Gumi Ayu EcoStay

The property is really nice and if you want to get down some stairs there is a waterfall there. The staff was amazing and very supportive with everything we needed. It’s a bit remote, but this is normal for Munduk and the staff is always happy to help you book a driver or activity.

Room: The room was beautiful, large, and very private. We especially loved the open air bathroom and the balcony net; the hotel provided blankets for relaxing in the net, and bubble bath and robes, which was thoughtful. The view down into the jungle valley was lovely and the room had all the conveniences we wanted like a water cooler, fridge, kettle, bug net etc. The bed was comfortable as well. Location: The location will be love-hate; it's high up in the mountains, a mile or so from a small remote town. The rooms themselves are down quite a long set of stairs, so you couldn't stay there if you aren't reasonably fit, and if you don't have a driver or a scooter you aren't going anywhere. However, it is exceptionally beautiful, very quiet, and nice and cool if you aren't used to the heat. It's well placed for visiting waterfalls, and for visiting the north of the island (Lovina / Kintamani etc). Staff: The staff were absolutely fabulous. They were friendly, attentive, personable, and couldn't do enough for you. We stayed in eight hotels during our 4 weeks in Bali, including some high end resorts, and the staff at Gumi Ayu stood out as the best. The poor lady at the front desk even got someone to go and buy my partner some protein powder (thank you, and sorry for making you do that). Restaurant: The food at the hotel was excellent and had huge portions - we liked it so much that we ate there every day which is unusual for us. The view from the restaurant was amazing, overlooking the jungle view in the mountains with the clouds and mist rolling in. Activities: The hotel offers a lot of activities. We did the Lovina Dolphin tour, had a great massage at the onsite spa, and did a wonderful Balinese Cooking Class with head chef Komang Adi, which was a real highlight. You can also easily access the Five Waterfalls trek from the hotel.

The driver that the hotel hired for our Dolphin Watching tour was very unsafe and we actually hired a different driver to bring us back because we were not comfortable getting in the car with him again. The electricity wiring situation in the room was... interesting. Lights would flicker sometimes and there were a few overloaded plug sockets. But we had no outages, and I think it's more that the Balinese safety standards are less stringent than the UK.

Terrific stay in Munduk. Staff were amazing & we loved the location. Food was great - fresh & interesting. Lots of steps, ask for a room near the restaurant if that’s a concern. Hire a driver & visit some local waterfalls, honey farm etc.
