Originally paid for a bed in a 12 person multi share room but was upgraded for free twice, first to a 4 bed room and then to my own private room. Overall the staff were very friendly and it is a very sociable hostel, would definitely recommend for younger travellers.

Three big perks of Pura Vida - The free tours it organises are superb, I was impressed by very knowledgeable and caring Lari who took me to see a social project up in Cantagallo. The position is excellent, a minute's walk from the beach. The evening activities it organises are a lot of fun, I thoroughly enjoyed the free samba lesson.
As other reviews have pointed out better than me, this is a party hostel. They don't tell you this when you book. The average age is early twenties (who probably leave all the 10-point reviews) and the cleanliness of dorms and bathrooms are those of a campsite. They play music late into the night and depending on who you find in reception you could be treated with care and attention or as if you were a real nuisance. Overpriced for what it is: if you are not 19 and your days of late night beer pong are over, you can find hostels at half this price in Rio where the vibe is a bit less Animal House.
