Had a great stay at Joanne's house.
Staying at the property feels like living in a tropical garden. A truly unique place.
The location is very close to a couple of outstanding beaches, grocery stores, and many good restaurants (the service everywhere is super slow, allocate 2 to 3 hours for a dinner). The beach chairs are provided, although there is no cooler to take to the beach. The car is a must of course and an SUV is preferred, not so much for the roads but to bring beach chairs to the beaches as some of the chairs are not foldable.
The apartment is spacious for a family of 4 and provides all the necessary amenities. The A/C (in the bedrooms only) work great. The living room/kitchen/dining areas can get a bit warm though. There are no washer and dryer but Joanne provides towel service when requested.
Joanne is a superb host, very accommodating and is ready to help with any question or concern you might have. She will go above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable.

This is the second time we have stayed here and it was even better then the first. Joanne is the best! We only had a few days due to schedule and Joanne gave us a list of all the new places since the last time we were there so we could maximize our stay. Already thinking of our next stay.

This property was divine. The vibe was just relaxing and laid back. We spent as much time as possible in the garden and pool. It was as if in a world all by yourself. Joanne has done an amazing job with the grounds, making it secluded and lots of comfortable sitting areas in garden and by pool. Kitchen well stocked and beds comfortable. Joanne gave the best recommendations. Would visit this property again and again.

Stayed 11 nights at Bamboo Cottage, really beautiful property and amazing garden. The host Joanne was very welcoming and very helpful with what to do on the island, best places to etc. Would definitely go back there, is best to hire a car but as restaurants and beach not too far hiring a taxi would be good too.

The property is lovely and well appointed, situated in a breathtaking garden with a great pool. The ac keeps the bedrooms cool while the house is beautifully shaded with a through-breeze that keeps it fresh and comfortable. Joanne is kind, accommodating, flexible and helpful. Beautiful, tropical garden and fabulous host
We had a magical stay in Antigua at Joanne's Bamboo Garden. It is a beautiful garden with a lovely well kept private pool. The house has everything you need, comfortable beds, air con in the bedrooms and a lovely relaxed feel. The house is well located within 10 minutes of English Harbour (by car).
Joanne was extremely helpful and made us feel very welcome. We had a wonderful stay and would like to like to visit again. Thank you Joanne for helping make our trip so special.

Oasis in Antigua
Call it oasis, call it paradise, call it haven. It’s all true. This is what ‘Bamboo Garden’ really is. Joanne created this lush beautiful sanctuary in the middle of nowhere, but close enough to everywhere you want to go. Highly recommended this peaceful place to come back to after exploring the island, spending a day at the beach, or just hanging out and relax by the pool.
PS
I wouldn’t recommend D’s car rental. There’re many other reliable car rental agencies on the island.

Our family of four really enjoyed our stay at the Bamboo Garden! The grounds are lovely and well kept and staying in the house gives you the feel of a traditional Caribbean cottage will all of the modern amenities. The photo's accurately reflect the actual cottage well. Joanne was a very helpful with advice and suggestions regarding what to do / see and potential places to eat while in Antigua, but also let us have our own space. Thank you Joanne for sharing your amazing garden with us and for suggesting the Xtreme Boat tour, it was one of the highlights of the trip! We will definitely return should we visit Antigua again.

The Bamboo Garden has all the amenities we needed. It was just right for a family of 4. Joanne is an amazing host. Upon arrival during the week of Christmas, we were greeted with a platter of fruits, cheeses, crackers, pitas and homemade hummus. She also provided us with a bottle of wine, a couple of beers and sorrel. The house is spacious with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The beds came equipped with mosquito nets, not that we really needed them. Each room had a remote air conditioning, ceiling fans and standing fans. The second room, contained 2 beds (one queen sized and one single). The kitchen is fully equipped with all the items you would need to prepare meals, as we cooked everyday. There was also a picnic basket which we used to carry to the beach with us. Pigeon beach is an amazing beach in the English Harbour. Be sure to check it. We didn’t rent a car as we were apprehensive driving on the other side of the road and it helped that Joanne connected us with a taxi driver named Jason who was very helpful and very responsive. I added him on WhatsApp and he was always available immediately. If he was not available to take us to our destination, he would make sure that another taxi was available to pick us up. It’s $10 USD to get us to Pigeon Beach and back. The house also has a nice patio with a hammock. The pool was also a nice treat! Joanne keeps a bookshelf full of books that I was able to take advantage of. This place is honestly a paradise retreat. You can tell that Joanne put in a lot of work into it, lots of plants and trees that surround it! It’s very private - although there is another structure on the property (cottage) and there was a couple staying there, we didn’t even see them because of all the trees that covered both houses. Joanne keeps a greenhouse and turtles in the adjacent lot. Be sure to keep your food scraps in another bin that you’re provided with as these will be fed to her turtles. I can’t say enough about this place other than I’m sure we will be back! Joanne, thanks so much - from Tina, Adisa, Aidan and Cristina from Toronto,

