Excellent location and a beautiful traditional Japanese-style room.
Private onsen available for guests, which made the stay especially relaxing.
The bathroom lacked a shower curtain.

The staff were very patient and helpful. We spoke just a little Japanese but they were very patient in understanding us and helping us: figure out which bathrobes and sandals to wear outside; borrowing umbrellas; leaving luggage in the lobby; calling a cab; charging phones in the lobby; etc.
The room was old-fashioned and spacious, the onsen downstairs was superb and hot. Very close to all the hubbub in Dogo Onsen. They left snacks for us after making the bed, and left us a tiny, salty midnight snack, perfect replenishment after returning from Dogo Onsen.
It's old-fashioned, so there are a few awkward bits to the design: low doorways; drab overhead lighting (with a complicated remote I couldn't figure out); a light switch in the hallway? And not much of a view, though there's no need to look at the town—just go downstairs and visit it! No downsides I couldn't look past.
