Best Neighborhoods in Adelaide

  • The East End: The neighborhood divided east-west by King William Street and north-south by Wakefield Street is really the North East End. It is the home of the South Australian Museum, Central Market, Botanic Garden, and Rundle Mall — just to name a few of the many attractions.
  • The West End: More spread out than the East End, but just as buzzing with activity and opportunity, the West End neighborhood is home to Chinatown, Adelaide Gaol, MOD, and Jam Factory. The area is a little more artsy and quirky, with more art galleries and theatres, but you’ll also find scattered accommodations and dining options. The local bars fall in the same line of a little more independent and alternative.
  • North Adelaide: A somewhat quieter neighborhood directly north of the Adelaide Oval, North Adelaide offers a large collection of mostly mid-priced restaurants along O’Connell Street. Accommodations are scattered throughout the neighborhood with many within a few blocks of O’Connell Street as well.

Popular Destinations Near Adelaide

  • Barossa Valley: An hour northeast of downtown Adelaide is one of Australia’s most famous wine regions, known as Barossa Valley, with 150 wineries in the area. While Shiraz is the signature varietal, 40 other types are also cultivated and well-received. It has been said that this region has some of the longest unbroken lineages of both grapes and vintners — with some going into their seventh generation — as wine has been produced in this region since the mid-1800s. Barossa Valley terroir is unique in that it is a cool climate neighboring a warm climate, and there are numerous phenomenal restaurants to complement the phenomenal wine.
  • Glenelg: A seaside suburb of Adelaide with an iconic pier, Glenelg is easily accessible from the city center and popular with city-escapers and boaters alike. Glenelg is the oldest European settlement in Australia, and you can take the Glenelg Tram, which is the only remaining tram in operation in Adelaide. Jetty Road is a major shopping district that also includes delicious restaurants.

Places to Visit in Adelaide

  • Central Market: One of the largest food markets in Australia is Adelaide’s Central Market, featuring over 70 stalls vending fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, seafood, cheeses, baked goods, wine, and flowers, in addition to hosting multiple restaurants and cafes. It is a fun place to wander, eat, or shop.
  • Waterfall Gully: A waterfall park at the foot of Mount Lofty, Waterfall Gully lies three miles southeast of the city center. Additional waterfalls lead the way in the hike to the summit on a network of trails through pretty forests peppered with wildlife, or you can also take a car and drive to the top. Mt. Lofty Summit provides a spectacular view over the city and there is even a cafe at the top.
  • Adelaide Botanic Garden: Featuring stunning architecture to complement the botanical specimens, this botanic garden covers 120 acres and exhibits plants from all over Australia and other parts of the world. Free daily tours occur every day at mid-morning and the park also includes an upmarket restaurant.
  • Adelaide Gaol: One of Australia’s longest-running prisons that was operational until 1988, Adelaide Gaol was founded in 1841, housing 300,000 inmates in its span of existence. South Australia was the first colony developed without convict labor — thus the prison was built by employed labor to house settlers who broke laws. Today it is a heritage site and museum offering self-guided tours and pre-booked evening ghost tours. It is supposedly the most haunted place in South Australia.
  • Rundle Mall: Rundle Mall is an open-air pedestrianized shopping center consisting of a mix of historical and modern buildings. There are benches to stop and rest, restaurants to dine in, public art for entertainment, as well as an endless stream of shops in a mix of big brands and quirky independent stores.

What Is Adelaide, Australia Known For?

Due to its many colonial-era buildings that have been well-preserved, Adelaide has a distinctly European flair. Adelaide was a planned city developed around a grid that is now encircled by a main road, making the city borders plain to see. Once known as the “City of Churches,” Adelaide has reinvented itself as a sophisticated and multicultural city serving up world-class cuisine, memorable art and live music, and a fantastic festival schedule — fully surrounded by a wine region that produces award-winning wines. Additionally, Adelaide is an unofficial capital of Australian football and cricket, both of which are played in the Adelaide Oval Stadium. Adelaide also hosts the annual Tour Down Under, the biggest cycling race in the Southern Hemisphere.

Where Is Adelaide, Australia Located?

The state capital of South Australia, Adelaide rests on the southern Australian coast protected in the St. Vincent Gulf by Kangaroo Island. Adelaide Airport is five minutes east of downtown and close to the water. The city is an hour and a half flight from Melbourne, just over two hours by flight from Sydney, and a two and a half hour plane ride from Perth.
