Helpful staff was the standout for this hostel. It had all the basic ingredients for a good functional hostel, but the staff was very helpful and accommodated my late arrival with bike.
It was a bit run down, bathrooms, showers could use some attention.

I am a single male, professional (secondary teacher), 63 years old, who lives very simply as often as possible. I booked here on a whim and found the experience to completely meet my expectations.
There is a diversity of nationalities that I really liked: last night I shared my 6 bunk room with Muslim and German men, and gained from the experience. Truly, most men across all ethnicities, cultures and beliefs want basically the same things, the same kinds of experiences, which includes things like peace and quiet for good sleeping/rest blended with the occasional bit of excitement when on a trip of any kind.
So, I slept well - top single bunk - and truly hope that I didn't snore loud enough to keep everyone else awake.
One point: there were no women anywhere in the hostel - at all - and that's worth remembering when booking.
Plus the place was full which could affect some people who aren't used to dealing with being surrounded by crowds 24/7
You're right in the CENTRE of town in one of the most picaresque towns in NZ, all within walking distance, so it's well worth experiencing at least once as a solo male traveler. There are heaps and heaps of opportunities for Instagram pics and such like, all within walking distance
30 second walk to the large local library too which is open 7 days a week, 9.30am to 4pm
Parking in the city centre is free at the weekends!!!! Bonus!!!
Nothing - it couldn't have been better for the money I paid.
