Schaffhausen Youth Hostel

This was the perfect place to stay to visit Schaffhausen and the Rhine Falls, both convenient and affordable. The building is absolutely gorgeous, and historically fascinating, tucked into a small woodland, about 15 mins walk up from Schaffhausen station (those with heavy luggage the excellent no. 7 bus goes straight to the door in a few mins - and on to the Rhine Falls). There's a good sized communal sitting area, large dining/breakfast room, and outdoor tables - as well as use of a tennis court, table tennis table, and fussball. The vibe is peaceful and relaxed, not a party place - with a full range of guests from solo travellers, students, groups of friends, families with children, and retirees. The staff member I met on arrival and departure (Tiana) was lovely - very approachable and happy to help with any questions. The bunk beds are basic, but comfortable - you are provided a bedding pack on arrival (sheet, pillowcase and duvet cover) with which you make your own bed. Towels are extra. The breakfast in the morning was very good - lots of options - and they provide an affordable dinner option too, although I didn't use it.

The bedroom facilities are very basic compared to some more up to date hostels in Europe. The bunk beds are lightweight wooden ones, with no privacy curtains, and tipped dangerously when climbing down. There is no air conditioning, so with the recent heatwave windows needed to be open, but that meant mosquitos (bring insect repellent, or be a bug buffet). The lockers are small, and require swiss francs to operate, rather than a padlock - I had no currency, and it was too small for my backpack anyway. Everyone left their bags by their beds. The mixed gender bathroom on the first floor was challenging - being used by several rooms, with only two shower stalls and two toilets. I found myself waiting for a while to shower, while also being mindful of the women using the space. In the morning it was full of insects from the night before. Breakfast finishes at 9am, and checkout is by 10am, which is earlier than most.

The location is perfect and the property itself is really nice.

It would have been good to have fans during warm summer days.
