Bissau Royal Hotel

The main hall features charming colonial decor. Bedrooms are genuinely cosy, creating an overall impression of good taste and deliberate style. The staff are very friendly and professional, which makes it a pleasure to stay.

Unfortunately, the gym is of poor quality. Breakfast could be better, and the swimming pool had a lot of chlorine.

The standard of the hotel was five star, and that's by European standards not African! The pool on the roof terrace was lovely with great views of the city and docks. All the staff were friendly and welcoming

The location

The hallways smelled unpleasant and had no air conditioning, which already made the experience uncomfortable from the start. The pool is tiny and located on the rooftop, with no greenery, no atmosphere and no decor whatsoever. It also isn’t private, as any guest can use the space, so we ended up not using it at all. Inside the room, things did not improve. The air conditioning in the bedroom was extremely noisy and the mini-fridge sounded like a bloody truck running all night. Sleeping peacefully became almost impossible. The safe was locked and unusable, and there were no instructions explaining how to open it. On top of that, it is ridiculously small. You cannot even fit a notebook/laptop inside it, which completely defeats the purpose of having a safe in the room in the first place. The bathroom, at least in the room we stayed in, was incredibly small and poorly designed. It was difficult to move around inside and felt cramped to the point that it was easier to leave the door open. It simply wasn’t practical. To make matters worse, one of the days we had no hot water and had to shower with freezing cold water. Even if it’s Africa, I do not expect to take ice-cold showers in a hotel marketed as a five-star property. This is simply not five-star standard. We were also asked to pay extra for an airport transfer, which I declined and made my own transfer arrangements. And the cherry on top: at 1:40 am, we were woken up by a member of staff who called our room simply to ask me how I was. This is completely unacceptable and something I have never experienced at any hotel before. Another detail that was honestly surprising was the bedding setup. We stayed in a twin room and were given only one pillow per bed. I have stayed in many hotels and I have genuinely never seen a supposed five-star hotel provide only one pillow per guest as a standard setup. What is disappointing is that I already knew this hotel.
