Grand Bazaar: The biggest and brightest market in Marmaris is in Old Town and will meet your every need for holiday gifts and cultural treasures, or even simply lunch and a haircut.
Marmaris Castle: The major landmark in Marmaris is this castle, dating back to at least 1044 BC, located in the central old town and on the hills behind the marina. It opened to the public in 1991 and is one of the few Turkish castles that is now a museum; it housed local residents in 18 apartments until 1979. The view from the castle offers a stunning panorama of Marmaris Bay.
Heaven Island and Nimara Cave: Heaven Island is a peninsula a few miles south of Marmaris most known for the Nimara Cave. Though a place of worship for over 12,000 years, it also includes ancient ruins such as city walls, a watchtower, and ancient homesites. The cave is also notable for being the home of trogloxene butterflies which live part-time at the entrance to the cave. The peninsula can be reached in about an hour’s hike from Marmaris. Pamukkale Thermal Pools: A worthy day trip north of Marmaris in the Denizli district is a natural wonder of white calcium and salt encrusted hot springs filled with blue water terraced into a hillside. The name Pamukkale means “cotton fortress” and could not be more apt. An enchanting, otherworldly experience. If you skip a package tour to avoid the crowds, leave as early as possible as you only need a few hours here.
Rhodes: A beautiful Greek island rich in history and culture, and only one hour from Marmaris by catamaran. The city is much larger and more lively than Marmaris, and is divided into old town and new town by a giant medieval wall. Rhodes offers something for everyone. There are ancient castles, houses, and streets, as well as modern Art Deco buildings. The island has many gorgeous, lazy, golden beaches along crystal blue water as well as vibrant markets and cafes.
Fethiye: A friendly, modern vacation town on the coast just east of Marmaris with a surprising modern British influence, as well as ancient historical significance.
