This beautiful holiday home with its old-world charm is situated in the village of Carracastle, midway between Charlestown and Ballaghaderreen (4 miles from each) on the Mayo/Roscommon border. This stunning renovated cottage, which dates back over 200 years old, has three large bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen. The cottage has mystical charm, is on its own spacious grounds and is close to a church, shops, a post office and a local pub. Set back in a peaceful and scenic location the house can accommodate seven people and has all modern facilities. The house is accessible to the disabled and has two bathrooms with shower/baths -with one an en-suite. There is a playground with swings/slide and spacious grounds. Includes a fuel stove, fuel costs extra **Cot available upon request** Location Carracastle is located just inside the County Mayo border and is very convenient for touring the west of Ireland. It is five minutes drive from Charlestown and Ballaghadereen, 10 minutes drive from Ireland West Airport Knock, 15 minutes drive from Knock Shrine, 25 minutes drive from Claremorris and Castlebar, a 40 minutes drive from Westport and a 30 minute drive from Sligo, Ballina, Boyle and Carrick on Shannon. Touring Carracastle is within easy reach of Knock Shrine, Castlebar, Ballina, Westport, Roscommon, Boyle, Sligo and Enniscrone on the Atlantic Coast, while Galway and Donegal are just over a one hour drive away. A day trip to Westport by car offers a fantastic variety of destinations for all tastes. Clew Bay and Louisburgh just outside the west Mayo town offer a multitude of beautiful, jaw-dropping scenery, while the 42km Greenway is the longest off-road walking and cycling trail in Ireland. The Greenway traverses Ireland’s Atlantic coast between Westport town and Achill Island and visits the picturesque villages of Newport and Mulranny (Mallaranny). It passes by some of the West of Ireland’s most dramatic mountains and offers magnificent views of Clew Bay and its many islands There are a variety of historical and cultural sites including- Croagh Patrick, Westport House (Which has lots of attractions for kids) the Ceide Fields, Ballintubber and Kylemore Abbeys, Knock Shrine, Rockfleet Castle, Foxford Woollen Mills, the National Famine Monument at Murrisk. This is a an area of living history: rich in Stone, Bronze and Iron Age antiquities, as well as early Christian sites. There is also a high concentration of ancient burial monuments around the county. The scenery becomes ever more spectacular as you explore. Drive towards Newport and Mulranny or Louisburgh and Doolough. The Céide Fields of Mayo have exposed 2,000 acres of stone walled fields built over hills and valleys with a unique interpretative centre. There are mountains, lakes and sea, even islands as Achill is connected to the mainland. Wet day or dry day, you'll find plenty to do. Archaeology Carracastle has at least 20 Pre-historic Forts in the area. Stone and Earthen Forts are noted in a book on Carracastle published by the late local historian Vincent Coleman. On Lough Gara there are Crannogs dotted along the Lough - these are man-made stone islands built over 3,000 years ago.
