We previously stayed with this host and had a positive experience, which is why we chose to book this property again. Unfortunately, this stay was very different.
About an hour before arrival, we notified the host that we were on the way. At that time, the host requested a $200 deposit through Apple Pay and a copy of our driver’s license. The reservation had already been paid in full, and neither of these requirements were disclosed in the listing or booking policies prior to arrival. After we contacted Booking, the host agreed to waive the deposit. This created unnecessary stress and confusion while we were already traveling out of state for a funeral.
When we arrived at the address provided by the host in the check-in instructions, we were unable to access the building. After calling, we were then informed that we were at the wrong building and needed to enter the building next door.
Once inside, we immediately documented the condition of the apartment. There were visible stains on multiple chairs and couches, broken kitchen blinds, and a cracked window. The blender was dirty, the stovetop had not been properly cleaned, and the microwave had a noticeable odor. In the bedroom, there was gum stuck to the nightstand. The laundry basket was broken, and the dryer lint trap appeared heavily overdue for cleaning. The apartment had four TVs but only two remotes. When this was brought to the host’s attention, we were told the previous guest may have misplaced them. We checked throughout the apartment and were unable to locate them.
For a three-bedroom apartment, only four towels and four washcloths were provided, which was not adequate for the size of the unit.
The nightly rate for this stay was nearly double what we paid during our previous visit for the same apartment layout. Based on the undisclosed deposit request, the confusion at check-in, the condition of the apartment upon arrival, and the lack of basic preparation, this stay did not reflect the price charged.
