What a lovely place. Perfectly located as a stopover towards Tortoguero (an hour from the boat in Pavona). Super sweet hosts who do everything to make you feel comfortable. Nice comfortable rooms (be sure to ask for the beautiful, new tree house) and already an adventure to walk around in the beautifully landscaped garden. With a bit of luck you will immediately see toucans, hummingbirds, a basilisk or a sloth. All this supplemented with a delicious breakfast and dinner. Recommended.

We spent only one night on our way to Tortuguero but enjoyed a lot our stay. This place is the result of passion and continuous work to make it a beautiful and warm place. Jose and Silvia are the kindest hosts. The art of Silvia is blossoming everywhere in this place: she is so talented

what a unexpected beautiful experience! I needed somewhere to break up my drive & stumbled upon this place.
it’s basically a BnB style. your hosts Jose & Sylvia are so lovely! what a beautiful house! I’m glad that even with my beginners Spanish we could have some conversations together. their garden is just LUSH!!!! and I had even forgotten that it came with breakfast in the morning. I stayed in the 4bed dorm & lhad it all to myself. If you are so lucky to be also greeted with the most delicious brownie I’ve ever had you will give this place a 10/10 also!
they were just the most loveliest of hosts, just down to really little things that made me feel so welcomed as a person travelling by themself.
some points of info
* it is a person’s house in a small town off the beaten track. I had a car so it was easy to get to.
* there is a supermarket & small restaurant (closes at 8pm) literally 5 min walk away & felt more than safe enough
* towels provided
* saw an ant eater in the evening in the garden whilst having my dinner
* I had a beautiful home cooked soufflé & fresh fruits for the morning
* bathroom inside the 4 dorm room
* fridge inside the 4 dorm room
cold water only (I think?) but as to be expected in CR

Lovely couple. We are very glad for this one night stop on our way from LA Fortuna to Puerto Viejo with our 1 year old baby. The owners live there and are very kind. Though they speak only Spanish, they were so helpful in everything. The recommended a great restaurant 10 minutes drive away with nice vegan options. We got amazing local vegan breakfast that they made themselves. Their garden is so artistic and pretty. Such a nice visit in authentic Costa Rica place. Not touristic in any way, modest and sweet. Warmly recommended!

The owners are very friendly, helpful and accommodating. We needed a mid-point stay while driving between the La Fortuna area and the Puerto Viejo de Talamanca area. This location worked well. We arrived early evening and left in the morning. We generally stay in rooms costing 3 or 4 times more, but there is not much available in this area west of Limon. We were in a cabin with a double bed. Nothing luxurious, but still fair enough for the price. Breakfast on the open-air porch was plentiful, homemade and delicious. The husband-wife hosts will do most anything for you. (They speak little English, and we speak little Spanish, but everything worked out well.) The small grounds and décor are special. The wife was formerly an art teacher and her talents are shown and displayed throughout the property. Endless amounts of small and large clever pieces of her work on randomly displayed. It gives you a real sense of being in Costa Rica and the pride the owners have in their property. The neighborhood is rather tightly packed, but this property gives you a sense of seclusion. We were able to park our car is an enclosed covered garage area. If you keep in mind the reasonable price, and the slim choices of places to stay in the area, I think Salamandra was a very good value.
There is no hot water in the rooms... so you just make due when washing of bathing. Also, the floor-standing air-conditioner is quite noisy, but it does help cool the room.

We really liked the decorations and all the beautiful nature in the surroundings.
The bed and living areas were comfortable.

We loved everything about the property. Sylvia and Jose are the loviest people, despite the fact we had very limited ability to communicate because neither spoke the others language, they made us feel very welcome. The house and garden are just incredible. So unique. Jose made us a lovely breakfast and we left wishing we had longer there.

Jose and Silvia are lovely, so accommodating and helpful! Their house is amazing, full of Silvia’s art creations and it has an amazing garden full of plants and birds. It’s a good place to stay if you have a car to explore the surrounding area. Breakfast is included and is really nice, each day Jose brought a bowl of fresh fruit and gallo pinto, eggs, cheese and toast, and the coffee was delicious!
There were a lot of ants and cobwebs in the dorm room so it didn’t feel super clean
I think a dorm room is quite pricey (around $30 per night) for the quality of the room

Silvia and José were so welcoming from the get-go. I spent the most pleasant evening chatting and listening to music with them. The house is a true jewel, full of Silvia's art, and so is the garden, lush and fresh. Together, all these create a little bubble of paradise where I will surely go back!

I absolutely loved staying at Salamandra, I ended up staying a lot longer than originally planned! Jose and Silvia are incredible hosts and I felt so at home there, but I also had my own space and privacy. The breakfast was always great, and almost every night I ate dinner with them too, was so good spending time with them. Their house is set in the most beautiful garden with so much art, plant and wildlife, with a little river and a lovely outdoor space I used for yoga in the mornings. It really feels like paradise. Jose made sure I had everything I needed, moving furniture around to give me a desk in my room. Can't recommend Salamandra enough if you're in the Caribbean region!
Jiménez is a pretty quiet place which might not be for everyone, but you can get to the coast and back in a day and it's not that far from San Jose

Silvia and José are perfect host, they welcome you, they spoil you with food and drink and with their knowledge and info about the country. It has been an absolute pleasure to stay in Salamandra lodge, surrounded by pure nature and great energy!
Missing hot water but outside temperature in this region is hot and humid and you wish to take a fresh shower!

Jose was wonderful. After he opened the gate, we were in a tropical paradise. The grounds and cottage are beautiful. Jose was helpful and friendly. The breakfast was amazing. The stay at Salamandra was the highlight of our trip. We saw the most colorful birds while enjoying our breakfast.
It was perfect.

We have enjoyed our stay at this place. José and Silvia are such an amazing couple. They took really good care of us. Helped us with some free time, told us what to see or where to go. Even though we can't speak a word in Spanish and José and Silvia can't speak English, we've had nice long talk. Because if one wants to, everything is possible 🙂 I hope once we will meet again.

Jose and Silvia made us feel at home right from the start. Their home and the grounds are such a unique experience that you feel like you are in the jungle. They even have a sloth that graced us with her presence during breakfast. Silvia also made us such delicious breakfast both mornings. They are such a lovely couple who makes you feel like family. They were easy to talk to and were so inviting. We would recommend everyone to stay with them for a different kind of AirBNB experience. We are grateful for their kindness!

This place is absolutely fantastic. The hosts are the kindest people on earth. Even if they don't speak English very well (and our Spanish is quite bad) we had a lot of discussions. If you stay at this place, get ready to enter a magical world. The garden is a jungle on its own. So many animals. Breakfast was amazing. The room is new. We would go back without hesitation.
We liked everything!
