Very easy to get around the big island from here! Host Donna was very responsive. Well stocked kitchen. Nice size apartment!! Nicely decorated. Very comfortable bed!! Nice to be away from the crowds in Kona town!! But not too far away!

Our stay was great! The view and nature surrounding this property were what we were looking for! Relaxing!!! Loved the pets they have! A few minor things were not as expected, but over all a nice place to stay.

The view was amazing and it was quiet with more natural noises than anything else! …loved being on a pretty property overlooking the ocean! It is farther from the beach than we expected, but that was because it was the first time to this island. Loved the house pets visits!

Loved the views, very comfortable, and fresh eggs were a bonus. Patio visits from owners dogs and cat were a treat.

This rental was perfect for our needs. Plenty spacious with a comfortable bed, spacious bathroom and well equipped kitchen. The outdoor patio was lovely. We appreciated the extras such as an outdoor grill, ice chest, and fresh eggs. Our only advice to other travelers is to check in during the day because finding this "hideaway" at night would be very challenging. It's a lovely location but tucked behind other properties up a narrow, steep driveway. Once we found it, we loved it!

Our host was very quickly responded to any questions and texts that we sent. The lodging was just as described and very convenient to the driving trips that we had planned. She even included a dozen fresh eggs from her chickens, wine and some munchies.

Anyone using this suite should be aware of issues . First day of arrival we were mopping up water for the following two days . There’s a smell in the unit that made me cough . I would never rent this unit again . Decide to leave early

It was a perfect place for us to have a low-keyed stay, as we were heading into a family reunion week on another island. It was a busy time for the owners, as well—holidays! The owner is a seamstress extraordinaire, and a potter.
Kalaoa Hideway is in a great location—very convenient to the airport; our favorite beaches, Kikaua Point Beach Park and Kukio Beach, and many other beaches; Costco and the shops on the north side of town; the highway to Hilo; and to other spots on the north end of the island. We’d been to the Big Island before and knew we wanted to be out of Kona and to the north. The unit is very spacious and was very clean. It was well-stocked with everything needed for food prep, and we ate most of our meals there, outside on the lanai, sometimes accompanied by the dogs, cat, and chickens which were all friendly. The bed was very comfortable! The bathroom was spacious and the shower, perfect!
The landscaping is very casual, and the owners are generous with fruit from their trees and their herbs, and we had access to fresh eggs!
We were surprised at the road noise from the highway (190) below the house, but it quieted down by evening. We were also serenaded by Coqui frogs every evening, which we enjoyed, and they also quieted down by bedtime.
Thank you, Donna and Jeff for helping us kick off our anniversary celebration!

The location looks nicely isolated on the map. The pictures are nice as well.
Unfortunately, there are many negatives. Terrible is the smell of mold, which can only be improved somewhat by a lot of airing. However, the cabinets always smell terribly of mold.
Directly opposite in 20m distance someone works on a boat and the whole day is worked with the belt grinder, flex, etc.. Above one trample people and especially a child. You can also hear the TV from above.
One has terror day and night.
The windows in the bedroom and bathroom face a garage and the basement rooms with washing machine. These windows are the terrible US models that you can only adjust the angle and always have lots of gaps. No insulation against noise and the wind just blows through. If someone is in the garage or by the washing machine you can wave from the shower or toilet.
The extremely loud coqui (frog) is extremely active in the area at night. Not without reason earplugs are provided.
The washing machine can only be used if more than 5 nights are booked and then only cold laundry. And don't worry, the Chinese owner comes to check. As soon as you asked for the use of the washing machine, the owner patrols regular and suddenly for 2 days laundry in the machine, which is not taken out.
It came at the beginning a man briefly with two plant pots. Hardly a hello or anything.
Fortunately, all this has not happened to us at any accommodation in Hawaii. And in all the years with private accommodations also not otherwise.

This home has a lovely view and can be used as a very nice base to explore the island. Caveat! Do not try to find this location after dark
Even with GPS it’s challenging

Everything at this rental was just as listed and the hospitality was warm and welcoming. Mrs Donna was so kind having left a gift for my birthday. The unit has everything you need to be relaxed and adventure around the island. You overlook the sea and are super close to Thunder Mountain Coffee. Definitely need a car to be able to get to the cool spots. Dont hesitate on booking this spot if you plan on being on the island for a week or more as its the perfect home base. We went scuba diving for 3 days, had dinner in Kona a couple nights, visited our friends on their sail boat, did a day adventuring hard around the island and drove out to see the valleys. So to have this place was perfect. The host, her family and friends were friendly, shared stories, showed us around the property and were helpful with our questions.