Great place to stay!!
We, two couples, stayed in Joanne’s beautiful place for a week in August. Joanne was great, couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating and the house, garden and pool were terrific. We spent most afternoons in the pool before trying out local places for dinner. Thank you Joanne for making our stay enjoyable. Please visit us when you next come to New Zealand.

Wounderful
As we drove up the driveway we were a bit unsure as it was a bit rough, but once we stepped inside the gates our jaw hit the floor. The entire setup is beyond belief, it is as if you had your own resort just to yourself! I can not say enough about how great the place was. Joanne is always available without being intrusive. I will 100% return here and wish I was there now!

Wonderful stay in Antigua
Bamboo Gardens is an idyllic spot. The large porch looks out on a fantastic garden and pristine swimming pool. (The jasmine was just coming into bloom when we were there and the fragrance was lovely). The rooms are nicely furnished with comfortable beds in each of the two bedrooms. The kitchen is adequately equipped for cooking (and grilling outside) which is good since restaurants in the area are somewhat pricey. Finding the place for the first time was somewhat challenging but when we arrived Joanne had left a pitcher of delicious rum punch and a platter of hummus, crackers and fruit. Joanne was very friendly and very knowledgable about the island. The humming bird feeder on the porch attracts lots of humming and other pretty birds. The local tortoise population provides for an unusual but efficient food scrap disposal.

A little piece of heaven.
Everything that everyone has written about Bamboo Garden is true but even better. We are two older, very active cousins from New England, and we have fallen in love with the house and the island. It really is the perfect place. An oasis of beauty and relaxation. Joanne has created a little piece of heaven. The house is charming, great kitchen,
Beds, and the porch is where you will want to spend your time. We felt very safe on the island and drove everywhere. Catherine’s beach restaurant is a must. I can’t think of a more wonderful spot for relaxing or adventure. Zip lining was a hoot.

An oasis of tranquility on a fabulous island
We were two couples, staying in the two bedroom property for a week in February - our second visit to Antigua but our friends' first visit. Bamboo Garden is set back from the main road along a fairly bumpy track (not untypical for the island - don't expect perfectly surfaced roads anywhere and especially on side roads!). We had a rented Jeep for the week so it was no problem to drive, but we also walked to and from the property several times - take a torch if intending to walk in the dark.
The property itself is set within large and totally secure gardens which Joanne, the owner, has created over the past few decades and are absolutely stunning. Most of the garden and certainly the house is beautifully shady and therefore relatively cool, but there is always a spot around the pool to sunbathe in. The small pool is lovely and clean. The setting is so tranquil, the night air is filled with only the wonderful sounds of the local tree frogs and other wildlife. The house itself is fabulous - clean, homely, well-equipped and there was a delicious welcome platter, some cold beers and a jug of rum punch in the fridge for our arrival!
Both bedrooms had ceiling fans and these were quite adequate to keep the bedrooms cool - likewise the living room. The verandah was a perfect place to eat meals, relax and chat or lie on the hammock with a book. Joanne lives on the first floor and was often available to offer advice about anything we needed. The pet tortoises and Joanne's dogs were charming and the dogs (mostly in the separate self-contained garden) were an extra security reassurance.
There are some restaurants/bars within easy walking distance (Papa's by the Sea is fabulous), but the walk into English Harbour where most bars and restaurants are is about a 20-30 minute walk - and that feels further in the heat of the day. A taxi for 4 into EH was ECD $20 each way, so not very expensive. Buses also seem to take you anywhere you want.
Joanne was a great hostess, communication was excellent, the property fabulous and the garden just divine. We loved our stay here and thoroughly recommend this holiday accommodation. Thanks for having us, Joanne!

