Officially the smallest neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Allegheny West is home to 19th century architecture characteristic of the gilded industrial era. Originally named Allegheny City, the neighborhood was considered the gold coast of the region, and stood among the wealthiest in the world before annexation by Pittsburgh in 1907. Built in the 1870s, our townhouse is part of a historic row house district. Many of the original floor beams, as well as exposed brick, were preserved during the renovation. Ceilings were restored to their 12 foot height throughout the living room and kitchen, while lofted ceilings were constructed in the bedrooms. The neighborhood is home to a mix of eclectic businesses and historic sites, including a local bookstore, bars, an excellent Thai restaurant, Peppi's legendary cheese steaks ("home of the RoethlisBurger"), the Jones Mansion, and the birthplace of writer and poet Gertrude Stein on Beech Street. Nearby is Allegheny Commons, a beautiful and peaceful city park. We hope you enjoy the setting as much as we do! Plus, inexpensive metered street parking is available in front (on Western Ave, the street in front of our building). Our free parking permit works great for Steelers game day, Pirates games, and stadium events (including concerts). We are located within a short walking distance of stadiums— so close that the parking lot across the street is used for fans and charges $45-65 to park on game day, making the free parking parking pass that is included in this rental a huge plus! Getting Around: Our apartment is centrally located within walking distance to bus and light-rail lines, as well as a city-sponsored bike rental station (1 block from our place).
