Thoroughly enjoyed a peaceful, relaxing stay at the Mango Cottage. It is steps away from the ocean for great swimming and snorkeling. Cottage was clean and comfortable, and enjoyed the using the outdoor shower. I especially enjoyed the delicious Kona coffee. Great place for a quiet couple's getaway. Looking forward to staying here on my next visit to the Big Island. Thank you!

Another great stay in Puako. Our favorite cottage!

Overall nice and did the job for us. The neighborhood is gorgeous. But only the main bedroom has air conditioning, though the listing states "air conditioned." Since the rest of the cottage receives only natural ventilation through the screened clerestory, we had to rely on the ceiling fans. We were fine, especially since the weather was very mild during our early April stay, but others may not be comfortable. We had a problem with baby spiders looking for food in the kitchen. We managed them, and since we were only staying for four nights it wasn't a big deal, but other guests may object. The indoor shower needs an overhaul - it works - barely. The lack of glass in the clerestory meant we could hear the neighbors and the vehicles - sometimes too well. Because the road is a shore access, it's faily busy, and some of the vehicles are LOUD - I thought I was back in Indiana. :-) We met and talked to Scott briefly when we arrived - he's very friendly! We didn't approach him about our issues, because for our short stay, and only using the cottage for sleeping and breakfast, it wasn't worth the fuss, but someone wanting to stay for a longer period and use the cottage more may want to consider these issues. Otherwise, recommended!

We Love everything about Mango cottage. Scott is a great host. The Cottage is in a beautiful neighborhood, clean, and has everything you need. My husband and son surfed right out front daily ( little swell when we where there.) We all enjoyed the snorkeling, diving, and the tide pools right across the street, and many other beaches by walking the coast trails. This property is a true Puako gem. We would move in if we could!

Everything you need, from bbq to baking soda. The amazing Puako beach for waves, turtles, snorkeling, family fun across the street. A cozy welcoming feel from the lights in the garden/lanai and that laid back Hawaiian aloha.

I rarely write reviews, but felt inclined because the cottage offered us a perfect getaway at a desirable shorefront area near all the premier resorts. It had all the amenities and more- including beach chairs, umbrella, snorkel gear that can be borrowed. We are already thinking about when we can return.

Mango Cottage had everything we needed. It’s quiet because it’s nearly at the end of the street. We loved being able to cross the street and watch the turtles in the rock pools. Sad to leave it!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage and would consider staying again in the future. It's quite remote without a lot of frills, though, but great for a quiet home-base off the beaten path. For us, the NEGATIVES were very minor, but other renters might want to consider: ---Lots of tiny (almost microscopic) ants. While you can't get away from bugs in Hawaii - and while there weren't any of the larger pests that are fairly well known - the ants were omni-present on kitchen counters, in the shower, etc., if there were any crumbs or other "gradoo" present. ---Kitchen was tiny. Fine if you eat most meals out, like us, but could be challenging if you want to make a lot of meals ---Hot water was not very hot, and the inside shower was tiny. We resorted to using the very private and much larger outdoor shower (a bit tough at night, though, and still just barely hot enough). *One bedroom is nicely air conditioned, but the rest of the cottage, including the other bedroom, is not. There is decent cross-ventilation, fans, etc., but the non-A/C areas took a while to cool down in the evening. *Being near the end of a 10-minute dead-end road requires some planning ahead on outings, to minimize trips back to the cottage in between activities. Keeping the above points in mind, the POSITIVES were great for us: ***The rate was really very affordable, especially compared to what area hotel rates have become in the last year or so. ***Puako is a great little community, with one road, one apartment/condo building, only one or two businesses, awesome oceanfront homes, and several shoreline-access points. ***The closest ocean access from the cottage is pretty much right across the street (maybe about 100 feet at most down the road). It is a large area of oceanfront access - mostly rocky but with some partially sandy areas. It has some great snorkeling (on some lists of best snorkeling areas on the island) - Scott (who manages the rental) can tell you just how the find the easier points to enter the water. Also great sunsets! ***Puako is also near the best sandy beaches on the big island, tucked in between the major Kohala resort areas, just a few minutes to Kawaihae, with a few shops and eating choices and relatively convenient to the towns up the hills - Waimea, Waikoloa Village, and Hawi. In summary, we heartily recommend this rental to anyone looking for a quiet Hawaiian getaway.

No need to drive to Puako Petroglyph Park. Exit the cottage driveway turning left, cross the street and begin your shoreline hike. Trail to the petroglyphs is accessed through Holoholokai Beach Park. Be aware that you'll be crossing luxury resorts, golf courses, and private homes bordering the trail to Waikoloa. Return to your cozy cottage at the end of the day and relax in air conditioned comfort.

This is such a great place. Location is amazing. Would love to stay here again but for a longer period of time.

It’s all about location! You could walk across the street to swim with the sea turtles! The house is surrounded by mango trees, that fall when ripe. Great place!!

Overall the experience was excellent. However there was a few things that could of been better. Only one dish towel was provided. Perhaps two or three dishtowels and a couple of towels to wipe counters down would have been nice. Wiping counters with a scrubby sponge and paper towels was inefficient. We found the lighting in the rear bedroom to be too dim. Some brighter lights with a dimmerswitch would solve that problem. Last but not least I found the vrbo website could use some improvement. I found the check in process annoying. I tapped on the area for my electronic key and it put me back to the vrbo site and asked me for password. I didn't want to go to the vrbo website I wanted to talk to my host and get the lowdown about the accommodations. More human interaction and less electronic interface would be nice. The snorkeling there was fabulous and we really enjoyed the sunsets each night. Here you feel so far away from the hustle and bustle but are a short walk down the beach to the Fairmont Orchid if you want to splurge on breakfast. We absolutely loved everything about this place and only wish we could have stayed longer.

It would be nice if there were blinds or shades behind them so the beauty could still be observed through the sheer curtains, but the blinds could be drawn when privacy is needed.
