much more. The yard was large and included two full-size picnic tables, as well as a fire pit with hot chairs around it, and supplied firewood, the bedrooms, each had an air conditioning unit in the window and we're fairly comfortable. There were plenty of towels, dishes, pots and pans, and serving pieces if you are having a large group of people gather there. There is a charming garden room off of the living room area that was just beautiful . Although the house was not centrally air-conditioned, there are window air conditioners in each of the bedrooms.
There were steep stairs going up to the second floor, ( this is an antique home after all) which would not have been suitable for people with a disability, however, a child gate was provided.
The bathrooms were spacious and clean and there was plenty of hot water.
A large screen TV in the Living Room and the Internet provided worked very well.
I would definitely choose to stay at this lovely property again in the future.

If you're looking for a great coastal New England weekend getaway, look no further. A group of four of us headed to Old Saybook over a gorgeous fall weekend. The Captain Nathaniel Clarke house is a cool historic house (and has a switchback stairway, too) on the equally historic Boston Post Road. Though it's a main road in town, we had no street noise. The house was spotless and had all the conveniences, including a very new washer/dryer pair. We took advantage of the firepit for our two cool fall evenings, and there was plenty of cordwood and kindling to keep it going. Along with the amenities in-house, there's a Starbucks, a good wine/liquor store, and very well-stocked natural foods market, all in walking distance. And whatever you do, DO NOT miss going to The Pursuit Of Pastry ( also, in walking distance offering sticky buns I'm still dreaming about) and if you love Italian, about a mile down Boston Post Road is Alforno--really good, reasonably priced, and absolutely packed on a Saturday night. We had a wonderful time together and this property helped make it so.

My family and I stayed in this historic, beautiful house for 5 days and it was paradise. The house is great- It has all of the New England charm, all the amenities you could need, and very comfortable. Minutes from the beach, restaurants, shops etc. The host was responsive (within minutes) and was extremely helpful/accommodating.
It really was the perfect place for us to enjoy our vacation. We are already planning to return as soon as we can. Thanks again for everything!!

I love historic properties, and this house is the quintessential New England farmhouse with wide plank wood floors and a very cozy feel. There are plenty of beds for a large group - 9 in total. The outside space is great for family gatherings. There are two large white picnic tables with umbrellas, a grill, and 8 Adirondack chairs around a fire pit. Wood is provided. There are also beach toys and chairs for the kids. Harvey's beach is right down the road, and the host provides parking passes. Go there at low tide for a unique beach experience. Hammonesset state park beach is also nearby. We really enjyed our stay and would stay again!

What a charming house with so much character! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the house - we were 3 families with young children all of whole loved the spacious backyard! Yvette was so easy to work with and made herself readily available to us throughout our entire stay. The location was perfect - we loved brining our children to Harvey’s beach especially which was so close. The house was also close to a grocery store, shopping, and a variety of dining options. The house was clean, the beds were comfortable, and lots of space for the adults to gather after the children were asleep. Thank you for a great stay, we will be back!

Yvette was such a great host and really easy to communicate with!
The house was so charming and everything we could have hoped for. There were more than enough beds and the house was so deceiving it just kept going and going and going. Great places and spaces to hang around, relax and chat- whether it was inside or outside by the fire!
The location was perfect- close enough to the beach as well as close enough to the Water’s Edge where we were able to relax as well!
Everyone was raving and couldn’t stop talking about the history, beauty and charm of this house. A memorable stay for sure and something we hope to make a yearly tradition.
Thanks again, Yvette!

I came with my wife, 2 kids (5yo and 2yo) and our dog. We immediately felt at home. Very cozy, clean, and relaxing surrounding. Everything was clean and as described. We enjoyed the snow/winter side, and I’m sure that during the summer it is as lovely as during the winter. I love the location. 5 min from a shopping center for anything you need. We went to a day short/kids friendly hiking and another day to a nearby aquarium. Every other minute was spent in this lovely house and our family had a lot of indoor quality time by the fireplace. We will definitely visit again during the summer.

We had great family visit with our daughters and their families! The fire pit was our favorite hangout during the cool evenings, and everyone enjoyed large backyard! It’s special spot close to many beaches, and we loved the organic market right down road! Great escape for weekend with family!

This is a great rambling house that works well for large groups. We were in the area for a wedding and our extended family all stayed here. Lots of bedrooms and a large living room with comfy chairs. There was a lovely porch which were not able to enjoy since we spent much of our time away from the house. There was well stocked kitchen and we made use of it for breakfast. The outside area was also quite pretty
I would not hesitate to recommend this home

My family and me were very pleased with this house. The house was able to accommodate our group of 12 very comfortably. The weather cooperated so we were able to take advantage of the outdoor amenities, having dinner by the fire pit. With the beach only minutes away, the location was perfect. We would definitely rent this house again. Thank you Yvette for offering this house for rent and providing an intimate setting for our family reunion.

My wife, Maria, and I had our dream wedding at this beautiful home. This house is full of amazing energy and charm. Yvette was an absolute pleasure to work with. We had always dreamt of having a shabby chic, intimate country themed wedding. This house was the perfect place to make our dream wedding become a reality. What made our wedding so unique was not only the charm and character of the house and property, but the fact that we were able to have several nights with our closest friends and family to celebrate our love. The house comfortably slept our entire bridal party. We will cherish the memories that we created during our stay for the rest of our lives. Our story started here and we could not be more grateful.

Dear Yvette,
Thank you for a truly wonderful stay at the Nathaniel Clarke House in Old Saybrook! We brought close friends from our wedding party (we were married one week prior to our stay) as a late summer get together and thank you. While the pictures of the house are beautiful, we were blown away when we arrived at the house to see it in person. The house is-stunning! It's charming, yet luxurious, homey and artfully decorated. I loved all the personal touches in this home, it has wonderful energy. The kitchen, appliances, dish wear e.t.c. and outdoor grill are wonderful for cooking for a group. All in all it was the perfect place for a getaway, and completely outshined our expectations:)
