Alone Mill Schoolhouse - A paradise for outdoor lovers
About this house rental
Nestled in Rockbridge County, this charming house for $198 per night is a fantastic option for your next trip. Come experience the magic of Alone Mill! Canoe, bike, hike or just hang out by the creek! We are a 15 minute (6 mile) drive from Lexington, Virginia, home to Washington & Lee University, Virginia Military Institute and the Virginia Horse Center. Rockbridge County Virginia is home to the Maury River, the only river in Virginia that begins & ends in the same county. Spring, summer and fall are great times for running the whitewater in Goshen Pass or tubing the flat water into Lexington. Come to the country where you can stay up late, dazzled by the stars and the Milky Way. In the late fall & winter, enjoy our cozy cabin and a game of pool. After dark in June and July, the lightning-bug display is amazing every night! Later in the summer and fall, the tree frogs and cicadas fill the air with their songs. The cabin is right on a popular (and challenging) biking route. The School House is located within 300 yards of a river access point locally known as Alone Mill. Upstream is my personal favorite stretch of canoeing on the Maury, it's a peaceful 5 hour ride in slow water and can be as fast as 2 hours when the river is up! You can put in at Goshen or Rockbridge Baths and walk home from the take-out. If you're more interested in a bubbling stream, Alone Mill Creek passes within 50 feet of the front door! Rockbridge County also has thousands of acres of National Forest and State-managed land for hunting and hiking in the mountains. The cabin is within about 6 miles of access at Goshen Pass and other spots are equally close. Other activities at the School House include a pool table, ping pong, basketball goal and badmitton set. The yard is large and flat, perfect for a football game, and the driveway is flat also, good for the little kids to practice bike riding. A 1 mile walk will take you to weekend wine tasting at Lexington Valley Vineyard, one of several vineyards in the county. Keywords: House, Cabin, Guest House, Casita, Family Fun, River, Swimming Hole

Cool old school house that was transformed into a country cabin. Clean, well stocked, and in a very remote setting.
Would highly recommend

Great stay!

Very clean home. Spacious rooms and entertainment area. Great communication from owner. Very accommodating. The only gig was a musty smell when you enter, nothing overwhelming. The location is remote. You are within 15-20 minutes of Lexington but it is not an easy ride. If you know this up front, it is no issue, just an fyi.

There was so much unique character and history in this old schoolhouse. The setting was in the country with a little creek in the front yard. Although it was in a serene, quiet country setting Lexington was only 15 minutes away. Loved our stay!

Great for an off the beaten path vacation. Our little boys enjoyed outdoor space and the teenagers enjoyed the pool table.

We had a wonderful family vacation at the schoolhouse. There was plenty for all of us to do outside - the creek, the river, the basketball hoop, the fire pit, the grill and the two porches. Inside there was a pool/pingpong table, tv’s and great internet. The kitchen had everything we needed and the two bathrooms had plenty of towels and necessities. The laundry even had detergent. The back roads and country environment are gorgeous! Lexington was a great little town. Grocery shopping was very convenient. The owners were wonderful hosts. We would all love to return.

This vacation was an absolute delight for our family . Not only was the location perfect the house was just such a great fit for us and our golden retriever .We had a blast watching lightening bugs on the porch at night and enjoying our coffee out there in the morning. We all had fun playing ping pong and pool . Our son made a little nook watching tv while I read on the chaise lounge .
Each room was spacious and had plenty of fans . The kitchen was roomy and we were able to enjoy most meals at the house and conveniently clean up . We played games and ate meals at the spacious kitchen table .
The owners communicated promptly and were very helpful .
We spent hours on the river with our son and dog . The kids kayak was the perfect touch . We had a blast navigating and exploring the Maury . Having a washer and dryer was very helpful with bathing suits . The huge porches were great to leave water shoes and nets .
We brought large blankets for our dog and used a baby gate to keep him out of the carpeted part of the house once he went swimming . There was plenty of room for our dog and son to explore around the property and on the way to the river . We felt very safe with both our dog and son . This house allows pets but I never felt like another dog had been there , it was very clean .
This house was full of history , amenities and fun . We will be sure to go back again and explore the river with the kayak and tubes .

We had a fantastic stay at Alone Mill Schoolhouse! The house is converted from an old schoolhouse, but it was very clean and comfortable. Our boys loved playing in the little creek on the property. We weren't able to enjoy the river due to heavy rains making the river deeper than usual with a strong current, but it was easily accessible through the owners property across the street from the school house. There is a big yard, and it is on a quiet street. The owners are very responsive to messages, and were very helpful. It is about a 30 minute drive from the attractions in Natural Bridge. Our boys are already asking when we can come back!

Very nice, clean, welcoming. Terrific yard space for pup and games. A bit disappointed with grill (a balancing act with broken leg). Leg on dining table needs to be secured. A nice cabin, loved for sure, but needed a little attention.

We stayed with our three kids for three nights. The place was great and our kids loved playing in the stream on the property during the day and playing pool at night. Our only issue was the grass. The house sits on a large field and it had not been cut in quite a while so we had to go through 6-8 inch high grass to use the fire pit, get to the stream, or go to the actual river. This invariably led to a lot of ticks. We are an outdoors loving family so we are pretty practiced at tick checks but it did make the stay slightly less enjoyable as anytime the kids went outside, we had to do a full body tick check when they came back in. Otherwise the stay was great and we really enjoyed going into Lexington and down to the Natural Bridge and the VA Safari Park. We also appreciated the owners letting us check out an hour late so we weren't as rushed getting out in the morning. We would definitely go back if we ever needed to stay near Lexington again.

