"PORTOGHESI APARTMENT"
is a little gem tucked away on the second floor—accessible by elevator—of Palazzo Scapucci, better known as "Palazzo della Scimmia," dating back to the 16th century.
The building is constructed around one of the 300 towers erected in Rome by noble families in the Middle Ages (around 1040 AD), of which only 50 remain today, often hidden or incorporated into buildings such as “Palazzo Scapucci,” which later took its name from the family that built it in the 16th century.
Legend has it that the cradle of his newborn son was often watched over by a trained little monkey, as was the custom of the time, and that one day, snatched the child and carried him to the top of the tower.
The noble father desperately pleaded with it to return the child, entrusting his prayers to the Virgin Mary, until the little monkey came down and placed him back in his crib. This event was hailed as a miracle, and in gratitude for the grace received, the nobleman insisted that a perpetual light be kept burning at the top of the tower—a stipulation that, it seems, remains to this day a contractual clause tied to the succession of the building, under penalty of the contract’s nullity.
