Good place to stay as an overnight stop between north and south or if travelling with your dog. Or for longer to explore the Peaks. Located at the top of Matlock town. Very steep hills - just to be aware. The rooms are old stables converted into seperate rooms at the back of the pub. Quiet and private with a nice bit of space outside to sit . Big car park, free. Pub next door! And pub garden. Which wasn’t noisy at all. Own bathroom and kettle with TV - very basic standard, no luxury but good value for money. Second time I’ve stayed there and will again. The cooked breakfast was useful - it’s ten pounds extra- but on reflection we should have explored the many lovely cafes down the hill instead. The cappuccino was clearly from a sachet mix, just so you know if you are fussy! They’d be better off just buying a cafetière and not offering cappuccino at all, I reckon. Anyway overall it’s a good place to stay with a pet, they also have a wheelchair accessible room and it’s convenient for exploring around Matlock if you don’t mind the hill. A good overnight stopping point if you don’t want to spend a lot and just need a place to sleep.
Compared to when I last stayed a few years ago, the rooms could do with a lick of paint and a bit of updating. Especially the bathroom.
The breakfast was very average. The coffee was bad, sorry to say…those sachets…! Couldn’t drink it.
The younger bar staff were helpful and friendly but the older couple who seem to run it don’t crack a smile at all. So that was fun at breakfast time when it was just us and them….

Individual rooms in the grounds so no bar chatter noise. Excellent food and the two main deal for £18 was great value as the meal was not compromised by the price and the breakfast was excellent too.
Walking to town was difficult due to the location being at the top of a very steep hill. You need transport or taxi. No iron, hair dryer or toilet brush supplied and could do with a few more coat hangers

Nice room in separate block to pub. Quiet location. 10-15 minute walk into town downhill. Bus stop right outside. Freindly people and nice food at pub. Great views
Room could have been a bit cleaner. Needs a bit of updating. Long uphill walk back
