Charme of a run-down youth hostel

The place is next to the slopes, and most of the time the heating was working and we had warm water. The family who runs the place is friendly. With a two day delay they gave us access to the internet, and there were towels and sheets available. That's about all I can say of what we liked.

Where to start. It's one of the worst places I have ever stayed in. We paid 144€ per night for the most terrible room. The entire place is falling apart. Even the door handle kept coming off, and the owner was unable to fix it. Luckily we had tools in the car and repaired it ourselves. The room had only beds, which were basically thin mattresses on hard wooden planks. No wardrobe, no shelf, no hook to hang your ski jacket. The windows were dirty so we had little view. The windowless bathroom had no heating and the ventilator was taped over. The entire house was dirty, messy, chaotic, broken, mold on the walls, nobody there during the day. The smell from the heating oil penetrated through the building and made us sick, at least while the heating was running, which was on most days only after 10 p.m. when we were already in bed. The radiator made a constant gurgling sound. The bar was closed, so no option to get food or drinks, although the bar looked very uncomfortable anyway. A waste of money. They rent rooms in a run down dormitory at the price of a proper hotel room. As there were zero options even to get a drink, we had to drive to one of the villages anyway every day, so the advantage of being next to the slopes was zero. The lifts open late anyway, after 9 a.m., and they close early at 2.45 p.m. Forgot to mention that when we arrived at 8 p.m., nobody was there and the place was locked. They had not expected us, although I had made the reservation days before on booking. They had not responded to messages either, and in the end we had to call them, wait in the freezing cold outside the house and then wait for them to clean a room. In hindsight I should not have been surprised that they charged the entire amount upfront through booking, as we would probably have left the next day.
