Clean, close to castle and town and excellent breakfast - very nice staff

The Hotel Sekisuien is an upscale hotel high on a hill leading towards Gujo Hachiman castle. The rooms are exceptionally large by Japan standards and the soaking tub in our room was a welcome addition after walking around town and up to the castle. The multi-course breakfast was delicious. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Limited shuttle service between the town center and highway bus stop was a plus.
Although the hotel sits high on the hill leading to the castle, it has only obstructed views of the castle roof and the town below (albeit there are partial views of the surrounding mountain).
The biggest limitation is that there is no walk-in restaurant on site or in the immediate vicinity so the only option, unless you reserve the kaiseki dinner in advance, is to walk down or take a taxi into town and then back again. If the weather is bad, as it was for us due to a passing typhoon, your choices are extremely limited.
Overall, the hotel is an upscale option but, in our opinion, better value can be found closer to the town center.