A nice retreat in Falmouth Harbour
Joanne has worked hard to make the house, grounds and pool area very welcoming. This is the first Caribbean island that I visited that air conditioning was not needed to sleep at night. The house is close to the Falmouth Harbour area, which has plenty of restaurant options. There are two local grocery stores that have staples, but I recommend using one of the larger grocery stores on your way in from the airport. Darkwood Beach is the best on the island and an easy drive. Locals are very friendly. There is an ice cream place 5 minutes away.

Beautiful gardens, comfortable house, great pool, nice location, great host.
Joanne does a really nice job creating a great experience for visitors to Antigua. Her property is beautiful, and creates a very peaceful setting for a really relaxing vacation experience. She was also around to provide helpful tips for us on things to see and places to eat etc...
The house was very clean and comfortable. The garden is really amazing, with a lot of beautiful palms and flowing plants - attracting birds and coqui frogs that make soothing peeping sounds at night. The pool on the property was nice - partially shapes by the garden trees and with clean lovely water.
To rent this place, I would strongly recommend renting a car, as there is a lot to see in the southern part of the island, but some of the beaches and things to see are a mile or two away (or more). There is a small market store and a few restaurants within walking distance, but having a rental car opened up a lot more for us to see in the Falmouth/English Harbour area.
Overall, I think this may not be the place for some people who want the "all-inclusive resort" experience, but for us - this was a much better experience. It made us feel more like we could pretend that we lived on the island for a week - a delightful slice of paradise. We would happily go back and rent this place again. I felt that the price was very reasonable for what we got.

Joanne is lovely and her property is a beautiful oasis!
We had an amazing time! The house was perfect for us. My girlfriend and I brought our teenagers and it worked out great! With the two rooms at different sides of the house we had our own space, and with the large kitchen and main room we never felt crowded. The outside porch was my favourite, sitting couches tables and a cozy hammock. The tortoises in a fenced area were fun to feed your compost too. The pool was a real treat, very clean and always the right temperature to cool off in. We felt like we were in our own resort.
Joanne was amazing! She always made sure we knew where we were going and was always so helpful with information. Always a friendly smile and honestly feel i have a new beautiful friend in her. We will definitely be back. Thanks for an amazing trip Joanne! Kind regards Jenny

Pure Magic!
The only hesitation I might have about giving Joanne's transcendent cottage 5 stars is the thought of it being overrun by other, less worthy travelers than me. Joanne has built an elegant spacious wooden house and furnished it with great taste and care, on an island where fine furniture is likely hard to find. Then she built a garden and swimming pool around it that is absolute pure magic, stunning palms, bouganvillia etc. You can sit by the pool all day and be in the prettiest spot in Antigua. Restaurants, bakeries and shops all 5 minutes walk away. Finally, Joanne, is helpful, charming, quirky, wonderful.

Best holiday ever!
What an amazing place this is, the garden alone is one of the most beautiful I have ever been in. Bamboo Garden is so special, serene, private and wonderfully relaxing. The house is so comfortable and perfectly setup for 2 couples to share and still have their own space.
Antigua is beautiful and everyone was so friendly and helpful, this is also a perfect location in which to do your island touring then come home and hang out by the pool. We also love being in the Falmouth/English Harbour area, lots of good restaurants, hiking, beautiful beaches, snorkling & lots of nice people. This was our third visit and we will defineatly be back again. Thank you so much Joanne.

We visited Antigua in January 2012, and our time was made much more enjoyable staying at Joanne's property. The house had a very private feel and was tucked into carefully tended, beautiful tropical greenery. In the midst of the garden was a clean, carefully tended pool. Joanne herself was an excellent hostess, always available to provide information or help while also impeccably respectful of our privacy. Another great plus was the very good wifi service that is available throughout the property. This is a great place to stay for independent travelers like ourselves who prefer tranquil, quiet surroundings as a base to explore the region. I would definitely stay here again upon returning to Antigua, especially after having other less than satisfactory experiences elsewhere in the Caribbean.
Thanks again Joanne!!

We arrived for our first ever visit to Antigua and drove from the airport to the house using the perfect directions provided. The house was lovely, clean, and full of guides and maps for our stay. Joanne had even gone to the store and stocked the fridge with a few essentials upon our arrival. She also offered suggestions for grabbing a bite to eat in the area, and gave us some ideas for things to see and do during our stay (all of which we did and enjoyed). I always research a location ahead of time, but her "insider" information was very helpful. We loved the hammock and the pool on the property, and the convenience of having a market around the corner. I walked down to Bailey's several afternoons to pick up drinks or something for breakfast. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone looking for a rental in Antigua. The location is removed from the more commercial areas, but still convenient for exploring the island. They house is comfortable and makes for an easy, relaxing vacation. Thanks so much, Joanne!

