Disappointing booking experience from overbooking the villa with stranger and how issue was handled
In general, it is a nice and spacious villa, nicely furnished, with plenty of games, books, etc. It has a very homely feel, almost like the old days when Airbnb properties were often privately owned and rented out by the owners for weekends when they were away.
**Overbooking in the villa with strangers -> Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing experience with the booking and the way the overbooking issue was handled.**
We booked the entire villa exclusively for our group. However, when we arrived in the late afternoon, we were surprised to find that another foreign couple had already checked in and was staying in the house. We had booked the whole villa for ourselves and had not been informed in advance that anyone else would be staying there. As it was already late in the afternoon, we decided not to make the situation even more difficult for the couple and allowed them to stay. We contacted the owner and requested appropriate compensation. The owner explained that the issue might have been caused by a system/overbooking error on Holidu's side and told us that Holidu would contact us regarding a refund or compensation.
Unfortunately, the situation became even more surprising later that night. When we returned from dinner, we found another stranger had checked into the villa. It was already around midnight, and given the remote location, there was realistically no possibility for anyone to find alternative accommodation at that time. As a result, we simply had to spend the night in a villa that we had booked exclusively for our group, together with two completely unknown guests who were not supposed to be there.
When requesting compensation/refund and were told by the owner that Holidu would contact us. However, after two months without any contact or refund, we eventually contacted Booking.com customer service ourselves. Unfortunately, the case was closed without compensation, despite obvious breach of what we had booked. When trying to get compensation directly from owner in good faith (even partial compensation), he refused and referred to Holidu again.
