Mt.Takao Base Camp

Friendly staff and service, great location - short walking distance from train station and Mt. Takao base

Room is very minimal, dorm like. Shared bathrooms and toilets.

Extremely convenient location, warm beds, and good company. A great place to relax your muscles after a long climb and the food was absolutely delicious!

You need to make sure to remember to bring your own towels, we forgot! But we were able to purchase some at the conbini right next door.

Good location and ambience

It’s really cheap and the location is absolutely perfect, you walk 5 minutes to the hub of trail heads that lead up to Mt Takao. The staff are friendly, and the food offered is somewhat reasonably priced and really tasty. I recommend the chicken katsu + kiwi fruit burger.

So the beds are bunks, which is fine. I’ve been to Japan 5 times over the last few years and regularly stay at capsule hostels, etc. The bed isn’t as uncomfortable as some are saying, it’s pretty similar to majority of Japanese hostel mattresses to be honest. Unfortunately, I got maybe 20 minutes of sleep in total during my stay. This is a massive problem, I only booked the place to have somewhere to sleep before a very long flight home the next day. It was caused by another guest who was in the bunk directly beneath me, rummaging through luggage at 1am before proceeding to regularly bang the bed making it physically shake every few minutes and snoring louder than a truck. Like zero exaggeration- the snoring alone would sometimes vibrate the wall next to my head. So I reached out to the property via this app in which I’m leaving the review (Booking.com) - as I have at every place I’ve ever booked in Japan, dozens of times about minor issues etc, where I always always receive a response in a quick or reasonable timeframe. I outlined the issue, that it would be (literally as described above) impossible to sleep. And it was incredibly important I got the sleep on this last night. I asked if it were possible to switch beds into another room, as it was quite quiet with not too many guests that night that I’d seen or heard, the lobby was empty aside from me and one other from my room for example. I outlined (it was at 2am at this point and I was at my wits end) that if I wasn’t able to swap, I would need to sleep in the lobby. There’s a single chair with some padding there, and a bunch of wooden stools. Anyway, I never received a response. So I took my blanket, couldn’t sleep on the chair because of the size, and instead put the padded bit from the chair on the floor and slept there with my pillow.
