About this house rental

Need a quiet getaway in the heart of Old Town Fort Collins? Let the Choice City Bungalow and our garden oasis be your home away from home. Built in 1900, this charming 1 bedroom, 1 bath home with a newly updated kitchen tells the story of historic Fort Collins. Arrive at your private retreat through the screen door entrance, the gateway to a secret garden path. The house is situated on a quiet street, just a five-minute walk away to favorite Old Town shops, bars, restaurants, museums, popular performing arts venues, and our world-famous breweries. CSU is also located just a few blocks away. If you feel like reconnecting with nature, ride one of our bikes or take a relaxing stroll to City Park or the Poudre River. If you want to get a bit further around town, the MAX bus stop and several other city bus lines are just around the corner. The Canino family, true Fort Collins locals and the owners of the oldest Italian restaurant in Fort Collins, Canino’s Italian Restaurant, purchased this quaint house in 1978. Karen Canino, your host, is a recycle artist and former grade-school art teacher. Artist-Explorer Karen runs her recycled art shop and gallery Screen Door Studios Gallery established in 2008 from the front part of the property. Open most Saturdays. The business will not interfere with your stay in any way. You might find yourself wanting to purchase your hand made Fort Collins souvenirs right on site. With great attention to detail, Karen lovingly and expertly curated the living space to reflect her travels around the world, eclectic style, love of art and knack for creating custom-made items out of found and recycled objects. Every piece in this home and garden has a story to tell and invites you to take a trip around the world. Bright colors show off molas created by the Kuna Indians of Panama, Oriental rugs provide luxurious softness, and original art turns this home into a miniature gallery. Dine seated at the vintage bench or al fresco at the table under the pergola in the whimsical backyard. Hooked? Here are a few more details to help make your decision: • The full kitchen was updated in 2018. We provide all kitchen essentials including a dishwasher. • Locally sourced soap and other basic toiletries. • Full washer and dryer with essential cleaning products available. • Private driveway for you to park in. • Two bikes are available for your use! • The brass double bed sleeps two extremely comfortably (just read the reviews). We can also provide a twin size rollaway for an extra guest. • Summers can get hot in Fort Collins. To cool this house down sustainably, we invested in an attic fan – the most natural fit for the bungalow. We will teach you how to use it so you can enjoy a cool and relaxing stay. • WiFi and Netflix available. • This unconventional home is best suited for adults and children over 8 years old. • Don’t forget, stop by the Screen Door Studio to bring home a one-of-a-kind handmade Fort Collins souvenir! Karen is such a lovely host. Very friendly and helpful. The bungalow is great with everything you need for a special stay. Super location. Very quiet but only two blocks from a wonderful breakfast place and walking distance to downtown. Don’t miss the artwork and colour around the place which helps make it so special.

This bungalow was the very best in terms of its central location, its many amenities, its classy, unique decor done by its artist-owner, and mainly its owner herself! Karen was THE PERFECT hostess from check-in to check-out and beyond! She met us at the door when we arrived and stayed in touch throughout our stay to make sure absolutely every tiny thing was taken care of. She opened herself and her whole family as the dearest of friends would, made amazing local recommendations, personally arranged an unscheduled trash-pickup, and stepped up at the last minute to literally save us in a weather emergency. She gave me her own cell number and I will keep it forever. I’ve already tried to reschedule a future visit, and was saddened (but not in the least bit surprised) that her charming little bungalow is very booked!

We enjoyed our stay very much! It is close to campus and Old Town. It was the perfect little place for a fun weekend of food and football!

The property description gives a good sense of the property: it is small and wouldn't take more than 2 people, it is charming and creatively decorated with artsy and vintage pieces, the yard is a bit unkempt but has a lovely sitting area for outdoor dining. The cottage is within 5 minutes walk of Lucille's (nice breakfast / lunch place) and 15 minutes walk of either Old Town with all the restaurants and shops, or CSU. We enjoyed it and would happily stay again.

I expected my stay at Karen's cottage to be wonderful, and I was not disappointed. From the fresh flowers to the spotless kitchen, everything was absolutely A+. Being surrounded by art and funky decorative items made the experience a joy. I was able to cook a full meal in the kitchen and enjoy it outside with guests under the arbor. If you want a relaxing and lovely getaway in Fort Collins, in a location that is easily walkable from campus or Old Town, this is a great choice.

The bungalow is gorgeous. Karen met us on arrival, showed us around and gave us a few suggestions of things to do around Fort Collins. We loved the character of the bungalow and it was well furnished for our stay. The bed was comfy, we both slept great every night. We walked to old town several times admiring the neighborhood gardens. We’re looking forward to coming back.
