Amazing stay! A great look into the Tibetan culture.
Although we went there during the summer, the weather in Shangri-La was rather cold. The moment we entered the reception though they greeted us very warmly and gave us some hot ginger tea and biscuits. They even upgraded us when we were there! We met a lady named Rose from the housekeeping who was very sweet and incredibly helpful. She gave us her contact so that we could ask for anything we needed at any time and she would personally bring it over with a smile on her face and a toy for our kids. Our second day there was her day off, we weren’t aware of this so we still contacted her for anything we needed and she happily helped us by relaying our requests to her coworkers. We would like to see her again. We also met Miss Ama there from the breakfast area who was very nice and helpful as well as the entire staff including the golf cart drivers. She explained to us a little bit about the Tibetan culture and why all of the houses (including the ones in Banyan Tree) were all so similar as they followed certain traditions such as the bathroom won’t be on the same floor that we eat food or go to bed and the number of planks on the roof. It was a beautiful stay in Shangri-La. We’ll never forget.

Disappointing. Do not recommend.
The surrounding area is beautiful. Though there are plenty of other choices in Shangri-La. Some of the staff, especially the guys driving the buggies are very friendly and trying their best to help; some staff at the restaurant are helpful.
Is this a fake Banyan Tree? We didn't leave early due to booking conditions. 1. Poor hygiene standards. Corners and floors are covered in dusts and spider webs (both inside the room and outdoor). Furniture and curtains are stained and dated. It is worse than the hostels. 2. No training was provided to staff was the biggest problem. A woman in causal clothes and sport cap (no uniform) abruptly got into our room with her shoes on to do turndown service (we knew because we had to ask what she was doing in our room!); she ran directly to the bathroom downstairs and walked straight-out. We thought she was lighting up the oil burner, but only found one extra incense was left on the table. She didn't bother to leave any matches or add any oil, let alone emptying bins or replacing towels! Another time a technician came into the room to help fixing the TV, again with his shoes on, but left because he didn't know how to fix it! There were a couple of time we asked for extra towels as kids had altitude sickness, it took a long time to arrive, but that wasn't really the main issue. What bothered us was each time staff rang the bell like fire emergency even at late night (after 10pm) when they arrived. Room service in general took a long time. Once we waited for so long and had to step outside to wait. Eventually found a staff carried a tray from the restaurant lost in the hotel premises. She said that she didn't know where the room was. We had to explain to her the layout of the hotel! (The hotel only had 19 rooms/villas?!) 3. Low quality standards of the bathroom and furniture. The 'beds' are just super soft mattresses put on the floor. This is not a big problem if the hotel could have kept up with the service and maintenance. But clearly it is not the case. 4. For the luxury amount space, the hotel didn't bother to do any extra little effort. How about a small library, kids corner, or at least TV that works?

Depends on whether you've tried such type of hotel and the price.
the hotel is in a small village where is tranquil. Room has 2 floors. You stay at the upper floor and clean up in the lower floor, the decoration is good. but if people don't like traditional tibet style, might feel a bit uncomfortable due to it's quiet dark within it. but i like it sitll. the tibet incense and traditional bathtub are my favorite part
location is not good. out of the town, have to go through a very narrow path to reach. and not convinent to grab something to eat if you miss the meal time without informing hotel to prepare for you.
