About this cabin rental

Bookings of less than 6 days will be considered from opening in April to June 20th and again from August 20 to closing. The Cabin at West Cott allows guests to enjoy the lake and experience wilderness, while also exploring their energy use and how they impact the planet we live on. The cabin is not connected to any electrical supply company. It is a solar powered home, that can sufficiently provide electricity for the energy aware family. There are two diesel generators that provide backup, but ideally should rarely come on. How much they come on is determined by the guests energy consciousness. The Cabin at West Cott is on a quiet lake with good fishing and full access to the Winnipeg River. Whether it's a leisurely trip by water to Minaki, or kayaking through wild rice filled bays, adventure awaits. Wildlife can be seen from the dining table or dock. Eagles are a regular sight, travelling to and from their nests, feeding and training their young. Fall hunting and winter snowmobile activities make for 12 months of fun. There are 880 square feet of living space, including a 220 square foot sunroom. The cabin is a two minute treed walk to the water. Due to fluctuating levels of the Winnipeg River system, at times the ramp to the floating dock can be steep. This can be difficult for people with mobility issues. The cabin contains two private bedrooms and sleeps 6 comfortably. Two cots are available if required. There is a cozy propane fireplace for chilly evenings or rainy days. The cabin shares a dock with the main house. The property is not suitable for people with mobility problems. - There is no loud music or parties allowed at anytime. Quiet time is enforced after 10:00pm - Any evidence of smoking indoors will result in a minimum cleaning charge of $200.00. - There are absolutely no pets allowed. Any evidence of pets will result in a minimum cleaning charge of $200.00 - No cleaning fish on the deck or dock. All fish remains must be taken far from the property, as they attract bears. If there is evidence of fish cleaning, there is a minimum sanitation charge of $200.00 If payment for extra guests is not automatically charged to your booking, the amount of $25 per day per guest >6 is due upon arrival.

Very quiet, relaxing spot. Had the large dock to ourselves for excellent kayaking & swimming. Beds are doubles (& squeaky) but very comfortable. We had plenty of solar power for our week long stay. Susan was very helpful with any questions we had.

We very much enjoyed our vacation! Everything was as described. The walk to the dock was quick, we swam, used the canoe and kayaks, they were in great shape, as was the dock. The cabin was clean, the large kitchen made meal prep easy. Susan was an excellent host. We’ll be back!

We enjoyed our stay but a few things could be improved on. i.e. - the fire pit was in the edge of the woods and very overgrown - we did not use it. The path to the lake could have been cleared of twigs, brush and debris (I think we were maybe the 1st guests this year?) Tics abound and we spent quite a bit of time tic checking, photographing and researching online to ascertain that they appear to be dog tics and not deer tics, which carry Lyme disease. It would be good to have some info about this provided. To reduce tics it would be good to have the long grasses about the entrances cut back so you don't have to brush through them to enter or exit. We found kid stuff buried in the couch cushions that was a remnant of someone else's stay. A more thorough check by housekeeping would have been appreciated. Also - kitchen needs some bowls for salad and other food prep. Overall we enjoyed ourselves very much, especially the deer grazing in the meadow, the young groundhog family on the hill, the lake and docks. Lots of photo ops!

We spent an enjoyable week canoeing, kayaking, swimming and otherwise just taking in the forest and lake setting. The cabin is spacious and comfortable with many windows to let in the fresh air. Susan was quick to respond to questions and requests and the cabin was a short drive to Kenora and to some popular day-use and hiking spots.

Was a lovely place to have a week of quiet lake life. Saw lots of eagles, turtles and fish. And we swam, kayaked and canoed every day on the virtually private lake among the water lilies.

We enjoyed our stay at this property it was very peaceful and a unique experience at a primarily solar powered residence. The fishing off the dock was tremendous and a great location for swimming.

Susan's cabin is huge and modern and fantastic. I very much liked my stay there. We had a lot of wind shooting down the channels when we were there that made handling the light canoes difficult. I would bring a little row boat my next time. Susan herself, is an extraordinary person who was a pleasure to meet and deal with. The fishing was the best walleye fishing I have ever experienced.
