A group holiday that turned into a stressful experience due to suspected bed bugs
The property had a well-equipped kitchen and plenty of bathrooms for almost every room. It has beautiful views from the front of the house.
The property has an insect issue, potentially bed bugs. After spending two nights there, we woke up on the first day and some of us had bite marks from insects. It was not a very serious outbreak at that point, but a few people had a small number of bites.
On the second day, I personally slept on the couch in the living room and woke up with my head and shoulder area itching like crazy. That same evening, we all spent time in the living room watching England's game, and every single one of us started getting bites across our bodies.
The next day (the day of checkout), we woke up covered in marks from what appeared to be serious insect bites. Those who spent the evening in the living room watching the game were affected much more severely than the others.
I've contacted Booking.com to report the issue and provided photos of numerous bites from different people. They tried to contact the property, but to this day the property has not responded to Booking.com. I've also personally contacted them, provided all the photos of the bites, as well as pictures showing the damp and mould we experienced in the property. Although their initial response was that they apologised and would review the case, a week later there was still no response. When I called them back, they said they would do nothing because I didn't contact them during our stay.
I explained that the issue happened the night before we checked out and that I contacted them the day after I returned home, but with no success. After having the rudest conversation with a person called "Dion" from Sykes Cottages (who apparently manage the property), he repeatedly spoke over me and insisted there was nothing they could do because I hadn't contacted them on the same day.
This property is a health and safety hazard, and I would avoid it at all costs. It's better to pay a bit extra or drive further than deal with the bed bug problem we experienced.
