This property is in a location where you can see the Whale Tale, the Sunrise at 9 o'clock, and the Sunset to 3 o'clock. The swimming pool is all under the shade in the afternoon and you don't need any sunscreen for the whole afternoon! We enjoyed watching monkeys, sloths, blue morpho butterflies, coatis, geckoes, and various birds including toucans. The onsite caretaker helped us identify the sloths, otherwise, there's no way we can find them on top of the trees hiding!
We cooked ourselves most of the time but thoroughly enjoyed high-quality tuna at Mosaic Wine and Sushi Bar, and a local seafood restaurant around Quepos after a guided tour at Manuel Antonio. Make sure you get guided tours all the time - that's the way you find the hidden animals.
We went down further to the Osa Peninsula. Looking back, we probably would do Osa first via SJO-PJM, then rent a car at PJM National, and drive back to explore the Dominical/Uvita/Quepos area while staying at John's place afterward as the place is so relaxing!

My husband and I recently had the privilege to stay at Flying Toucans for a little over two weeks. The house is tucked back away from the highway and is every bit as fabulous as you think it is. Each morning we were greeted with a beautiful sunrise over the mountains and complete tranquility. Enjoying morning coffee while watching the capuchin monkeys, hummingbirds, and other wildlife move about is indescribable. The house is situated between Domincal and Uvita, both of which are great towns to go and explore. The surrounding parks, waterfalls, and scenery shouldn't be missed either - go and explore! Don't be scared of the drive from San Jose, this house is worth every mile and every truck that you may get stuck behind, haha. Everyone is incredibly kind, the excursions are worth the money, and the memories that you make will be everlasting. Stop searching and book this house!

I traveled with a couple friends, all three of us ladies are 60 plus years of age. Costa Rica was on our bucket list. Staying at The Flying Toucans was probably the best location we could’ve picked with breathtaking views, of the ocean and mountains, tropical gardens, monkeys, Coatis (white nosed costa raccoons), toucans and macaws. We were there 10 days and every day was a new adventure watching the wildlife and swimming in the amazing pool! A five minute walk leads to a wonderful restaurant with fabulous food and coconut flan (a must try). We took a half day ATV tour to a coffee plantation at highest point and saw beautiful waterfalls. I highly recommend this excursion! Everything about our trip and accommodations was wonderful. Thanks John for sharing your spectacular home!! We miss it already.

Someone below stated not to bother reading the rest of the reviews and I'll have to agree! The house is well appointed, the beds were comfortable, the view is phenomenal, the pool was refreshing, and the wildlife around the home was very best part of it all! We saw tons of white faced and howler monkeys, several coatis and toucans almost daily. We barely left the house at all! Just book it, you won't regret it!

Absolutely loved it!!!! From the morning wake up call of the Howler Monkeys to the aerial acrobats of the white faced monkeys. You can stay in this one place and see it all. Coatis, raccoons, agoutis, rust tailed hummingbirds, toucans, red legged grasshopper and several Jesus Christ lizards……. Iguanas. Location was ideal for a short trip to a grocery for fresh fruit or a day trip to one of the many waterfalls of the area. Oh, and the beautiful flowers that are all around. We are already talking about our next trip to FT……

Myself and my two sons (10 and 13) had a wonderful stay in Costa Rica at the Flying Tucans. I can't say enough about the beauty of this house and its surrounding jungle. We saw so many animals (monkeys, toucans, coati, lizards and parrots) on a daily basis. They were all so close and it was spectacular. The house it's self was exactly as the post stated and was in excellent shape. I enjoyed cooking all of our meals in the kitchen. The Gas grill is a bit old but was usable and worked just fine for the stakes and burgers I cooked. My kids and I absolutely LOVED the pool! It was clean and so much fun to play in, relax and watch a sun set from.
The owners were fantastic. John sent us info on the place prior to our departure and even spoke with me on the phone. He was a great resource for us for the area and was very helpful!
I highly recommend this house for any one wanting a true Tico experience!

