Makoto’s Guest House was probably the best part of my trip to Japan!! I first ended up at a fancy hotel but felt very sheltered. When I decided to move to a hostel for a little more adventure, I was nervous, but was so relieved to end up at MGH over the other options. Firstly, It was extremely affordable and fair, but more importantly, it had a unique and calming vibe that made my stay very relaxing and memorable. I met some wonderful people during my stay who were from many different backgrounds and creeds. It’s very clean and allows for a fun adventure because of the social aspect. Almost all guests, while from many different countries, all spoke English, which worked out well for me as an American :) the hostel is in a very relaxing, smaller neighborhood on the outside “suburbs” of Tokyo called Kameari—-about a 10 mins walk from the train, and a short walk to grocery stores, laundry mat and restaurants. Small town vibe, but plenty to do! I highly recommend this place to world travelers who seek a fun and different experience to allow for a trip you will never forget.
Simple, but a few strict rules to follow—-I think they’re fair when you consider the whole package, but I would caution all potential residents to make sure you read the rules when you arrive as MAKOTO is often on site and will be sure to enforce the guidelines. As long as you follow them, you will be fine…things such as proper house etiquette (no shoes (normal in Japan), clear dish washing procedures like putting the dishes back immediately after washing, no food upstairs, no shower 11am-5pm etc.) not a big deal! But FYI

I originally booked because I wanted to make new friends and acquaintances, and I was not disappointed. Best staff ever, adorable, I had hours long conversations with them. And most people staying there are extremely open to chat as well. Would definitely recommend if what you’re looking for is to talk and meet new people. Definitely worth it!

Our stay at Makoto Guesthouse was absolutely amazing. We had stayed in other two hostels in Tokyo before, and this was the best one for sure.
The highlight for me was the atmosphere of the guesthouse. Makoto has created a place that invites people to hang out and get to know each other; everyone –members of staff and guests– are super welcoming and open, we only stayed for 5 days and we made tons of friends. We even went to karaoke all together on our last night. If you want to meet new people, make connections and enjoy your stay this is the place!!!
As I said, every member of staff was super helpful, always available when we needed help for anything, they also had a lot of recommendations of things to do, and places to visit around the area. Shoutout Makoto, Sarah and Chantel, you are the best 💕
The beds were very comfortable, and the facilities were very clean, you could see members of staff cleaning and making sure everything was on point every single day.
The area is quiet and really nice, plenty of things to do and really nice restaurants all in walking distance, without the crowds from the center of Tokyo. It is also really well connected by train.
I definitely know where I’ll be staying every time I’m in Tokyo. 10000/10 recommended.

Maybe the neighborhood.
Very dirty house, stuffs are everywhere, not like a hostel, more like someone’s house. Shoes are no order outside and several times I found my shoes covered by other people’s shoes. You need to pay if you want a towel. Can not take shower from 11am-5pm. Can not make phone call inside, but people are noisy anyway. People like having party downstairs too. If you want to make friends maybe can try here. I stayed in lady’s dormitory but i heard men came and talked several times. I don’t feel safe honestly. Cheap but a lot of hostel same price with much more comfort and safety. I moved to another one near Shinjuku after, same price but it’s much way better.