I have stayed in the house twice already this year. I'm certain I will return. The first stay was with family and the second was with friends and it was wonderful both times. The house is lovely and spacious and very comfortable. It is very well-located near Falmouth Harbor. I would definitely recommend getting a car not because of the location but because it is just really nice to have a car to get all around the island (there are so many wonderful places to visit and it's fun to drive - just get a car). Joanne will recommend a car company for you, as well as a taxi driver, and will provide you with a mobile phone, recommendations and information on where to go, and delicious fresh fruits and vegetables from the market. She is a gracious host who makes you feel like you're at home. The pool here is lovely, especially for a nighttime swim. You're also very close to a grocery store, a liquor store and many restaurants so you should be all set. I would (and probably will) absolutely stay here again.

Our stay at this property was most enjoyable. I felt like I was at home there. Sitting on the porch and watching the birds at the feeder,or the turtles doing their tour of duty around the owner's yard, taking in the fantastic tropical garden all around was a wonderful way to start the day. Inside is also comfortable with a comfy sofa and chairs.
The owner lives on sight and works at a fresh food market and will bring home for you the most wonderful and fresh produce if you so desire to cook in. Another nice benefit if you do like to cook in and like a glass of wine or two, is that there is an amazing variety of world wide wines available on this island at very reasonable prices!
Now if you decide that you wish to go out for dinner or lunch there are many great places to nosh, both reasonable and higher end, all delicious. Watch out for the traditional rum punch as it is both yummy and deadly!
If you like to be active and are willing to drive in Antigua, there is no end to what is available. Walking from the bottom of the start to Shirley Heights is 1/2 hour up to a breathtaking view is one hike, and another is a guided hike through the rain forest up a mountain to the top, very special. Now, as a reward for choosing your healthier lifestyle pick a beach any of 365 of them to have a little down time. The owner is very knowledgeable about the beaches and well, pretty well everything to do and see on Antigua.

My husband and I stayed at the Bamboo House with another couple and enjoyed it very much. It felt like home the moment we walked in. Joanne was very helpful and made our stay & travels in Antigue everything we were looking for. The fresh fish from the local vendor and the produce from the farmers market Joanne runs were wonderful. We would recomend this lovely home to anyone. Thanks Joanne!

We stayed at Bamboo House from Nov 13-20,2011. As this was our first vacation in Antigua we were very pleased with our choice of accommodations. Bamboo apartment is spacious, tastefully decorated and has a great outdoor deck. We totally enjoyed having our meals on the deck and in the evening listening to the tree frogs. The pool is close to the house and perfect for a swim at anytime. Joanne, our ever gracious hostess (who treated us like family) provided us with all the information we needed to tour the island. It was nice being close to English Harbor, restaurants, grocery stores, liquor stores and the bank. The beaches are gorgeous with crystal clear water. One of our favorites was Pigeon Beach. It is not large, but there are nice big trees to keep you out of the sun if you wish. A 4 x 4 rental is a must as the roads are not great, but after a few days you get used to them. Once again, thank you Joanne. You made our vacation in Antigua memorable. We will be back.

Bamboo Cottage and Joanne just made our vacation an unforgettable one. The cottage is very comfortable, cozy, and well maintained. The beautiful garden that surrounds it just makes you feel in paradise. You can either relax in the porch sipping coffee, or in the hammock listening to the birds, or sitting at the pool while enjoying the beautiful nature. The cottage is very well located, close to English Harbour, Nelsons Dockyard, several beaches which are a must: Pigeon Beach, Halfmoon Bay, Rendezvous Bay (absolutely worth the trip!). You can either buy your groceries close to the cottage, or eat out in one of the nice places in English Harbour. You should definitely rent a car, even better if you get a 4x4. Driving is totally relaxing and the scenery is breath taking. Last but not least, Joanne is the perfect host. She will help you all the way from your trip planning to the last minute. She will make sure you enjoy your stay! She has great tips, great produce from the market, a great property, and a great smile that she always shares with you! Thanks Joanne, you really made our vacation a very special one.