Words cannot describe how special this house is! It truly is a slice of heaven and I cannot recommend it enough! All of the prior reviews are right on… the view is absolutely incredible! Waking up each morning to the sound of the howler monkeys and birds singing, drinking coffee on the patio while gazing out to the impeccable view, being entertained by the howler monkeys everyday at 7am and 4pm (they were very consistent!!), chilling in the pool while watching a sloth swing from the tree, falling asleep at night to the sound of the waves crashing, each day was simply magical! The house was very clean, had everything we needed, was very private, and the owners were fantastic communicators! My favorite part… there are animals everywhere you look - it’s unreal to see so many animals right in your own back yard (we saw a sloth 3 different times, a family of howler monkeys, white faced monkeys, agouti, coati, toucans, lots of parrots, a kinkajou, tons of birds, and crabs galore)!
The location is perfect! Right between Dominical and Uvita (small/chill towns) so you have lots of options for beaches and restaurants just a few minutes away! Don’t stress about the trip from the airport - it’s an easy trip with beautiful scenery (and the house is well worth the drive). If you are looking for an incredible Costa Rica experience… book this house!

This was our second trip to Costa Rica. The house is wonderful! It's clean and you feel like one with nature. Things we loved: the views, the sunrise, the abundant flowers and plants, our privacy, the morning pool, the house layout and amenities, the location between Dominical and Uvita, the AC for bedrooms, and lastly seeing the locals (animals) visit regularly. Things that were not so great and can't control: the drive from San Jose airport, the hot afternoon pool and the distant road noise. Overall we had a fantastic stay and spent most our time at the house, we felt we were staying at our own private resort. Also a big thank you to John, the home owner who stayed in contact at all times.

Its really exactly like all the other reviews say, it's wonderful. We stayed for almost 2 weeks and the time flew by. One of the best vacation rental decisions we've made to date, and we've staying in a LOT of rental houses!

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at Flying Toucans this week, and it was everything we imagined it to be and more. It was spotlessly clean upon arrival, well-appointed, and the amount of wildlife and the view (the VIEW!!!) we woke up to every morning took our breath away. In fact, almost all of the wildlife we saw during our trip was at FT. Large families of monkeys swinging in the trees, birds of all types and colors, abundant butterflies, frequent visits from the coati, multiple lizards, and best of all, a momma sloth carrying her baby swinging in the trees right outside the laundry room door! The open-air design (even the shower!) allows you to stay fully immersed in your surroundings. Afternoons spent lounging in the best pool on the planet were the highlight of the trip. We could have stayed in the pool the entire time and been happy, but we also enjoyed quick and easy access to both Uvita and Dominical where we explored numerous beautiful beaches, waterfalls, and delicious restaurants. We already miss everything about FT. John and Mary were excellent hosts and extremely helpful, informative, and responsive - always happy to help in any way. You simply cannot go wrong staying at Flying Toucans!

Flying Toucans is absolute paradise—we had the most wonderful time! The amount of wildlife you can see while just chilling in the outdoor living room is astounding! Daily, we had the pleasure of watching toucans, monkeys, coati, lizards, and countless birds. The pool is sublime and the view of the ocean and mountains is incredible. The whole property is so private and well cared for, we really felt it was our own little world.
Flying Toucans’ location between Dominical and Uvita is perfect for experiencing all the great food both towns have to offer. We are a family of two vegetarians and a vegan, and we had a surprising amount of delicious choices.
John and Mary were wonderful hosts. They were always available if we had questions or needed anything. You could tell they had put a lot of care into building the home and maintains it. And, the kitchen was well stocked for cooking.
We truly loved everything about our stay at Flying Toucans and will certainly be back!

Property is absolutely gorgeous. Sunrises and sunsets, infinity pool, toucans, sloths and monkeys. What else could you ask for. John, the owner was exceptional. He kept in contact with us the whole week to ensure we had everything we needed. We will definitely be back!

We’re on our way back to the states after spending a week at Flying Toucans and we loved it. This was our first trip to Costa Rica and we couldn’t have picked a better place. We especially loved being able to see and hear so much wildlife around us 24/7. We did a jungle tour one of the days and it made me appreciate FT even more because I was able to recognize all the trees that the animals love right in front of us. We didn’t see the sloth but we saw plenty of toucans (including 4 baby ones), monkeys, lizards, a small crab, a couple raccoons passing by, squirrels, hummingbirds, etc. You really don’t even need to leave to enjoy your stay. The pool is very refreshing and I couldn’t get over the views from all angles. Oh and the shower… such a cool experience because you can open up the wooden windows and literally see and hear the monkeys and birds all around. I can’t wait to come back again and I’d recommend FT to anyone looking to experience something different and outside of the city.
Couple things to note: The drive there and back to San Jose is a journey in itself but I didn’t mind it the drive at all. The internet was a little slow so don’t bring your work with you. It forced me to put my work aside in a good way so that I could enjoy our stay even more. Highly recommend.

