About this house rental

Nestled in Negombo, this attractive house for $144 per night is a great option for your next vacation. Negombo -West Winds is a brightly coloured house sitting in an acre of tropical garden within the peaceful fishing village, Dungalpitiya (near Negombo). It is situated directly on the beach and has the most amazing sunsets every night. You cannot swim at the beach directly outside the house but there are rock pools nearby perfect for paddling, and we have arranged a discount at a nearby hotel’s swimming pool. Alternatively, you could do a trip into Negombo (7 km away), a town full of tourist activities such as wind surfing, kite sailing, sailing etc. plus bars and restaurants. The garden is lovely for children and has a trampoline, hammocks, chickens and three friendly dogs. There is also a volleyball net, cricket equipment and lots of toys and books. The house is fully staffed with delicious local meals prepared by our wonderful cook. All washing, cleaning and cooking can be added for a price, £15 per person per day. We have contact numbers for vehicles that can be hired for long journeys. Sri Lanka is blessed with many different types of wetland, such as estuaries, lagoons, sea grass beds, mangroves and marshes. These areas are of immense environmental, economic and social importance, yet they are increasingly under threat. Part of the marsh known as Muthurajawela near Negombo is a protected area open to the public. Kelaniya Buddhist Temple It is believed that the Buddha visited this temple, which is located just over 10 miles to the south of Negombo. Today it’s a major pilgrimage site for Buddhist devotees and a site of interest for many visitors. You’ll see a series of wall paintings in the interior that date from the mid-20th century. of Kelaniya in the month of November/December and January every year. It has a spectacular Duruthu Maha Perahera in the month of November/December and January and a good place to go for Vesak. Gangarama Buddist Temple This is one of the most frequently visited Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, second only in popularity to the Temple of the Tooth, located in Kandy. The temple dates from the early 14th century and it is thought that the Buddha preached at this spot approximately 2,000 years ago. Highlights include a well-known reclining Buddha image and statues of numerous Hindu deities. An important national festival is held here annually in January - Duruthu Perah Toward Negombo and beyond: Visit the town to wander around the Fort, the roads with crumbling houses, the Hindu Kovils at pooja time, the grand churches, clothes and gift shop, experience the fruit and veg market, wholesale fish market and the beach fish market. Dutch Fort Gate Originally, built in 1672, not far from the coastline, the fort was part of a colonial prison complex. Today the fort itself is largely in ruin, but the gate with its date of construction inscribed on it is still visible. In addition to the fort ruins, there’s a lovely Dutch church nearby and other buildings around Negombo dating from this period. A bicycle ride on the path along the canal is a good way to see many of these colonial constructions. Dutch Canal The canal was at one time an important link in the transportation route which supplied the Dutch colonial administration. It runs for more than 60 miles, with part of the route running through Negombo. Today it’s an attraction for tourists.

West wind is such a gem!
West wind is such a gem!
We were lucky to stay in Marys house West wind for two weeks in january 2017. It was the best experience ever! Mary made everything to make us feel comfortable. The house is uniqe with all the colors, personal details and air. Nimanti and her family is the best hosts one can wish for and the location is by far the best we have stayed at on our journeys. Nimantis mother, Padma, is a five star cook. We had three meals per day that the the whole family enjoyed so much. We are travelling with three small kids and Padma made all she could to make them eat everything lankese food can offer, and succeeded! They loved it! Nimantis service level is something one should export to any service center. She made our stay so comfortable and easy. She helped us to arrange all excursions, suggested exciting day trips and introduced us to life in Sri Lanka. Her three children are our childrens friends for life. The are the best hosts, smart, well educated and fun! The house is located directly on the beach. You can not swim, unless you are a very experienced swimmer, but jump in the waves and Nimantis oldes son walked us to a rock pool where we coluld take a dip and play. We hope to be back soon. Very soon!

What an amazing place. We had such a great time relaxing here that it was hard to leave. We are traveling as a family for a year and arrived here travel weary and in need of a rest. The location is away from any busy tourist centre so we were able to find the peace we were looking for (yet it is still so conveniently close to the airport). Mary's staff looked after us so well. We felt so pampered during our one week stay. The food was amazing too! Thanks so much for opening your home to us!

West Winds is a beautiful house lived in and rented out by the owner, Mary. It is a 2nd home for her 11 grandchildren and as a result is a brilliant place for kids on holiday. Aside from the list of things above, there is a hammock that is big enough to seat four people and hundreds of books/games for kids. The housekeeper, Nimanthi has three wonderful children, who in August 2012 were 7, 5 and 1 year old. There are also two friendly dogs, two beautiful cats that like being stroked and lots of chickens. Our children liked this place so much it was hard to drag them to the Olympic sized swimming pool just 1.7km away at Jetwing Lagoon Hotel. Mary arranged for us to use this pool for 1500 rupees for the family per day ~£7.50. The pool is lovely, our 7 year old could touch the bottom, and plenty of wide steps make it safe for smaller kids as well. It's Sri Lanka and situated right on the beach, so the electricity is slightly temperamental, but armed with torches, the kids loved playing hide and seek in the dark a couple of times and lanterns are lit so the adults can still see to drink a chilled beer or coconut milk out of the shell. Being right on the beach also means that kids can play in the waves, catch crabs and look for shells for hours on end. Padma's cooking is better than anything you will get in a restaurant in town, expect to eat mountains of food, extremely well prepared, with excellent variety as well as attention to what the kids want. Nimanthi looked after us so well, and with her experience of working with Mary's family for over a decade, her English is excellent. Mahinda keeps the house looking immaculate, however, that does not mean that the house is like a collection of sanitised hotel rooms. It is a home filled with pictures, paintings, photos and Barefoot linens that make it very welcoming. Anil is on hand to drive you anywhere, any time, so it is very easy to go into Negombo 20 mins away (fish-market, souvenirs, gem shops (Rings & Things seems trustworthy), or further afield to Colombo just less than an hour away. Nimanthi and Anil can also arrange for you to go out on a fishing boat to the lagoon. If you're lucky you may spot a crocodile, if you're not lucky you'll still get to see lots of flying fish. In summary, this is a lovely home that it is a heaven for children to enjoy themselves in. This means that parents can spend their time relaxing, looked after by an excellent and welcoming team of people in a beautiful country.