We had a pleasant time and the host was welcoming. The environment was clean but smelled a little musty and the windows were not cleaned so had lots of bugs and dust. Besides that we enjoyed our stay and would come again.

We had a great time staying at this property. Being from florida, the winding mountain roads were a little intimidating, but by the end of our trip I was driving them with confidence. We enjoyed the house! The kitchen was well stocked with dishes and basic necessities. The bathroom with a tub did not hold water, but we were able to find a rubber stopper cover in the drawer of that same bathroom which helped the next time we tried to give the baby a bath. The property was clean and the outdoors were great!

Great house, great property, great area.
The house and area were terrific for us. You are in the outskirts of town among the mountains and streams. It’s quiet and peaceful. It’s about 15 minutes from downtown.
We brought our dog- there was enough land for him to run free and we didn’t have to worry about cars on the road. He got to swim in the creek as well.

We loved the our stay at the cabin. It was peaceful and relaxing. The pups enjoyed the large yard to play in. If we are ever back in the area we will definitely see if the cabin is available.

Check in and out was very easy. The property was clean and stocked with everything we needed (towels, TP, etc.). We enjoyed playing in the stream next to the house and my husband loved fly fishing in the bigger river across the street. Lots of games and toys at the house to play with too. We took advantage of the basketball hoop and ball as well as balls with gloves there for guests. Thank you for a wonderful stay!!
FYI Ruby Tuesday does deliver food to this address.

As fun as camping but as comfortable as a house . Activities for all ages.

I came with two of my friends to fly fish and watch my daughters concert at W&L. The description of this charming schoolhouse said rustic so I knew going in that it was not going to be a typical hotel stay, but it exceeded my expectations. It was very clean, there were extra pillows, the beds were comfortable. It’s nestled in nature. With farms and old houses all around. The creek and walking paths just outside the house we’re an extra bonus for us. It reminded us of going to the school house on “Little house on the Prairie”

We had a wonderful time at this historic little cabin. The weather was a little grey, but we couldn't have had a better place to cosy up on the porch and listen to the rain. And my dog loved walking around the beautiful creek bed and forest that surround.

Perfect alternative to staying in Lexington. Very spacious and quiet. There were only two of us, but we would definitely like to return with a larger group and fully utilize the outdoor space.

The schoolhouse rental was perfect for our 10 year Alumni Reunion at VMI. This unit was exactly like the presentation on VRBO. We enjoyed our time here for a long weekend and look forward to the next reunion. Thanks for a relaxing, peaceful and quiet weekend.

This was our first time staying in this house and we’d like to say it won’t be the last! Charles and Sarah were very responsive to any question I had. We’ve rented vacation homes from VRBO in the past, but I and my family agreed it was the nicest house we stayed in. When we walked in we immediately noticed how clean the rooms were. There is a pool/ping pong table which used every day. The property is beautiful and quiet, and is the perfect place for a getaway.

We spent most of our time on the Maury river doing some whitewater kayaking. Found some decent rapids even though the water level was low. There is easy access to the Maury river from Alone Mill. The property was clean and as advertised. Perfect location for those looking to do recreational activities on the water. Goshen's pass has some breath taking views if you get the opportunity to go up river a few miles. I enjoyed reading about the Civil War history of the area. Also loved reading the guest book of all the people that have stayed there over the years. The house has an interesting history as it used to be a school. Several of the people who signed the guest book knew family or friends that attended the school. Property is very close to beautiful downtown Lexington. We really enjoyed Backbone Brewery which is only 10-15 minutes away. The owners were very responsive and accomodating. They helped us with planning kayaking routes and monitoring water levels of the Maury. Make sure you READ the welcome packet! Pretty much every detail you will ever need is in there including great running, hiking and rafting routes. I asked the homeowner a few questions that could have easily been answered had I read the welcome packet right away. Alone Mill is a hidden gem. Thank you so much! -Jeff

The property was so cute and quite. Are family loved it. I do wish there was more pictures.
Do wish the creek in the pictures was on the property.

Peaceful location
Nice location to disconnect from the day-to-day. Large and secluded property. Close enough to Lexington to get to town quickly yet far enough to feel remote. Hosts were responsive to answer questions in advance of our visit. Upon arrival, they are generous to allow access across their personal property for river access. The schoolhouse is rustic and provided all the basics.

Fantastic mountain retreat!
We had a fantastic time at the schoolhouse. It’s comfortable and peaceful while being well supplied and well situated for day trips around the Lexington area.

Memorable vacation
We had a wonderful, relaxing time with our family. Our son and daughter were excited to be able to take a boat out onto the river and catch a fish. My grandma taught in that school and my mother attended, then my grandparents rented it after it was no longer a schoolhouse, so it was a great trip up memory lane. Even if you don’t have family connections, it’s a great family vacation spot.

Great, relaxing spot with kids and friends
Our kids loved the stream and all the athletic equipment. We grownups loved the well-stocked kitchen and generous supply of towels. Though the a/c is provided by window units we stayed mostly cool despite the late June heat (the only exception being the small back bedroom, but we did have four kiddos squeezed in there!). Would definitely stay there for the Gravista in other years.

We enjoyed our time. Place was comfortable. Our family enjoyed the pool table and badminton. We also enjoyed the river. We had great time as a family
