We stayed at Yokotei for five nights and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It offers a good combination of traditional Japanese hospitality, excellent views, convenient access to Nagasaki, and good value.
Yokotei is one of three sister hotels located on the same hillside and is the one that focuses more on traditional Japanese-style dining. Our room overlooked Nagasaki city and the bay, with Mt Inasa directly across from us. The view was magnificent, particularly at night when the city lights came on. We were fortunate to have clear weather throughout our stay, so we could enjoy the view every day.
We opted for breakfast each morning, which was a traditional Japanese set breakfast. The menu changed daily and typically consisted of around ten different items, including rice, soup, fish and various local dishes. It was a very nice way to start the day and gave us the opportunity to try different Japanese foods. Guests also have the option of taking the buffet breakfast at the sister hotel, Baishokaku, next door.
Although the hotel is located on a hillside, getting around was quite easy. There is a complimentary shuttle between the hotel and Nagasaki Station, operating approximately hourly from 8am to 8pm. We also used Uber regularly. Waiting times were usually less than five minutes and we found the fares quite reasonable. Major attractions such as the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum and Peace Park, Oura Church and Glover Garden were generally within about 20 minutes by car.
One of the highlights of our stay was the Shippoku dinner at Yokotei. It was an excellent experience and something I would definitely recommend trying at least once while staying here. Nagasaki itself also has plenty of good places to eat, and the local beef is well worth trying.
The staff were consistently courteous and helpful. A special mention must go to Mr Noda, the manager, who was particularly attentive to our needs and helped make our stay very comfortable.
There was nothing we disliked about Yokotei. Its hillside setting, traditional rooms, futons, public bath and Japanese-style dining were all part of the character that attracted us to the hotel in the first place. Rather than seeing these features as limitations, we regarded them as an important part of the experience we had chosen.
Overall, Yokotei was a very enjoyable five-night stay. It may not be intended to provide the facilities of a large modern international hotel, but that is not really its appeal. What it offers is a genuine traditional Japanese experience, very good hospitality, beautiful views and convenient access to Nagasaki’s main attractions. For us, it represented very good value and added considerably to our experience of Nagasaki.

My husband and I enjoyed staying in the Japanese style room in this hotel--we felt absolutely pampered! The warm welcome (cold towels on a hot day) and tea as we checked in, the tour of the hotel before settling in, and the futon service--all these signaled a wonderful stay. We enjoyed the delicious breakfast and the dinner served in our room (you have to reserve this ahead), the view of the harbor from our room, and the onsen. The shuttle service worked very well to get us to and from Nagasaki Station.
I tried to reserve dinner via a message through Booking.com on our first night, but the message never seemed to get through. We were advised to take the shuttle back to Nagasaki Station (which had many good offerings). We did have a wonderful dinner on the second night. So the hotel might be advised to check communication via the Booking platform more regularly.

Great location, perfect view over Nagasaki bay. We enjoyed the port fireworks from there, excellent.
