About this house rental

Situated in Sarlat-la-Caneda, this charming house for $155 per night is a great option for your next trip. The lodging of the Commandery is located in the small hamlet of La Canéda (former commandery of the Templars). It is an independent house of 110 m2 for 2 to 4/6 people with terrace, courtyard and garden of 750 m2. Attached to a 12th century church classified as a historic monument and which is hardly used any more, this atypical very old house is steeped in history: it sheltered templars, became presbytery then simple house of residence. Its very careful renovation harmoniously combines old and modern spirit. On the ground floor, the house consists of a fully equipped kitchen open to the dining room with access to the garden where you will find a vegetable patch with aromatic herbs (thyme, parsley, mint, chives, rosemary ... ) and a living room with a small cave equipped with cushions. A stone and wood staircase will lead you to the large mezzanine on the first floor including a sofa bed (sleeping 140x200) and cozy little corners. It gives access to a large bedroom with a 160x200 bed and a fireplace. The bathroom with Italian shower is located on this floor and opens onto a small terrace facing south. A beautiful iron and wood staircase will lead you to a smaller mezzanine. It is a pleasant reading area with a library available as well as board games. It opens onto the second bedroom equipped with a 180x200 bed that can be transformed into 2 90x200 beds. Both bedrooms are air conditioned and the bedding is new and comfortable. Sheets, towels and kitchen are provided. Beds are made upon arrival. The two mezzanines overlook the common wall of the church. The old door giving access to the church, the sundial on the bathroom wall, the small cave in the living room will invite you to go back in time. The house has an independent stone utility room with direct access to the garden. It includes a washing machine, a tumble dryer, a clothes horse, a WC and a sink. the surrounding environment      The place is quiet. The hamlet is crisscrossed by 4 very narrow streets lined with beautiful stone houses. The car is highly recommended to allow you to travel the region and discover all its treasures. Free parking is located 10m from the house. At 50 m, a shuttle will take you to the historic center of Sarlat (about 4 km) which is very significant, parking in July and August in Sarlat is sometimes difficult. A nearby farm will allow you to get fresh eggs. Near Visit of Sarlat, medieval treasure, you will be conquered by its architecture, its streets, its market, its gastronomy. Medieval castles (Beynac, Castelnaud ...) The different caves (prehistoric caves, concretion caves ...) Swimming, canoeing on the Dordogne (about 4 km)  Bike path at 800m

We were equally impressed by the physical attributes of the property as the VRBO’s picture’s portrayed.. Annie was a knowledgeable host who gave us suggestions of what to visit, what restaurants to frequent and where to shop. The property was well cared for and lived up to our expectations. The rural setting provided us with a peaceful haven but close enough to easily make day trips to impressive sites - Sarlat, Lascaux, Bergerac to explore life today as well as the archeological history of the area.

Exactly what was needed for a relaxing holiday. The property is located 5 minutes away from the lovely town of Sarlat la Caneda. On arrival we were met by Christine who showed us around the beautiful property. She didn't speak English and our French was very basic but that did not prove an issue at all. The property has everything you need with the added intrigue of having a Templar history (try and find the secret passage. We couldn't but we did find the sun dial and Templar tattoo). Being attached to the bedrock of the church, the temperature was perfect even in the 40C heat. Both bedrooms have air conditioning too. Annie the host was perfect. Lots of advice of where to go, where to eat (all the best boulangeries) and gave us the full history of the house. No question was unanswered and you know she loves the area. The location was perfect, caves, chateaux, the Dordogne all within 30 minutes. (We didn't meet the resident owl but were definitely aware it was present :) I have no hesitation in recommending this property

Sejour décévant dans une maison en partie troglodyte
Sejour décévant dans une maison en partie troglodyte
We had high expectations for this vacation rental home but we were very disappointed. Although the house has been renovated and I was pleased to learn about the history of the church, there were many issues that made our stay so unpleasant that we decided to leave three days early and stay in a hotel for the rest of our vacation. The first issue was the fact that the kitchen was dirty and we had to spend several hours cleaning after our arrival. We also noticed right away a strong smell in the downstairs area where the kitchen and the living room are located. This smell was in the “cave part” of the room. The smell was so strong that we avoided staying in that room during our stay. Finally, upon arrival also we were told that the WIFI had been knocked out two days before due to a storm. The owner said that she tried to call Orange several times to reestablish service but we never saw a technician, and the Internet was still out on the day of our departure 12 days later. The cable TV also went out after a few days and we only had one channel on the TV. The owner did provide us with an airbox from Orange but that did not work with our phone. In the end we decided to end our rental early due to the smell and the lack of WIFI. Based on my experience, I would not recommend renting this home.