The Flying Toucans house is something special. I spent a week at Johns house with my wife, parents and our 1 and half year old son and it was a trip we’ll continue to talk about. Conveniently located 10 minutes south of Dominical and 10 minutes north of Uvita, it puts you in the perfect location to explore both towns and the surrounding areas. The house was extremely clean and well kept, the downstairs indoor/outdoor living space lets you enjoy the Costa Rica climate and feel connected to the surrounding landscape and manicured gardens and yard. The outdoor staircase leads you two large master bedrooms, each with their own AC and private bathroom. The best part about Flying Toucans is the incredible view, It’s something that you almost can’t put into words, and after spending close to 3-months exploring various parts of Costa Rica I can confidently say the view from Flying Toucans is the best we’ve seen. John checked in with us a few times before our arrival and also on our second day there, he has a lot of great recommendations on things to do around the area, or you can just relax in the crystal clear infinity pool while taking in the amazing views. Thank you John for creating this little piece of paradise in Costa Rica!

Every day felt like waking in the Garden of Eden! The property is meticulously manicured. The house is gorgeous and spotless. And, of course the pool with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean! We highly enjoyed our time in the so very comfortable and peaceful outdoor living area. Our seven night stay was not nearly enough. Thank you John and Mary for sharing your home with us. This one of a kind property has wildlife everywhere. While sitting on the front patio viewing the Pacific Ocean waves crashing on the shore, we had coatimindis, raccoons, white faced monkeys, howler monkeys, toucans, all come for a visit. The wildlife was spectacular, and it was frequent. The view from the pool is what dreams are made of. This is a special place!

Flying Toucans was a wonderful place for my grandson Preston and I to stay for the week.
It is located on a narrow ridge with otherworldly views of the Pacific and mountains both towards the south and the west. There are not too many villas that are surrounded by ocean on two sides.
I am retired now, but, designed houses for thirty-seven years. It is rare to find a house so well-situated on its property.
The layout of the rooms works exceptionally well. The open-air living and dining areas off the kitchen and abutting the pool was a wonderful place to relax.!
Preston & I took the hike John suggested down the deserted Puertocito Beach. It was quite a worthwhile adventure; while John was a pleasure to work with.
The location of the villa between Dominical and Uvita is convenient to so many restaurants and activities.. We went ATV'ing up in the mountains to see the almost three hundred foot Santa Lucia waterfall, another memorable experience.
Overall, this was a wonderful stay. I highly recommend Flying Toucans to anyone considering visiting the Ballena Coast.

Private, beautiful, brimming with wildlife, safe, and close to all the attractions that Dominical and Uvita have to offer!
We absolutely LOVED our stay here. We were hoping to see a little bit of wildlife and were absolutely delighted with the abundance of fauna in our own private yard. We were visited daily by howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, coati, Tucans, paca, a variety of geckos and lizards and a very persistent raccoon!
Also, this home is beautifully situated between Dominical and Uvita where we were thrilled with the opportunity for guided tours on land, sea and even air (zip lining through the canopy was an amazing adventure).
Our host, John, was easy to reach and very responsive to all questions and requests.
We highly recommend this beautiful spot!

Great Stay!!
My husband, myself and our 6 year old twin girls stayed here and all I can say is WOW!! The house is absolutely amazing and the girls could have just stayed in the pool the entire trip and been happy! The house was clean, had everything we needed (including cute coconut drinks in the fridge when we arrived!) and was just as the directions stated. Each morning was amazing watching the animals (and there were alot of wildlife to view!) and having coffee overlooking the water. Home owner was wonderful, very helpful and gave great recommendations for restaurants in the area.
I could not say enough good things about this home and would gladly return!!

The location is fantastic, right between Uvita and Dominical, with amazing views of the ocean and the "whales tail". We were visited daily by wildlife including toucans and the white faced monkeys. The house is maintained in great condition and is well stocked.

