Campanile Rennes Centre - Gare

It's a little gem. The hotel is just down the central street visible from the train station's north exit, and an easy walk even if laden down with luggage. Location is great; despite the central location, it's quiet (I heard seagulls more often than people), and the plaza outside is lined with sidewalk restaurants and a souvenir shop on the corner selling Brittany sweets and things. I was shown to an extremely comfortable, spacious, and clean room, with a desk and ample luggage storage space. It even had a balcony, the only one in any room I booked on this trip through France. The staff are friendly, cheerful and polite at all hours, and most are multilingual. They are also knowledgeable about the area, and able to direct me to the post office, laundromat, hair salon, and any sort of restaurant I asked about. There are nice little touches everywhere, like a lobby sitting area with magazines and a rack of information about local events and coolers of water with citrus fruit always available at the front desk. The buffet breakfast in particular is top-notch and packed with delicious regional foods from across Brittany, most with interesting information about them supplied on little cards. It was well worth the 15 euros. I also appreciate the hotel's commitment to ecological awareness, with recycling bins provided for both packaging and food waste. I doubled the length of my planned stay after the first night, and resolved to check out other Campanile chain locations while traveling Brittany. I hope the Rennes one never changes a thing, because for a budget hotel it's virtually perfect. Merci!

The double bed was not a real double, but two single mattresses with one pad and sheets over them - the gap between them could be felt when lying down. Not a huge issue, but makes sleeping in the center of the bed less comfortable vs. sleeping on either side. Housekeeping did not make up my room on the one day I requested it; I asked at the desk when I left in the morning, but found it hadn't been done after returning well into the evening. The helpful front desk clerk offered an apology and fresh towels immediately, however, so I didn't mind too much. Be aware that the door hangers are confusing - one side says do not disturb but the other indicated that you do NOT need housekeeping that day. Make sure there's no hanger on the door when you go out if you want housekeeping to visit.