My wife and I had the opportunity to stay at Bamboo House for two weeks recently and recommend that anyone considering an extended stay outside of the all inclusive resorts should look at this lovely property. Located on the south side of the island, Bamboo House has the amenities travelers come to expect in a vacation home including privacy, swimming pool, laundry and cleaning service. The "lush tropical garden" is exactly what our hostess, Joanne, has created for her guests. The bed was comfortable, the kitchen was complete, the outside grounds were well maintained and the entire atmosphere made the property feel like home. The listing photos cannot do justice to the property. My wife and I would be swimming while at the same time marveling at the beauty of the flora and fauna surrounding us.
Joanne, our hostess, was available when we needed questions answered but she was never intrusive. By our last evening we invited her to sit with us and it was like talking with a long time friend. Having worked in the hospitality industry for many years, Joanne goes out of her way to meet her clients' needs, make recommendations and provide expert insight to the island, its' people, its' culture and its' attractions.
Falmouth Harbour and English Harbour have much to offer with Nelson's Dockyard National Park, fine dining, great beaches, beach bars and shopping within two miles of the property. Most of the excursion tours were located in Jolly Harbour to the west of where the property is located or in the capital city of St. Johns. We rented a car at the airport when we flew in and Joanne met us there and we followed her to the Bamboo House. Looking back, we would recommend taking a taxi from the airport to Falmouth Harbour and renting a vehicle in Falmouth for exploring; and taking a taxi back to the airport when departing. We found driving to be challenging to say the least: narrow streets, potholes and few road signs.
We booked two excursions with Treasure Island-those were two of our best experiences. We took the ferry to Barbuda for a tour of the island, the frigate bird sanctuary, a lobster lunch and a 17 mile beach all to ourselves. If prone to motion sickness, take your pills!
Try Hamilton's, Tappas and Cloggy's for excellent dining in English Harbour. If headed to Jolly Harbour, stop at Turner Beach (and the beach bar).
Antigua and Barbuda was a trip to remember. If we have the opportunity to return, we will stay at the Bamboo House. Thanks, Joanne!

I have been looking forward to this vacation, during the Classic Antigua Regatta (Easter time) from long ago. This was a reunion of me and my two children that leave in London (I leave in Italy) and my uncle that was there already from a long time. So for me was extremely important that the house would have been cosy, nice, relaxing… Of course I was worried: long travel and then? I’m VRBO too, so in principle I trust the other VRBOs… In any case, from the very first email with Joanne I understood she was a special person, and I was sure that everything would have been as I was dreaming from many months. And indeed it was. The house is adorable, the garden magnificent. Everything has taste, love, and years of dedicated settlement. Joanne (who runs a farm for local genuine Antiguans food) is a wonderful guest, always available, always nice and ready to bring everything you need from the farm. Everything is perfect! Hot water, linen, Wi-Fi, calm, light, birds songs,..
We had taken both the house and the cottage: after a discussion between my two my sons it has been decided that the cottage would have been taken by the elder and her girlfriend. The cottage is superb it is like a hat in the jungle, but with all is needed. My child and her girl friend were very happy there. The main house has a big living room, with a well-furnished kitchen and two bedrooms with bathrooms. All around the house the veranda, the glorious garden with all possible kind of birds and the pool. The place is also quite close to Falmouth and English harbour where we used to go every day as my uncle participated to the regatta (actually his boat won the elegance award). Falmouth and English Harbour are the nicest places in Antigua, plenty of restaurants and café’ and so many beautiful sailing boats. A car is needed but we enjoyed having it so that we could go around and visit the whole island and its secret bays. I’m already looking forward to go back to Antigua at this very special house, full of charm and beauty.

My girlfriend and I stayed in both the house and the cottage for our one week trip and we adored the place. It is a gorgeous oasis of palm trees and exotic plants with a beautiful private swimming pool. Every morning and evening we would go swimming as if we were the only ones in a tropical forest. The house and cottage were way over my expectations, perfect for a romantic getaway, and I would easily picture also going there for a family getaway. Joanne is such a nice and helpful person, not intrusive, and she made everything possible to make our stay even better. Also, she knows the island perfectly and knows the best spots to go. The house is located just a 5 minute drive to English Harbor where you have great restaurants and good night life. Last but not least, we had time to go everywhere on the island but we definitely thought that Falmouth Harbor was the best place on the island to stay as it is close to all the most beautiful places of the island. We will definitely come back to Antigua in the near future and I can’t think of a better place to stay than at Joanne’s. Thank you so much for everything Joanne!
Take care,
Justin and Stef