Pure Heaven
There is not enough characters space to describe the perfection of our vacation at Flying Toucans!!! Ultimate beauty... relaxation and nature!!!Views are breathtaking and the pool is perfectly placed for views and relaxation. The monkeys...sloth ...hummingbirds...gosh there is no need to leave the property!! The private beach and waterfall is well worth the hike!! We took a truck and got lost in the jungle but found paradise at the end!!! You just can’t go wrong staying here!!! Melanie the massage therapist was awesome!!! John was such a great host!!! Always responsive. We will be back!!!!

Our stay at Flying Toucans was so enjoyable. And yes, the view looking over the infinity pool would be hard to match, it's that beautiful. The landscaping also maximizes the natural rain forest growth.The outdoor living area was an especially pleasing aspect of the property and allowed for a front row seat to enjoy visits from the monkey families, the coatis, the toucans and other birds.
Fresh coconuts, ready to drink, were waiting in the refrigerator upon our arrival, and a bouquet of flowers sat on the counter. These nice touches were much appreciated.
Although the property is secluded, having a car at your disposal makes two towns, and nearby beaches easily accessed.
Comprehensive information was available beforehand and very helpful for driving. Communication with the owner, J. Reilly was easy and any queries or concerns were addressed promptly. With his recommendations, we enjoyed lunching at La Parcelas, and barbequing fresh fish purchased from the vendors nearby.
Overall, our two older couples had a relaxing and most pleasurable week.

From fresh local flower arrangements at arrival to the perfect jump off location, Flying Toucans is a Costa Rican Gem that is not to be missed. After visiting 2 national parks in as many days we decided there's really no reason to leave. The scenery, wildlife and overall vibe at FT are unbeatable. Magical View!
My husband and I have been coming to Costa Rica for almost 10 years. We usually rent a house for a month or two and work while we visit. Flying Toucans was the greatest place to relax, unwind, and take in the Costa Rican wildlife and nature that we love so much. We've already booked again for next year!
From the start, arriving at Flying Toucans is easy- really accessible off the Costanera. The house was clean, and the beautiful wood finishes are very well cared for. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals to enjoy at your outside dining table.
The beds are comfortable, the linens are great and the showers have a great outside feel to them. There is a very large balcony off the second-floor master bedroom.
We really enjoyed seeing and hearing the Howlers, the Toucans, Coatimundi, Agouti, and the Capuchins. And every day there were a half dozen hummingbirds around the pool area.
John was the best. He spent time talking with us about the house and was wonderful at making us feel welcome. He told us where to hike to see waterfalls, which was great fun. The house and landscape are expertly cared for by Joiner, who left us coconuts to drink from-great after a hike!
The view is spectacular, some of the best we've experienced in Costa Rica. We could see the sunrise and the sunset every day. This home is special, and we've rented a dozen homes over the years. We are looking forward to our next stay at Flying Toucans!

Located between 2 nice little towns with plenty of great restaurants, grocery stores and everything you would want to do on your list! The grounds around the house were incredible, the flora and fauna, the critters you were able to observe (birds (toucans, scarlett mackaws, etc), jesus christ lizards, coatis, white faced monkeys, etc. The kids absolutely loved the pool and we enjoyed sitting comfortably in the outdoor living room watching them. You cannot beat the views at this house, looking out over the pool to see the whale tail, it was breath taking. It was also a great spot for some incredible sunsets. I really cant say enough good things about this house! The owner. John, was so incredibly knowledge and helpful from months before our stay, to reaching out right before it and even once we arrived. It was truly a pleasure working with John! Do yourselves a favor and book this house for your trip, you will not regret it! We will be back to Flying Toucans!

This property is amazing. Great location and has to be one of the best views around. The kitchen and outdoor living areas are downstairs and the two bedrooms are upstairs, which you take an outdoor staircase to get upstairs. House is well equipped and comfortable. only the two bedrooms have AC and I personally didn’t feel they cooled adequately, but know this comment is coming from a person who is a very hot sleeper and likes bedrooms really cold. My husband had no issues with the temperature. In comparison to other homes we’ve rented, the bedrooms weren’t as comfortable. Beds weren’t as comfy and linens very basics. Again, I’m very picky on my linens and mattresses. So these things may not bother most people. Owners are very nice and communicate very well. They have a gem of a property at Flying Toucans.property is well kept and clean. I would highly recommend this property.

This house is truly a little piece of paradise. The location was perfect! Located between 2 nice little towns with plenty of great restaurants, grocery stores and everything you would want to do on your list!
