I used Uwajima Oriental Hotel for a stop-over traveling from Matsuyama to Kōchi and needed an affordable room not too far from the train station. There are closer hotels, but this one is also within convenient walking distance and rather affordable. It seems to cater mostly to young travelers and is styled in a cool, somewhat minimalist fashion – one might say Zen-style mixed with Scandinavian design ideas.
Check-in was quick, with very friendly young staff. The room was very clean, a little more spacious than many Japanese hotels I have stayed at, with a comfortable bed and the usual amenities. It had a decent view as well, and the night was quiet. I have not eaten any meals in the hotel restaurant. Two convenience stores can be found a few minutes by foot from the hotel.
All in all, Uwajima Oriental Hotel was an excellent choice for the purpose of my stay, providing good value.
Nothing to complain about... If you want something fancy or even closer to the train station, you have to pay quite a bit more. If you have a very conservative taste in hotels, this may not be the best choice, but I liked their slightly unconventional spirit!
