About this villa rental

Nestled in Umbria, this charming villa for $548 per night is a great option for your next vacation. 17th Century villa with six beds and baths, pool & complete privacy Completely private 16th Century farmhouse with stunning views over Umbria and Tuscany, Italy. Villa Sterlinghe is an ideal destination for a large group who dont want to live on top of each! The main Villa has three en suite bedrooms, the neighboring self contained Villetta has a further three en suite bedrooms - a perfect combination to mix and match friends or relatives. Sitting on the crest of a hill it looks out over uninterrupted views of seven valleys encompassing Umbrian and Tuscan countryside. Completely secluded, without any neighbours, overlooking houses or roads, the villa is set in six acres of natural gardens and olive groves with it’s own private 14 metre pool and pool house. The main Villa has three spacious double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms on the first floor including the stunning master suite. On the ground floor the villa has a brilliantly equipped kitchen & utility room with adjoining dinning room, sitting room and media room. The adjoining Villetta has a further three en suite bedrooms and its own fully equipped kitchen. All bedrooms are spacious doubles with superking beds that can be joined or separated according to your requirements. Central to life at Sterlinghe is the pool house. Situated between the Villa and Villette, the Pool House has a 30 square metre wrap around terrace, inside and outside kitchen, traditional wood fired Pizza Oven, Classic Tuscan fireplace BBQ and loads of comfortable seating. In rain or shine this brilliant space has stunning views over the hills and is a fantastic energy hub. Sufficiently far from bedrooms and bathed in night lights from the pool and terrace it also makes a great bar, but is sufficiently removed not to disturb anyone who might decide to make it an early night. Early in your stay we recommend inviting Angelo, the local Pizza chef, to show you how to make a classic Pizza, from thereafter it'll become a delicious lunchtime staple. Sterlinghe is an ideal destination for a group wanting their own exclusive villa. Sitting on the crest of a hill it looks out over uninterrupted views of Umbrian and Tuscan countryside. Completely secluded, without any neighbours or overlooking houses, the villa is set in six acres of natural gardens with olive groves and an abundance of fruit trees. While completely isolated, Sterlinghe also enjoys easy access to the local town of Citta di Castello, being only five kilometres down a quiet road. Citta di Castello is a delightful town, classically Tuscan, set on the banks of the Tiber and sheltering behind its Medieval walls. Stuffed with outstanding restaurants it has the full suite of specialist shops. If you fancy something more convenient then a supermarket is only 10 minutes from the house. Belonging to the same family for hundreds of years, the farmhouse fell into neglect in the 50’s and was sadly allowed to decline into an uninhabitable state. In 2005 we finally managed to purchase the property from an extended Italian family before embarking on a two year restoration. Set high in the foothills of the Appenines, the villa has three foot walls and shutters on every window, keeping it cool during the day, while the light evening breezes allow for a peaceful nights sleep. The views from the house and pool house provide a panorama untainted with buildings, roads or even telegraph poles. The shade provided by the olive groves delivers on the promise of the perfect Italian dream. Whether it’s the solitude of a country setting or an opportunity to immerse yourself in some of Italy’s finest sights, Sterlinghe is ideally suited for all tastes at all times of year. The Villa is ideal for large parties who want to keep their own privacy. Two families can easily be split across the main house and the adjoining Villetta. You can separate old from young, or young from old. There is no chance of early risers disturbing those who want to sleep in, and those who want to go to bed early can do so undisturbed. Villa Sterlinghe surpassed our expectations in every way, a truly magical place, which is clearly cherished. It has spectacular views in all directions; is thoughtfully and comprehensively equipped in a style sympathetic to the buildings but with every modern convenience ; has so much space both indoors and outside that it is possible for a large group (ours was 13, comprising 3 generations, aged 1-71) to gather all together or to be completely separate, relaxing in entrancing, beautiful surroundings. There are opportunities to be energetic and competitive eg the magnificent pool and table tennis, or simply to unwind, in a hammock or lavender scented nook. The pool house is a particularly wonderful feature and we made good use of its pizza oven, to the children’s delight. We are a family scattered across the globe and Villa Sterlinghe was the perfect, entrancing location for catching up with each others’ lives. The girls had experiences that they will always remember and the 6 year old summed it up for us all: ‘ I did so love my Italy holiday with all my family.’ It was a privilege to stay in such a beautiful place and we all hope to return one day. The owners of this property have thought of everything for all ages to enjoy a relaxing stay at Sterlinghe with lots to do. Marcello and Ines look after it perfectly for the owners and visitors. If you want to get away from it all it is certainly off the beaten track so be sure to use their directions - don’t use satnav!

