The hotel was fairly convenient for our onward journey to Portsmouth ferry terminal.
It appeared online like an old coaching inn/pub restaurant and so we were expecting good hospitality and a warm welcome.
Breakfast was plentiful and pretty decent although the sausages weren’t of a high standard.
There were numerous things we felt disappointed at:
1) Yes, we’d booked budget accommodation but that shouldn’t mean shoddy paint jobs and marks all over the wall next to the doorway. Greasy handprints maybe. In fact the hotel itself was of a poor standard considering it’s a heritage asset. Looks like it’s straight out the 1980s
2) There was a wedding on at the time of our stay so we couldn’t comfortably access the bar area until later in the evening as we felt like we were intruding. We recognise that the business needs to be viable, but perhaps explain this could occur on the overview of the property.
3)Staff didn’t appear overly welcoming, lacking smiles and a greeting. I’d pressed the reception bell 3 times before someone appeared. Perhaps under duress at the wedding that was occupying and more staff needed to accommodate it (I’m guessing that, not necessarily fact).
4) It’s just not worth the price asked. I wouldn’t stay not stay again.