Need a place to stay away from the industrial tourism? This is a good spot for it. Feels like staying in your relative's nicely appointed, lower-level suite. About ten minutes from "town" and a short and pleasant walk from a good neighborhood grocery store. Owners and their pets are very nice if you are up for being social, but they'll also keep to themselves if you are not. Had a pleasant stay here for a week with a friend.

This is a spacious, relaxing unit nestled in thick gardens with gorgeous views over Kona and the ocean. Kona is only a 10 minute drive away, but the unit's position high on the hill and surrounded by greenery makes it feel a world away. The owners were extremely welcoming and even brought us fresh bananas that they'd grown. A wonderful escape!

Donna & Jeff the property owners are wonderful. Donna made us feel at home right away. She shared fresh fruits, avocados & fresh eggs from her chickens (no roosters) which made our stay even better.
If you prefer a homey atmosphere over a resort then you will not be dissapointed.

Donna and Jeff were the best hosts we've ever stayed with. They were respectful of our space, but we were open to pick lemons, tangerines, bananas, herbs and more from their lush property. Donna welcomed us with fresh chicken eggs from their own little flock, and said goodbye with a gift of her illiquios (sp?) jam. We always appreciate "travel pets", and enjoyed their friendly dogs and cats. We stayed with Donna and Jeff for a month. Highly recommended.

My husband and I stayed here for two weeks. The king-size bed was very comfortable, and we appreciated the toiletries, which included shampoo and body wash. My daughter was there for the first week and slept on the pull out twin bed, which she found comfortable. You access this home from the Hawaii Belt Road, which makes it a good location for exploring the island. Being ten minutes from Costco and the airport was very handy.Donna's hospitality and providing helpful advice on where to go was much appreciated. She was responsive to any questions or concerns we had. Thank you for the fresh picked papayas, lemons, avocado and bananas which were grown on your property. It was a lovely surprise to arrive to fresh fruit and a bottle of wine...thank you!!!We enjoyed our stay on the Big Island, and having this home as our home away from home!

A few minuses
When we booked, the reviews looked good and it sounded like a great place to stay. Donna was nice when we met her on the first day, provided us with beach chairs and towels for which we are grateful. As well as the sample of local bananas was very tasty and kids really enjoyed those.
Once we arrived though, we found a few things that did not work for us. The unit was not very clean. Hair in the bathroom, crumbs on the kitchen counter. Dishes and pans and cups all needed to be washed before using them - were quite dirty. Took out one of the cutting boards and it was covered in dark dust, etc. Blankets had dirty spots on them.
The noise level in the evenings and mornings was quite a bit as owners live upstairs and were constantly moving furniture, walking heavy as well. So if you are a light sleeper, stay somewhere else.
They have pets on property and our son is allergic to cats and dogs. If you are prone to allergies, again, stay somewhere else. As much as Max and Samson were cute, it was a nuisance to eat outside. Samson, the cat, would jump on table or claw you asking for food. Max, the dog, will be there begging for food as well. So on some days we just ate inside to avoid that.
For us, minuses over-weighted the pluses of this property and we will not stay there again.

Spacious rooms and convenient location
We really enjoyed our four-night stay in this house. Both living room and bedroom are large comparing to two Airbnb places where we stayed in Volcano and Hilo during this trip. There are plenty of towels to use. There are a lot of ingredients in the kitchen. It is 10 minutes from Safeway, Costco, Target, Walmart and many restaurants. When the weather is good, we can see sunset on the ocean from the house. The house owner also provided a lot of information about the big island. The house is very quiet during nights although it is very close to highway 190.

We would book or again.

Great stay
I was working in the area (near the airport) and wanted to try something besides a downtown hotel. The hideaway was much larger than a hotel room was less expensive. It was clean, comfortable, and away from the noise and traffic. The bag of Kona coffee was great also. I would definitely stay here again on an extended visit to the island.

Excellent place!
Very roomy appartment. 4 people can comfortably stay in. Lots of gear is provided by the host: full kitchen with all utensils, dishes and mugs; towels and extra blankets; beach gear - you name it. Access to the washer if you stay 4 days or longer. Everything is just so comfy and easy! Donna, the host, is very nice and responsive to any questions. We had a great stay! Thank You!