You really never know what to expect when booking a holiday. Sterlinghe was absolutely a wonderful surprise. A magnificent spot hidden in the Umbrian mountains was exactly what we needed to reconnect with our adult children and family friends. There was room for everyone. Finding Sterlinghe was a little tricky and using the grid reference was helpful. Don't be put off by the dirt road because the destination is totally worth it! The rooms were clean and the kitchens well equipped. We loved having a private bathroom in every room. Lazy days spent at the pool and playing games in the cosy pool house was a perfect day. Ping pong, badminton and bocci were fun too. We loved it and we all want to return here to recharge again. Family Walters

Sterlinghe was perfect for us - exactly the right layout for a group of 15 including 3 pairs of parents and a gaggle of teens and younger kids. Lovingly restored, stunning views, fabulous pool, a variety of options for large group meals (in the shade by the pool house, terrace, inside, shady side of the main building). We had a week that our kids will always remember.

Sterlinghe was the perfect setting for getting together family and friends in a long awaited holiday. The setting is stunning — even more beautiful than the pictures show. And as noted in other reviews, there are numerous places to gather or be alone. Some favorite spots were morning coffee outside of the 1st floor loggia looking out over the landscape and property, as well as evening cocktails on the couches down by the pool house. The smell of lavender and the sounds of happy bumblebees and cicadas provided the perfect backdrop throughout the day. The place is set up for large groups and we ate all of our meals outside at one of the three large tables, depending on mood and temperature. We perfected our pizza making skills in two sessions with the pizza oven and had a delicious catered meal one night courtesy of Daniela and her chefs. While some ventured further afield, there was plenty to explore in Citta di Castello — we particularly recommend the two Fondazione Burri locations for anyone interested in modern art (and even those who don't think they do might be pleasantly surprised!). The work was stunning and such a treat that it was right nearby. There was a heatwave in Italy while we were there, but you wouldn't know it at the house — the rooms stay cool if closed up during the day, fans are kindly provided in each bedroom, a breeze comes through over the hills, and the pool is there for a quick cool down. And there is plenty to do — in addition to swimming, we played lots of ping pong and bocce — but it's also the perfect place to lounge with a book or catch up with people's lives after so long apart. We may all be back home now, but the memories of this very special place and our fabulous week there will live on. Thank you to Vicky and her team for exceeding our expectations!

We had the most wonderful week at Sterlinghe. The photos on the listing really don’t do it justice. The house has been beautifully done up with every bedroom as lovely as the next and amazingly comfortable beds! The pool house makes the villa more special than any other villa I have ever stayed in with breathtaking views across the mountain and not another house in site for miles. Again it has been so tastefully decorated and brilliantly equipped with pizza oven and bbq and comfortable seating. We would definitely come back to Sterlinghe and explore the surrounding area as we barely left the villa this time it was so hard to leave!

We spent a week at this magical villa celebrating our 50th anniversary with all our children and grand children. There were 15 of us total. The villa was well equipped for a large group and there was plenty of space for everyone to sit quietly in solitude as they soaked in the beauty. The pool and the pool house were wonderful to enjoy in the hot afternoons. We spent most of our time there after long days of excursions. It was truly a magical week! We hope that someday we will be able to return!
