Everything was perfect. It was the best ryokan we stayed at. There were little details that showed us the care provided to clients : a hot kettle and the luggages we left were waiting for us in the room. The staff took care of patrons' umbrella for drying, etc.
The room was really calm. The onsen isn't next to the rooms so there is no heating noise. We loved the room and the veranda area with the view outside.
The onsen temperature was perfect for us, hot but not boiling so you could actually rest a bit in the onsen. Also, there was a time slot for tattooed people (between 21h and 00h), which I find a great solution for accommodating both Japanese traditions and international guests.
The temperature of the dining room was also perfect. Dinner was delicious.
We noticed only a few things that could be improved :
There is a barely visible step for entering the outdoor onsen. Both me and my partner almost fell. A "watch your step" sign would be welcome, as it could be dangerous.
We understand the breaksast was Japanese style, but we would have like a choice of drinks, such as coffee, hot chocolate or fruit juice.
I would have like a smaller light for the evening.
The dinner room was cold at breakfast. The restroom light was hard to find.

We stayed only one night and had memorable experience at Nikko Tokanso!
Staff was welcoming and attentive, and the room and onsen were clean and well kept.
As a family with kids we enjoyed the location, the staff courtesy and the fantastic dinner and breakfast they provided.

Nothing in particular.
The lady on the front-desk was not very kind or empathetic to a request for aide with transportation. It wasn't the fact that she was unable to help, it was her entire tone and demeanor. That severely soured the mood for me. The breakfast was also underwhelming, and my Japanese partner refered to it as "unacceptable" when I showed him pictures. It is barely on the line of "acceptable" for foreign guests who aren't really familiar with Japanese hospitality.
