About this cottage rental

It's almost unbelievable. The river and usually a beach are about a five minute walk out your door. Kayaks at the river. Three doubles and six singles. Side by side, six seater, take you to the Wind Caves and Chicken Corner. Three to four hours for $250. Less than half what they cost in town. There are unlimited hikes from the property and many more near by.

There is so much wildlife it's hard to keep track of. In addition to the hundred or so birds, squirrels, and chipmunks that come to eat each day at the lodge, there's the man himself, Kobae. Kobae is the 210 pound security tortoise that lives at the lodge and when he's not hanging out on the porch, or chowing down on romaine, he'll be looking for someone to go hiking with. Pets allowed: dogs less than 20 lbs per pet (limit one pet total). With evening the lodge front porch comes alive. Some combination of ringtail, skunk, fox, and raccoon nightly show up for dinner. At the hogan you're welcome to hang out at the fire pit or sit in gravity chairs and view the night sky. For kids especially it's an incredible experience.

The night sky, the incredible views, the critters, the side by sides, the beach, the river, kayaking, Wind Caves, hiking, all here. Nobody else has what Base Camp has or even comes close. Worry about other parts of your trip but don’t worry about this part. I live here pretty much 24/7/365 and I’ve been sharing it with guests for nineteen years. You want an adventure, not just staying somewhere, you found it.

Now, having said all that, it’s quiet, off the grid, and you want to get away, that’s here too. Some folks just sit on the deck and unwind, enjoying the landscape, wildlife, or reading. There’s no shortage of those spots. I’ve spent many a morning hiking out to a different place each day and reading.

Whatever you want to do, you don't have to go anywhere, all you have to do is walk out the door. That’s special.

See you soon,

Tom

It’s hard to overstate just how cool this place is. You will be able to experience the beautiful canyons all to yourself.

This property was so remote and spectacularly beautiful. The setting is amazing and the host and staff are very friendly and helpful. If you stay here and want to go into the town of Moab, it takes longer than 45 minutes to get to town.......if that is important to you. But you can see plenty of beauty just staying on the property. Hiking, kayaking on the Colorado river and driving some 4 wheel drive roads to some spectacular sites are all within close reach or actually on the property itself. Really the only negative thing for us was that for the price, things could have been a little cleaner. But overall, staying here was a wonderful experience.

My Son and I wanted a remote Moab experience and that is what we got. When I made the reservation I noticed it was 17 miles outside of Moab. What I missed was that it takes about 1.2 hours to drive out because it’s located on a trail. It has a road name but I would not consider it a road by most standards. On the way out the first time I was very careful and it took longer. Once we got to the location I felt better about the trip out and it was not as bad as it first seemed and was part of the adventure. You do need 4 wheel drive and some height to the vehicle but a stock Chevy truck had no issues. We went back into town another day to do some biking but I would tell anyone renting to bring your bikes and bring your camping mentality and you will never need to go into town. It was exactly what we wanted and the owner Tom and his team were very friendly and great to talk to. They had lots of suggestions for things to do. My son and I went for long hikes and every place was a bit different. We did not get time to Kayak on the Colorado but the next time we will. We will be back!!

Such a beautiful place! Fantastic view of and access to Colorado River. And peaceful. So dog friendly. We really appreciate that a lot. Beautiful patio to hang out on with great sun shelter, grill, campfire area (with tons of wood stacked up right there next to fire area -thanks). Don’t expect drinking water out of a faucet here. But Tom has provided plenty of fresh water for you. Tom is easy to reach through walkie-talkie for any needs and questions. We really enjoyed our stay a lot and appreciate Tom and the others. Our opinion on the road to get to rental place: it is definitely a 4WD road. We do not recommend any AWD vehicles except Subaru or similar that have high clearance. Even with those you need to make sure your car has the power to get up the short steep hills. If you do not like steep drop offs we dont recommend driving this road. We have a Toyota Tacoma 4WD, are from CO, and my husband has quite a bit of experience driving 4WD roads. This road was not too challenging for him but he did have to use a few of those skills. You have to pay attention all of the time. My husband warns about inexperienced and inconsiderate people on rental Razors that come whipping around corners and disregard rules of the road. We encountered way too many on the way down. I don’t know if this was typical. Possibly more than usual due to Spring Break. As long as you are good with the road, Tom’s place is really great. We wish we could have stayed another night. Thanks!
