This is one of the best places I have stayed at in Asia. It is within walking distance (7 minutes) from Pidurangala rock. My family and I have rented a treehouse and a bungalow. Both are very comfortable with good beds (including mosquito nets), a mini fridge and an open-air bathroom. The treehouse was a wonderful experience because the area teems with wildlife. In the early morning, we could hear the birds start singing nearby. One night (at 3 am), a small group of elephants passed by our treehouse. There were also a porcupine, a calling Brown Wood Owl, several mouse deer (chevrotain) and slender loris in the area. The staff was very helpful and flexible. They arranged a gorgeous birthday diner for me and my family. The staff naturalist was well-informed and helped us find suitable excursions to see wildlife. I highly recommend Back of Beyond - Jungle Hideaway, Pidurangala to couples and families with children.

Loved our treehouse!! The beds were lovely and comfy with good nets and a big cupboard you could lock things that monkeys may want to check out, but at our stay they didn’t make an entrance. The bathroom at the bottom was also lovely and very tastefully decorated in a natural setting. We had hot water and good water pressure. The staff were friendly and the breakfast omlette was very tasty as were the pancakes. The dinner was also tasty just not enough. We asked if they had more but it looked like there wasn’t more as they seemed to not hear the request. The first night my husband had only 3 prawns for his prawn curry. We did the Loris Tour and enjoyed it and did see some, what funny looking creatures!

If you want forest idyllic this then this is not the place and I would go their sister place. This is close to the road noise as goes direct to Pidurangala Rock and a village that seemed to be partying during a festival period when we were there and the wild barking dogs who also seemed to be having a party night, but the second night was quieter. We did choose it though for the closeness to the rock as you can walk there and for the Sigiriya Rock sunrise and the national park safari as it was perfect for all three and we did love the tree house experience. Saw so many elephants on the Safari! Highly recommend Minneriya!

Great location for Lion and Pidurangala Rock. Very close to elephant safari too! Unique experience to camp outside with wildlife. The monkeys came into our hut and were friendly and funny. The sounds of nature at night are beautiful!

3 wild dogs sleep on the stairs of the hut we stayed in (what must be most nights!). They were growling at us when we arrived at night and proceeded to scrape the gate at the top of our stairs at the end of our bed and whimper all night to try get into our room which made us scared to use the toilet. They barked on our stairs for over an hour straight at 1am and we kept waking up thinking that they had gotten through the gate at the end of our bed.
